    3 seconds into this one and I’m already laughing. Most fun sewing videos. I love this video, simple correction and I see how you don’t waste time cutting all the pieces exactly, you use your time wisely and those are the details that I enjoy in your videos, no fuzz.

    Match your hips and take it from there, Cindy - that’s my mantra. I used to fiddle around with rise, and could probably stand to shorten it but the pants fit fine. They just come up a bit high! I don’t wear anything tucked in, so it’s not a problem. Conquer the pants, I’m rooting for you!😄👍

    Hi Viv! Your car dress really is cute. I remember seeing you haul the fabric, and then, I think🤔 , show us the make?? Anyway, cute! When I taught kindergarten, that would have been perfect for our transportation unit😀. One of my favorite photos is of my hand holding mom’s hand before she died. Our hands were so much alike. Mom took very good care of her skin. When she died at 81, she had very few wrinkles, and natural brown hair with just a few hints of grey. She taught me to sew...as well as sewing class in school. I cut my notches inward. I hate to layout patterns because I measure, follow the suggested layout design, watch that every grain line is straight....by that time I am too tired to sew. But.....watching you....heck...I am going to do it the Liv way! I love learning from you. And....when you meant your head to pop in, I laughed aloud. You should be on tv!❤️❤️

    How sweet about your mom, Cindi. I lost my mom when she was 82. Her hands were a map of veins but what wonderful things she created with them!💕I think you can relax on following layouts - I find they’re often inefficient, but I always give them a glance. As far as grain lines, I should explain more in a future video, but I am not fanatical about them. I like straight, but not strict. (If that makes sense.) My clothes hang fine and last long. Good enough for me!

    You have no idea how happy you made me. You use scissors!!! You cut your notches outward!!! I’m not the only person in the world who enjoys sewing old school! I have several large cutting mats and 2 different size rotary cutters, but I still prefer using scissors when cutting out garments. For home dec, quilting, or craft projects with a lot of rectangular pieces I prefer the rotary cutters, but I really like using scissors for garment cutting. And I was sure there wasn’t another soul living who still cut notches outward. Seeing you do it made me really happy. Thank you! And I want to thank you for showing how you alter your pants. Every time someone in the sewing community shares their altering technique, it makes it less scary for a new seamstress and empowers them to jump in and try!!! But what really will encourage others to sew is to see what an amazing fit you got on your pants!! They really came out beautifully. I’m so happy to see your channel growing. Honestly, I would much rather watch my sewing channels than anything offered on TV. I suspect as more people disengage from traditional TV and tune into channels like yours, the happier they will be. PS. Colin has good taste; those scissors are gorgeous!

    Oh Nadine, thank you so much!! You are brilliant. You are generous. And I am lucky to be the receiver of your words.💕Heck yes to scissors and pins! I so admire people who can zip around with a rotary cutter but it’s not for me. I love what you write about TV. It really has plummeted and we find ourselves watching only college basketball and Jeopardy. (Boy do we sound old!!) We axed Netflix and it felt quite liberating. I’d rather watch my sewing friends, too.😄I’m uncertain how to strike a balance between speaking to beginner sewers while keeping it interesting for veterans. I guess I’ll learn more as I go along and listen to my feedback. To say I appreciate your kindness and support is just such an understatement, but I’m saying it anyway. Thanks again!! Have a wonderful week!!🌸

    You are very brave to start cutting out one pattern piece before pinning all of the pieces to the fabric. Do you ever get to the last few pieces and find you don't have enough fabric? My mother, who was very "thrifty," taught me to sew. She would have refolded your fabric bringing the two salvage edges into the center so you could probably have cut the two main pattern pieces side by side. Her goal, secondary to making the garment, was to end up with the largest continuous leftover scrap possible, rather than a number of smaller scraps. Large scraps meant she could use them for another small project. Thrifty!

  • @vivmomsews4962

    @vivmomsews4962

    Hi Deborah, your mom sounds like a very smart seamstress. I always do the two folds in from the selvedges to see if I can cut my pants that way; it was impossible for this pattern. But I know that I have enough fabric before cutting, so it doesn’t bother me to chop off swaths to keep things manageable. I’m fortunate to have a quilting sister (and she runs a weekly quilt club) who is keen on any scraps I give her. If my scraps are big enough, they go to her. Smaller pieces get tossed. I’ve no interest in trying to piece little scraps together. But I hang onto them until the project is done, just in case I might need to recut something small (sometimes I have.) Thanks for writing!

But a new great grandchild was on the way a couple of years ago and I was acheing to just MAKE SOMETHING FOR IT.. so I tackled a small quilt! And.. lo and behold .. I could sew patchwork with one hand.. !?! It wasnt perfect in the end but it was finished! So now I have the bug to sew for myself, since getting out shopping is difficult in a wheelchair... BUT .. BUYING FABRIC AND PATTERNS ONLINE .. WELL you all know ..soo.. there is a big stash for a new wardrobe whether or not, sewing garments is going to be possible... but the desire is there, so “how hard can it be?” And watching Vivians videos have inspired me so much..I just have to clean off the sewing table.. get at the machine and JUST DO IT,! ... thanks vivmom.. you are so fun to watch.. your clothing is very lovely, as are you.. so glad I found you. How magnificent that you completed it with the use of only one hand. And yes! Sewing awaits! Patterns and fabric are oh-so-easy to purchase online - my videos can attest to that! You will be able to do marvelous things with your exceptional attitude and strength of will - and physical strength. I imagine that your body compensates for what had been damaged in the stroke. Keep getting stronger, and keep those creative ideas churning. I’m so happy you’re here! Thanks again for writing to me, for your enthusiasm and compliments too. Lovely to meet you!😄

    Hi! I use pins and scissors, too! And always mark the right side unless it is really obvious! Thanks for this helpful tutorial! I've lost a lot of weight, and looking to make some shorts for summer. I think this pattern would be good for a short-waisted fit.

    You're making good use of that new tri-pod! Thank you for this useful tutorial. I'm going to be using this tip for the waist. I didn't mind the time because it was enjoyable seeing your entire process. For me, I have to use the lines to shorten the pattern for pants. On dresses, I do what you do and cut the longest length. You're pants look great and I can't wait to see your other makes. Happy stitching.

    Aww Debbie, thank you. I think this was too long for a tutorial. I know that when I’m looking for immediate help, I go to the shortest length available! lol Then again, it’s hard to compress everything you want to put across. I’m definitely going to try and make tutorials shorter. A new challenge! Yes - the new tripod! It’s great.😄👍

    I think that was Trix (the black and white kitty.) Zig (my ultimate favorite cat) is camera shy and seems to know when I’m filming. I would love to introduce him to everyone but he’s very private. Trix is a hurricane and I like to see him retreating from the sewing table, rather than heading straight for it!!😂 Thanks for writing, Elaine.

    One of my earliest teaching assignments was kindergarten, and I remember one of my students asked me how old I was. I asked her old she thought I was. "Really old," she said. I asked her why. She said, " Your hands have all those lines. I had the bad luck of inheriting my father's hands. Next time a student asked my age, I just told them.

    Thanks Robin! I love jeans, too. I just don’t know about making them. I feel like if I made them myself they wouldn’t be tough enough. Cuz I’m pretty rough on my jeans. I’ll never say never, but sewing jeans wouldn’t be a priority for me. I never owned dress pants either, really still don’t. My favorite pants to sew have the back zip (so far) because every pair I’ve made in that style feel great. I like having them in so many casual fabrics, but I forget to wear them! I’m always reaching for ... you guessed it ...jeans.
