Shad Fishing (Landed a Giant) at Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River! We Caught 40 Fish in 2 Hours!

Ойын-сауық

We hit Bonneville Dam at Bradford Island for some early season Shad and surely hit them hard! We caught fish after fish for about 2 hours and ended up with around 40 in total. Kailey found a giant, which is now her personal best and a target for us to beat this season and beyond. What makes this fish the most impressive is that it will be a few weeks before the females start running (besides a few here and there), so this was a caught amongst thousands of males. Stick around to the end of the video to see the length and weight of the big Shad.
We hope you enjoy this one as much as we do!
Thanks for watching!
Stay tuned for more Shad content as well as Trout, Bass, Salmon and Crab in the near future!

Nice! What day was this on? Trying to see how fish counts relate to the catches, will be my first year shad fishing.

This was last Saturday 5/25. We are newer to shad fishing too and it isn’t overly complicated. Definitely switch up retrievals until you find a pattern and then stick to it! Thanks for watching, we will have more shad content as the season goes on 🤙

I forgot the name but there is a website the post the runs so you can see when it gets good. Last year I fished close to the dam and caught 86 of them. I think I was fishing either a 1/2 or 3/8 weight and I would let it sit for 7-10 sec before a reeled it in slow

@@rickyyym Yes, we use the Fish Passage Center to find the counts and keep a close eye. Last year we went when the run was over 100k which was wild. I (Danny) actually just got back from Shad fishing today and still haven't got a count yet but I'm guessing I caught around 100. Pretty fun and pretty dang easy! Amazing crab bait for us for the whole year. 🤙

@@rickyyym We usually run 1/2 oz to 1 oz and do exactly that. We've let it sink until we feel like we're in the strike zone and then reel it slow. We find some days they are biting deeper down and others we catch with a quicker top water retrieve. But more often than not it's been the slow play like you said.

Detroit Lake, Trillium Lake, Devils Lake in Lincoln City. There are lots of good places further East like Crane Prairie, Pine Hollow, Paulina, Prineville and more. All should produce fish. We're most familiar with Detroit and Devils, and then Trillium. So many great options though from the coast to the mountains, so take your pick and enjoy!

I don't like o eat this fish either, what's the limit per person? Isn't Bonneville quite a drive?

  • @northwestweekenders

No limit. Bonneville from Salem/Keizer is about 80-90 minute drive. I make it from my place in about 1 hour and 15 mins without traffic. Really not a bad drive!
