How I Do a Set In Sleeve ~ Sewing Basics ~

Ойын-сауық

I’m kind of afraid to post this. I know there are many ways to do a set in sleeve, I hope I haven’t offended anyone! It’s been a rough week with a complication from the dental surgery - I’ll spare you the details. Thank you for helping me push ahead. You are all wonderful!!

We say “Press” where I come :-) You look fabulous! You remind me of a cross between Anne Margaret and Kathy Lee Gifford. I love your videos. I have been sewing for over 40 years, but still sew like a beginner :-/ Your videos are really helpful and I always look forward to them.

I say this: any sewing is good sewing. Speed doesn’t matter, output doesn’t matter, perfection doesn’t matter. What matters is the craft - the scheming and deciding and making a garment come to life. The problem solving, the memory work, the learning, the exhilaration. So if you’re sewing, I am cheering for you!!👏👏

Excellent tutorial. I'm so glad to learn how to crimp instead of gathering 2 rows. I'm self taught from the 70's and had never heard of that.

Yes!!!!!! That did help me!!! Always intimidated with sleeves!!!! Basting is a great idea. You do not look ugly!!! I am 64 and have the most hideous skin as I have tons of freckles and age spots. I love gardening and fishing in my kayak and well….. sun does horrible things to skin and dirt isn’t very kind to nails. 💕

I like machine sewing just as much as anyone who sews. However, there are times, like your set-in sleeve, that hand basting becomes a sewer's best friend! Hand basting allows me to even further ease the seams together, get the pins out of the way, and to sew a lovely sleeve into place, and get it right the first time without having to rip out the seam, repeat, and maybe even pull my hair out! I often hand baste collars, cuffs, and any place that I think needs a little special easing to make it just right! Bravo to you for taking the brief amount of time to hand baste! I enjoy your videos, and it's nice to see someone who enjoys sewing their own clothing or clothing for others.

Oh my goodness , you are so joyful and pleasant to listen to! You are an amazing teacher ! I have taught sewing myself and I have learned 3 things this morning -the crimping technique ( just watched that video) , if it says baste -BASTE!! , and go buy ( or make ) that Pressing Ham!! Seriously, been sewing for decades, and you have taught me SO MUCH in one half hour with coffee . I recently bought that pattern too, isn’t it the cutest? Bless you for your kindness and sweet spirit!

This is so nice, Wendy!💕Thank you for writing these wonderful words to me. Gosh. First, let me say that I really appreciate you complimenting my teaching style. Eek, I listen back on some of these videos and cringe at the way I sound. But hopefully the techniques come through.👍And as far as showing the patterns, that’s my biggest joy. 🌸 I love to sew them up and show them on a regular person. I’m so happy you’re watching and enjoying. I think you’ll like crimping. Welcome! Thank you!

Thanks so much, this really helped me being a beginner sewist. I'd already worked out that two rows of gathering stitches was hopeless, I got more puckers with that approach, so I'd already come to the realisation that one row of gathering stitches was plenty. what I had not tried was sewing the sleeve with the gathers on the upside and the flat bodice on the feed dog side. I think that's a brilliant way to sew it to help ensure there are no major puckers. Thank you for showing us. I've taken up sewing while turning 50! And I love it. It's creative and I'm learning so much. From New Zealand. So appreciate you.

Thank you!! I just happened to be doing this for the 1st time today but pattern called for the double stitch gathering. I thought I could do it with a single stitch. I've been sewing bags and other non-clothing stuff for years, but feared venturing into clothing, cause I fear it just won't fit right. However, I ran across your videos a few weeks ago, and you have inspired me. Btw...you look beautiful. No worries on how casual you are. Don't we all sew in our PJs...I did today 🙂

You did a great job making this understandable. You really are a good teacher; your approach is a nice balance of information and inspiration! I learned something after sewing for more than a decade earlier in my life. I had never heard of crimping, and I never realized that double notches are always used for the back of a project, and single notches are used on the front. Love that! One suggestion, go easy on yourself. You look great, even though not feeling well and you speak well. You're relateable. In my humble opinion, if you were someone most of us will never be doing something most of us can never do, you wouldn't be the rising star that you are! I hope you feel 100% soon.

I will have to give this method a go Viv! The whole reason I only sew stretch fabrics, is because I can sew them in via the 'flat' method. Whenever I have tried to get sleeves in woven items, I always end up with a gathered sleeve head, and call it a 'design feature', but one day I'd like to have a normal sleeve on a woven top/dress! 🙄😂 Sorry to hear you were poorly when you kindly made this video, and trust you are well now! As always, TFS 👍❤

Hi Margaret!🌸How fantastic that you sewed all your own clothes “back in the day!” I have heard this from several others as well, and I am in awe! (Did you check out my 1960’s dresses? I like sewing them with a modem aesthetic.) If you did want to sew again, I can say that there are myriad patterns in all styles and sizes. No shortage of choices. Ditto fabrics, though shopping online for fabric is the norm now and not the exception. The sewing world has changed, and yet it remains gloriously the same, which is the beauty of it. I’ve had to get past the plastic-y feeling after all of the beautiful solid old Kenmores and my Featherweight, and sometimes I pull those out to sew on them. There are wonderful aspects to the SB3129, for sure. I’m so glad you love yours!!😄👍Hope the crimping works for you, keep at it because it’s good stuff.

So there I was, just chillin, thinking to myself.. "I know how to put a sleeve in, but I'm gonna watch this because I like Viv..." Then I learned some things! Dang Viv, here I was thinking I'm too cool for school and you just proved me wrong! Ok, so I had no idea that there is a whole faction of people out there who don't use the notches!!! What!?!?!? It has inspired me to try breaking the rules just to see how it goes. Ok, also, while I was aware of crimping, and have done it before, I have not tried it on a sleeve head, so that was an excellent tip. Also, I never realized that the double notches are always in the back! I guess I just assumed people put them wherever they felt like it! Attention to detail has never been my strong suit though... Ok, enough gushing. And you look pretty fabulous as usual. You should see what I sew in!!!

I've used this same method of easing, but I tend to pin like crazy and baste the sleeve in by machine. I usually get a tuck or two but the basting is easy to rip out, so it's easy to correct. I really should try the hand basting method because it's really would be so much more precise. You were very brave to use the polyester for your tutorial, but it does help us see that it can be done. Both ways are perfectly acceptable - it’s really personal preference. I think I saw a video with Nancy Zieman demo’ing the sleeve-up and I’ve been using it almost exclusively these days, so thought I’d share. I’m so happy that it’s been a helpful video. Thank you for letting me know, cristina!😃👍
