"In 1989, When Paddy Monaghan, of Christians concerned for Ireland, told a gay panel, Kieran Rose, it was "not normal for a man to be preoccupied with another man's back passage", Byrn shot back a question: "What about men who are besotted with women's front passages?" The ensuing laughter from the studio audience hinted at the fact that Mr Monaghan had lost the room and the argument."

Can't believe his last show will be 20 years next year in 2019. I was 17 when this show aired.

Gay was the best, brilliant tv and radio presenter, intelligent, sensitive and kind. Sadly missed Gay, thank you for all those years.

In such a conservative time, this was so progressive. The late late show was a great forum where people with very different ideas came face to face and actually had a chance to hear the other side of the story. Last but not least, the hinges and the swing of the door is one of funniest things I've ever heard. 🚜🇺🇸
