Justin. It's wasn't really "left off" the LP per see - what happened was that, as you note, Virgin were keen to get the record into the shops as early as possible so an 11 song version (which, I believe was pressed in France) arrived in the UK and was immediately distributed - there are only supposedly about 50,000 copies of that 11 song version and many of those included a hastily-added one-sided single containing Submission. But the song was always intended to be part of the LP (its on the back cover) and, every copy of Never Mind The Bollocks pressed since late 1977 has included it. So yes, technically, it wasn't on the "original" LP, but only for a matter of a couple of months. As to why they didn't put it out as a single, probably because the LP already contained four singles and they got quite a bit of grief from the music press at the time for "short changing" fans who's bought all four singles (three of which had been top ten hits in the UK) previously. There was also, perhaps, a feeling that it was somewhat atypical in that it was slower than almost all of their material. But it was, always, a popular song with both the band and fans alike and a concert favourite.
This and "Pretty Vacant" are my personal favorites. Was always amused that Johnny turned a song he was instructed to write about kinky domination-submission into a song about submarines, and yeah, that choking cough at the end always makes me smile.
One of my favorites on the LP! A bit overlooked, but i like the change of pace, and them goofing around. Never knew, it was on the American release.. no problem. Great reaction, JP.
The guitar part was "borrowed" from the Kinks' song "All Day and All of the Night". As you said, one of their catchiest songs.
Sounds like could be a Kinks song, maybe mixture of All Day and All of the Night and The Hard Way

Yeah, and also The Doors' "Hello, I Love You".

@@SpaceCattttt Story goes that they had the Doors in mind - it was one of the few bands that they all liked (even Glen)
Great reaction! Malcolm McLaren wanted Johnny to write a song about submission. This is not exactly what Malcolm had in mind. The song was included in the U.S. NMTB (pink) release, and had the song title on a sticker applied to the back of the album cover.

JP wouldn't have known this, but this is considered the weakest studio version of the song. Most fans prefer either the July 1976 "psychedelic" version, or the 1977 outtake version with harsher vocals and Sid on bass

@trashandcheese3636 I agree. I'm familiar with, and like the 1976 psychedelic version much better, followed by the 1977 outtake.

@@trashandcheese3636sid on bass 🤢🤮 Glen for this stinky old punkrocker everyday
Favourite song on the album for me
So I didn't realise until now that it's a play on words - "Sub-mission". And I bought the LP in 1977... 😂

Yeah, Malcolm wanted them to write a Submission song, to sell more bondage pants etc, so they wrote this to take the piss :D
To me it's one of the first post-punk songs, stylistically.
The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle album contains a few songs worth checking out as well.
One of my favourite Pistols tracks along with New York. Great Album bought it first time around.
Superb song. John is on fire.
Another great nautical themed song from this band is Friggin' in the Riggin'.

@@Owlstretchingtime78 Yes, juvenile and funny!
Always loved this song. It was on my album. It's quite different than the other songs on the album.
Nice song. I can't understand why it was left off the original album? Not unless it was already too long (a punk album too long??). The riff is also VERY reminiscent of the Doors' "Hello, I Love You".
Bought this album on early release and submission came as a one-sided single. Still got them
It was on the original Canadian release when I bought it back then. Must have just been omited on early UK release.
There's at least 8 top quality singles that they could have taken from this album and the B sides that didn't make the album are pretty good too - do check out if you get the chance. i wouldn't bother with the follow-up album 'the Great Rock & Roll Swindle' though some tracks are worth cherry picking - 'Belsen was a Gas' is pretty good though entirely tasteless lyric-wise.
Submissions greatness is in it's genesis.
JustJp, you've hit The Stooges?
You’re going to need some live Sex Pistols. There is a live cover of Stepping Stone, originally done by The Monkees.
Yes!!!!
I think submission was given away with the album as a one sided 7" on initial copies.
They sold lots of albums top hundred albums they didn’t show it was after the first release they are a diamond 💎 album
Obviously Metheny influenced… Hey, what has 8 arms and stabs his GF? A: Squid Vicious
A great song by a band they said could not sing or play, apart from Sid Vicious the other 3 were damn good, my favourite pistols song is Pretty Vacant, the Clash is my favourite band but the pistols are up there in bands I like
Sleaford Mods looped that riff in the track "Trixie." You've never heard anything like it. Unless you have.

The best track on the album. It would have been heresy to end it with EMI.

Ive said it before.....this is real punk ROCK. The Pistols were a great ROCK band.......all the post pistol new wave rubbish that followed was just that... rubbish. The tone on Steve Jones guitar work is phenomenal ....

I disagree 💯 Ive been a part of the Aotearoa New Zealand punk scene since 1984 still a part of it and you need to check out the underground scene at party's halls backyards PUNKROCK IS STILL BURNING BRIGHT IT'S ANGRY IN YA FACE GOING FOR THE THROAT. You won't hear it on the radio tv or whatever your poison is you have to go find it. PUNKS NOT DEAD (just a bit smelly)

@heathcornbeef we're all entitled to an opinion and I totally respect your view.....I'm glad there's still a punk scene on the other side of the world to me!!! But honestly punk died here the moment the Pistols called it a day. Then we had 5 or 6 years of radio friendly pap masquerading under the name punk....a few examples...Boomtown Rats,...Blondie, X-ray Secs...absolute 💩............anyway..anger isn't good for ya😊

@@markferrett700 kia ora hello brother I'm not angry about your opinion I'm just saying punkrock evolution continues its not just music it's a moral grounding in doing the right thing for people and our planet i follow the teachings of the prophet JOE STRUMMER 👍
I think the song was deleted from the album because it was too poppy!
Any artist who shocks for the sake of it is a fraud.
