I wish they would model navies properly. Seems more than a little strange to introduce ocean based DLC for a game like this but to still abstract sea-borne combat to such an extent.

Said it before, saying it again: Oceania is a weird hyper-abstracted fudge to avoid allowing factions to build ships. Why? Probably for reasons we're already aware of:- - nearly every game with a naval element struggles with an AI that doesn't make a complete mess of it, and Vic is but one man. - the game already struggles with representing the complex supply system for the AI to be able to handle effectively (so much so that the AI really isn't playing the same game as the player in terms of supply; it builds roads for free over any terrain; its supply does not degrade over distance; nor is it limited in terms of throughput - which is why the AI doesn't build rail, it doesn't need it) thus adding in supply mechanics for overseas operations and beachheads is likely too difficult. Net result is bizarre, ephemeral sea-based super-powers that were seemingly untouched by the collapse and don't have to 'Mad Max' their way back up like the land factions do; have no base or port; no physical presence in the world whatsoever; and frequently magic up massive pirate raiders from seemingly nowhere at all. This is all abstracted to such an extent that you would lose no finesse if this were just a text only interface.

IMO this is a guaranteed commercial failure, if you can't do water properly, just don't do it. It's pretty obvious that most people wanted navies.

@@isitanos I don't know about 'commercial failure' but it's a pretty weird way to gauge interest in an actual naval system by releasing an update about the seas that doesn't include navies (which is apparently one reason why the dev released this in the way that it is). It's all rather peculiar thinking. Maybe this is symptomatic of being a one-man-band: there's no-one around to correct your course a little bit.

Its really difficult to model Navy. Hearts of Iron 4 has a pretty good approximation but there's still strange issues-its an abstraction of how it is like everything else. Naval combat is so different than land and oceans are vast which creates these situations were massive fleets will "miss" eachother. Really, any direction you go will end up with strange results... The game is on hexes too so its just a mess. I dont know how VIc deals with it.
