Bro, Arthas, even the control of Nerzhul, willingly let himself be used as a weapon of destruction. He killed his father, destroyed his kingdom, doomed most of the population to the curse of undeath, used the ash urn of his father as a way to revive Kel'Thuzad, killed his teacher, and then wounded/stop a part of his soul. Even after that, he kept seeking more destruction. Ik that Arthas' issue is very complex but his lack of will to resist taking the easy way out to save his people led him down a path where Uther's decision is justified.

Thought they retconned at first but you can see one part of his soul going into the blade and another going to Shadowlands. We meet the soul fragment in the blade in Icecrown during WotLK and here we see the other part. Looks like something similar to Varian's soulsplit happened here where the two fragments take on different personalities as the fragment within the blade ended up forgiving Arthas and the part that went to Bastion was hellbent on revenge. That's why he couldn't ascend. The part of him that should've made it possible was missing.

Exactly what I was thinking. To add on this basis, I believe Ner'zhul created Death Knights from Paladins exactly of this reason - because some Paladins like Uther could not be completely consumed by the Lich King at all due to Light. Probably the Eredar that made Ner'zhul into Lich King knew this too. So unable to convert Paladins into his own he had to convert them into creatures of Vengeance, Death Knights.

@@Itachixg Just because he calls it justice, doesn't mean it is justice. He made it personal, and you can't judge anything right when you make it personal - That's also the point with the Bastion and their teachings from what we know so far. This broken Uther and his paragon buddy are taking "justice" into their own hands, and dealing out judgement as they see fit from their personal point of view. Uther calls it "justice", but that's simply to excuse and justify his lust for vengeance. It's a very typical and human thing to do. You also see Uther struggling with the choice right before he drops him, but the paragon is seething with hate and urges him to throw Arthas into the Maw. She's kind of the Devil on his shoulder. The part of Uther struggling with condemning Arthas was basically the part that won out in the Uther trapped in Frostmourne; the part that chose to forgive and forget. Judgement was not for him to decide. The Uther in Frostmourne stayed true to the way of a Paladin of the Light, whilst the Uther in Bastion got screwed by his own Paragon and led on a path of vengeance.

Arthas was not a villain. He was a hero of the Alliance, who unfortunately fell to the plans of the Lich King. Mal'ganis forced his hand in Stratholme. What options would you have taken? The villagers had already eaten the infected grain and they were sure to turn into zombies. There were only two options. Let them turn into undead, fight them and lose your men? Or put the civilians to the sword, granting them a quick and swift death? After that, others had lost hope on him. Jaina Proudmoore, Uther the Lightbringer and the knights of the silver hand. Unjustly so even, they did not know what Arthas Menethil knew, what the Scourge could do to his people. All their suggestions were that there had to be another way, but in fact they could not come up with a plan. They did not understand the pain and sorrow Arthas had to go through with the only plan they had in hand during that one crucial moment. There was no moment of joy, when you kill your own people that you devote yourself to protect as a paladin of the holy light. There was no cure for the plague, there was no 2nd plans. Just that 1 plan, which worked, but was deemed horrible. After Stratholme Arthas travelled to Northrend, with his trustworthy captain and men who had been with Arthas the whole journey, whom had seen what the Scourge could do, they understood very well what they were doing in Northrend. To hunt down Mal'ganis, and the Scourge. Upon arrival to the frozen wastelands, he met up with Muradin Bronzebeard. He rescued Muradin and his men, who then joined Arthas' quest for the hunt of Mal'ganis. They fought bravely in Northrend, even so that they were running out of time and resources. King Terenas had ordered Arthas to return home, after being persuaded by Uther the Lightbringer. Again, no support for Arthas. Instead, they had to come up with the gruesome plan, to hire mercenaries, to burn down their own ships. THE SHIPS! Not the men, but the SHIPS! Alas, the mercenaries were blamed and killed. Arthas did not sacrifice his own men, but the ships and the mercenaries. Arthas did not kill his own people, some of them were even left behind, but not killed. The rest pushed forward, for they were closing in the hunt for Mal'ganis. Should there have been no need to call the ships back, the mercenaries and the ships could have been spared, but alas there were no options. There was no guarantee of a plan, there was no guarantee that the Scourge wouldn't strike at Lordaeron after the hunt for Mal'ganis would have been cancelled. If the King himself would have showed up, it might have changed the situation, since then the king himself would have seen what Arthas had seen, but that was not the case. Instead Uther, who had no plan for the Scourge, had convinced the king that Arthas should return. Instead of urging the king to send backup or help, it is understandable to see Arthas being felt betrayed. Then the time finally came, Arthas met up with Mal'ganis and his huge undead forces. But alas, Arthas, who had no support from his one and only father, who had no support from his mentor, who had no support from his beloved, had to only rely on his men and their new friends the dwarves, it still was not enough. Even with the mighty Muradin Bronzebeard by his side, they stood no chance. They were about to be all killed by the Scourge. It was that time, when Muradin remembered of a sword that might save them. And again, seeing it as their only hope, their only plan, they went seeking for the sword. They left their forces to defend their base, and went together to look for the sword. In the cave, there it was, the runeblade Frostmourne. Upon closer look, Muradin read the warnings and beckoned Arthas to forget about the sword. Sadly, Arthas yet again with no options. Took the sword. Else they would have all died and turned into undead. There was no other way, same situation as in Stratholme. So down the rabbit hole they went. Arthas took Frostmourne as his own and upon taking it, Muradin was knocked down by the power of the sword. Again Arthas was not the one who wanted to hurt his friend. He also did not kill his friend, he did leave him behind, for he had to rescue his men and at that point the corruption of the sword started to take a hold of Arthas. Upon returning to the camp, the captain and his men clearly noticed a change in him, as well as questioned Muradin's whereabouts. But none of it mattered, they were under constant attack of the Scourge, it was that time or never, to finish what they started and end Mal'ganis. And end Mal'ganis they did. They had accomplished what they had came for., at a heavy cost yes. But a deed that no one else could have accomplished. For that, he is a true hero of Alliance, he suffered much, but he did not falter. Was he a villain? In my eyes no. Would a villain really go that far for his people? Would a villain put his own life at stake and also fight alongside his men till the very reaches of the frozen ends of the world? Was he a brilliant hero? No. He was a paladin we all admired him for. It was a fool's errand to go to Northrend. A death wish. But again, there was no other choice at that time. He had no allies left. Should he have had the full might of the Alliance with him, they would have been able to destroy the Scourge and Mal'ganis while the Scourge was still in an early stage of gathering forces. Regardless, after the deed was done, he returned to his home in Lordaeron. The mission was completed, Mal'ganis was put to the blade. The Scourge was thought to be defeated and King Terenas was happy to see his son return from the frozen wastes as any father would see their son return from war. Sadly, people who enter wars, don't return the same. More so, the corruption of Frostmourne had already taken over Arthas. It was clear, it was clear to everyone, that this was not the same man who once fought for his people. And the outcome was gruesome. From that point it was downhill. All the way up to Icecrown and it's end. But along it's way, we saw the memento to Jaina that Arthas had. He cared for her. We saw the memento he had for his father. He cared for him. We saw him going to the extremes of separating his heart from his body. We saw him trying to wrestle for the control of his mind, he was not alone, he was under corruption of a dark force. We saw him descend into madness, with no help to be found. He had even resurrected his own horse for he had nothing else. He was alone. Surrounded by the cold tall saronite metal fortress. Surrounded by his undead army. Surrounded by the dark whispers. And then he was surrounded by us. All that was left was hate and anger towards Arthas. Revenge was what drove people to Northrend, to put an end to the now-sitting Lich King, but at the same time forgetting or not knowing that Arthas had been a victim, still we treated him the same as the Lich King. It was merely a puppet show. I always hoped he could have been saved. I always saw that there was no villain, just a hero who had fallen victim and was unable to help himself. All we did was put him to the sword. In a way, we did help him in the end. By freeing him from the corruption. But I always felt like what we did, was no different from what Arthas did originally. We had but 1 choice just like Arthas, and while it seemed to solve the problem, it didn't feel right to me. To me it was a failure. We had secured Northrend, but we failed to see what was behind it. Should we have been with him? Absolutely, we all did the WotLK expansion, why wouldn't we have fought in the frontlines with Arthas himself and his men in the first place? Instead we sadly joined the party when it was already too late and we had lost Arthas to the Lich King. As Shadowlands aproaches.... I am re-doing WotLK. And I still hope, we could have saved Arthas. And I still hope, it isn't too late.

The sad part is that he was freed by death only to get his freedom stolen, Uther bypassed the Arbiter and sent him back to the very person that mindfucked him, the Jailer, to be tortured for anima for eternity. If he had been sent to the Arbiter he wouldnt end up in the Maw, heck he probably was fit for Bastion as he lived a selfless life and would most likely want to forget, this is supported by the fact that his soul in the Maw had the form of a child.

@elviade Arthus was corrupted, the moment he took Frostmourne, he was no longer himself. His soul was stolen, that was the curse of wielding it, he was entirely ignorant and stubborn to realize. He thought he could bear any curse to save his people, but the curse would cause him to kill them. Also the dreadlords are masters of psychological manipulation and corruption. It was them who even twisted the mind of the Titan Sargeras after countless ages of him destroying demons following his task as a Titans, his encounter with the dreadlords eventually twisted his psyche making him the mad titan.

@elviade Trust me, if Arthas wanted to be evil, he had many chances to do it, but in the end he didn't do it. After he claimed Frostmourne it's a whole other story. There was no evil intentions, Jaina Proudmoore was aware of the grain infection as well as Uther The Lightbringer, but they were unable to do anything about it. In the end, at the undead campaign they were still unable to do anything about it and it wasn't until WotLK that there was any success against the Scourge, but at that point it was many years too late. They had over 5 years to do something about it, but they never managed to do anything. ´ And even now in Shadowlands we are still fighting the undead.

In a sense, Uther's motivation to punish Arthas is the same mindset that drove Arthas to Northrend in the first place (in pursuit of justice). So iconic. 10 years of a storyline coming to and end and they could not have used a better piece. It just communicates everything it should. Sorrow, regret, resolution, and how far we've come. This was one of the most moving lore-related thing Blizzard has released in a long time, no surprise it's a WotLK callback.
