1993: "The most talked-about woman in Ireland today"

Annie Murphy was the American woman who shook Catholic Ireland in the early 1990s by exposing Bishop Eamon Casey as the father of her son. Here she is interviewed on the Late Late Show with Gay Byrne. I've seen the interview uploaded in part elsewhere, but this is it in full.

I really hope we have come a long way since then. The way he allowed those people to speak to her for so long was just terrible.

💯 agree. I remember having a huge row with my mother at the time. She was of an era when the clergy were idolised and subservience was expected from people. My own mother's words I can still hear today: " She tempted him into breaking his vows". Such was the brainwashing of the Catholic Church. My mother was born in 1930s. I'm glad I'm Irish and born in 50s. At least we have the opportunity to tell the Church to fu(k off. Bunch of paedophiliac hypocrites. Gay Byrne apologised years later apparently. Even he had to acknowledge what a wanker he'd been and how shitty his behaviour was to Annie.

As for the the women in the audience attack her and as for Gay he was less than professional and very rude to her, there’s no words to describe their behaviour. She was stronger than any of them and I’m sure has no regrets and has had and given much love to her son Peter. I am full of admiration for you Annie Murphy. Live your best live💖

Gay apologised, rightly, to Annie after this interview. He admitted that he had lost his professional objectivity during their discussion. She brushed off his apology. Annie told Gay that his brusque manner was mild compared to her treatment by the USA media. Annie told Gay that his antagonistic attitude towards her was indicative of the contemporary Irish people's view of her. Although a scandal at the time, Annie and Eamon's affair, was mild compared to the later revelations of clerical sexual abuse. These horrendous crimes were compounded by the Catholic Church and Irish state's failure to acknowledge and address the harm done.

Annie Murphy took the heat of the first angry pangs of denial for a nation that needed to admit what huge problems it had been cultivating for so long. Eamonn Casey was a man who succumbed to his emotional feelings in the moment and expressed them in a normal sexual fashion. He had a cosmic connection to Annie Murphy and she to him, the result was their son Peter, who now lives his life on his own cosmic level having inherited good human qualities from both his mother and father. Hopefully Ireland has become more enlightened since this archaic interview!

Sunday Independent newspaper put a picture of the womens bones put into milkchurns to make way for the sale. The women were given dirty births so they would die and so leave the babies to be adopted by well to do families like the Byrnes. Her book relates the infection she had after the birth and the lady who took her in prior to the birth. She had become close to her and came to visit her after the birth. On the two visits she called an Ambulance as she was running a high temperature.

I’m glad my parents had gone before the abuse scandals broke, stating with Casey. Lifelong catholics, they trusted the church implicitly and stayed true to their faith till death. It would have broken their hearts to learn of the crimes and cover ups . A tragedy for all who trusted and for all the many decent priests who have been tarnished by association. Never again will the church wield such power over people.

What a tragedy that the name of Jesus is tarnished by people who claim to represent him. "Depart from me ye that work iniquity, I never knew you."

Why not just do a DNA test ? That would have proved that the Bishop was the father ? Instead of going on about coffee birthmarks and hamdsome men showing up the bedside. That would have amswered Pink Ladys question.
