Sewing a 1940s flowy sleeve rayon dress | Vintage sewing project + sew with me
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Today I am sewing a 1940s dress that has beautiful flowy sleeves and gathering along the hips. I used a rayon crepe to make this. I used an authentic vintage sewing pattern Simplicity 4088.

I love how you broke down the cost of materials and also your labor. This is very helpful and honestly I need to start doing this for my own projects and content. Here’s to a living wage!

Yes I think the more creators talk about how long it takes to make something it'll help connect the dots between costs and labor!
I'm here because of The Closet Historian. Just subscribed, too. 🙂

Turned out amazing! I love the fabric and flowiness!
Hi Haley Marie. I love the dress you made one I could wear my self. It really makes you look slim
I liked the fact that labor part of sewing a garment in the that would sew for other the labor plus the use of my utilities and when quote a price I few takers wish was fine by me ,serious customers always were willing to cover the expense .

Totally agree! Luckily my customer is just myself lol
I live about an hour from Seattle. $23-$30 an hour is livable when saving to buy a home and having kids without is about $20-$25 depending honestly how you budget and all that fun stuff. I enjoy your videos and what you do
Super duper cute!!
Really lovely, love the fabric, probably my favorite so far. you did a great job. May I ask for a Spooky Show?? Spooky at play, Spooky asleep, in the garden, on holiday, in the snow, funny moments etc. she is so cute she deserves her own show, ??? what do you think?? xx from the UK xx

I am planning some Spooky videos this year!
Thank you for sharing your struggles in addition to your success!
Oh I am excited for this one! I love seeing artists grow.
Pretty fabric and pattern! I’ve learned through maddening experience to use shorter scissors with rounded tips for risky cuts like that. Conversely, embroidery scissors are good for small sharp points like that front V-neck. Also, I recommend pinning on a cutting mat (or other hard surface you don’t mind scratching with pins) to get a nice flat pairing. Finally, I never trust a standard hem - few of us are quite symmetrical or curved exactly like the pattern model, so it’s not a bad idea to mark on a customized mannequin for those who have one (or get a friend to mark it when you have it on). There’s also some kind of stick and chalk contraption for this as well, but I’ve never looked into it, lol.
So pretty! Rayon scares me! I need to get more familiar with working with that fabric. 😬

Honestly rayon isn't too bad, it's a good intro into the more slippery fabrics.
I love it it's a fabulous dress 👗👗 xx
Beautiful! And the seam finishes, I always get so excited about beautiful seam finishes, so I want to especially congratulate you on those cuz I feel like a lot if people don't realize how exciting they are. Every time I put on something I've made with perfect seam finishes I get a burst of serotonin, I wish the same for you 🙃 For Rayons, there's one I really love that you might like too, it's Somoi, 58 inches wide viscose rayon in pale yellow with blue geometric flowers. It is on Amazon, so it is understandable if you have qualms with that. But I love it so much I've ordered it 3 times, once to line a summer blazer and then to make a dressing gown (underestimated the amount I needed foe the skirt), it's so soft and flowy, I put it on as soon as I get home from work.

Such a beautiful dress on you! Were you more nervous for this project because it didn't go well before? So proud to see where you are now in your sewing journey xx

No because I know I am worlds better of a seamstress now, the only part of it that gave me anxiety was cutting the slit in the neckline
Love your fabric & notions choices! I adore watching you make your Blue Dream wardrobe. Do you own a narrow hem foot? They make hemming lightweight fabrics like rayon so much easier. Cheers 🥂 to your inside finishings🙌

Thank you! I do have a narrow foot, I feel like they never work well for me so I just prefer going at it by hand!
I don't know why but I haven't received any notices about your new videos. I realized I haven't seen any new videos from you but thought that maybe you took time off for the holidays so I checked and saw recent postings. So, I don't know what's going on. Also I love that umbrella dish that you use as a pin holder. Love it. And love Spooky.

Oh bummer, youtube can be so strange sometimes, glad you got to catch up!
I bought a vintage handmade dress on Etsy that was listed as 100% cotton… yeah I’m pretty sure it’s rayon. It had old worn elastic and was fraying everywhere, so I took it apart to reinforce the seams. BUT I have a short torso and want to shorten the bodice when I put new elastic in. Maybe I could use French seams to make the elastic channel and just shorten it naturally that way without cutting fabric off.

Great work on the dress. With rayon you may wish to hang it before hemming.

Super cute dress. You did a great job! In the beginning, I thought you mentioned something about a belt in the pattern. Did you decide not to use the belt for this dress? I enjoy hearing you talk about the overall process of making your garments in your video wrap-ups!

I always skip belts, I never wear them so they're a waste of time for me to make.

@@HaleyMarieVintage Cool, thanks! I have a love-hate relationship with belts. Sometimes, I'm like, yeah, that's cute with a belt. And sometimes, I hate them!

Hi. May I ask if you didn't want to zip it up completely or is it meant to be like that? Thanks so much.
@HaleyMarieVintage

I thought I had zipped it up all the way but realized in the footage I hadn't, it does zip all the way up!

French seam the zipper? I think you may have to do a whole video showing how that is done because it doesn't sound possible. Maybe you are calling it French seams and it's something else.
@HaleyMarieVintage
Жыл бұрын
So basically I french seam to the zipper and then use the stitching lines around the zipper to double fold for super clean seams
