I am old enough to remember this dress, and I can second your thought that this was a dress to be worn around the house! In fact, it fell into a category that no longer exists: the housedress! The housedress was for working around the house, where so much of a woman’s life and work took place, but not intended for public outings. In my memory’s eye, I see women wearing curlers and pincurls while wearing it around the immediate neighborhood, surrounded by other women and children. A pattern that was quick, easy, required no repeated fittings, and slipped off in an instant so a woman could change clothes to leave the neighborhood or greet her returning husband was so useful! It seems like centuries since women in North America lived this way, but it was within living memory.

This dress would look gorgeous with a Christmas plaid inside, and black velvet outside.

That does sound beautiful, I felt like the choice of fabrics paired with the way the bias was done with a solid color is part of what made that look overall more like an apron, while is she had done it in the colors and fabric of the one she is wearing (super gorgeous) with the same fabric for bias, would look far more dresslike.

Hi, I remember my mother wearing this exact dress! Back then they had house dresses which they cleaned in took care of their families in and wore if they had to run to the shops. If you turned the binding to where you couldn’t see it , the dress would look casual but more dressy. Material makes a big difference also from casual to dressy.🥰

I think if it had been made in solid colors or maybe a small print on the inside and solid on the outside it wouldn’t look so much like an apron. The walk away dress is gorgeous . I was born in the late 1950s and I remember these dresses. Personally I find them adorable.

I think my grandmother had the same sewing machine. She used to sew all my mother's and aunt's dresses in the 1930's, 40's, 50's, and into the 60's. She stopped as she grew too old to do other than darn because her arthritis pained her. She would love to see people like yourself keeping the patterns and projects alive.

The dress you're wearing is stunning! I think this Walk Away dress challenge looks so much like an apron because of the material so many people are choosing (like quilting cotton) and the bias tape edges. I'm getting ready to make mine but chose a flowing fabric, and will eliminate the bias where I can. (I definitely want a dress I can wear often). One last thought, always such a fan of your accounts!

I agree. The fabric, the print, and the bias tape gives it more of a homespun apron-y feel. I think a black/white combo, maybe in a silk shantung or raw silk would really elevate it.

All the bias can be eliminated and replaced with a facing. But i think if people also bought nice bias that's not rough cotton, But lace, silk, the beautiful foldable elastics made their own matching bias it would look stunning. It's really amazing how much fabric choice changes the look of a garment.

Check out The Van Maren Family channel, she did a plain dark blue using the 4790 pattern (reproduction of the original). I think her dress looks amazing and formal enough. She also didn't do the full circle skirt but it still looks lovely.

Eh I think those flour sack style patterns are probably appropriate for the era. My guest is a lot of poorer women with fewer skills and time and resources made this dress along with the middle class. I think it’s pretty but I don’t regularly dress in vintage style.

Actually, love the walkaway dress. I think the fabric you selected reminds me of an apron from the mid-to-late 50s. Your sewing skill and clothing style continues to leave me awestruck.

It would make an excellent dress for Christmas morning if you are hosting visiting family, fully dressed but in a deliberate vintage style perfect for serving breakfast and opening presents. Wear it thru lunch, then dress down into stretch pants for watching a football game and going back for thirds.

I agree. The walk-a-way dress should be two solid colors or a print and a solid, but not two prints. She even compares it to the dress she's wearing... a solid with a print. Additionally, the walk-a-way pattern needs to be patterned on both sides of its material. She chose a one-sided print. Any wrap-around is going to look apron-like with those choices. That said, I personally still love what she did, even with its more casual look.

I made this dress in a dark blue with big flower knit print. I modernized it a bit by shortening the front (i actually had to in order to get the pieces cut due to fabric limitations) and I LOVE This dress. I think the colors you chose might have been a reason for why you felt it looked apron like. I made mine in one print the whole dress with a solid color for the binding. I honestly get so many compliments when i wear mine and "where did you buy it" a lot.

I came across this video, and I have to tell you the first thing I thought was "oh my gosh...it's 1965 again!!" My mom wore her hair like that when she was at home; rolled up in little prickly curlers, and wrapped in a floral scarf... Thanks for the walk down memory lane...my mom just passed in April so this was pure nostalgia ❤️ And of course, I subscribed...😊

I completely agree that this pattern has an apron feel. I rushed to watch your video because I thought if anyone could make it look like a real dress it would be you. I just want to remind you that she didn't use the Butterick reproduction pattern, she used a traced version of the original (which I doubt they sell on Butterick's website). If you prefer her version of the dress to other youtubers', you'll want to try to find the traced original pattern, not use the reproduction even if it's a good price. :D I agree that her version is the best I've seen, it just fits her better. Edited to add that I just saw a video by Stephanie Canada where she compared the OG vintage pattern and the reproduction, and they were very different!

Hi there, I have been watching the different submissions for the walk away dress. Although you personally do not like how your dress turned out, I would have to say , from where I am viewing, it looks beautiful on you. It was only when you showed the apron side by each with the Walk away dress that I could understand your point of view. Regardless, change the material, change the Or eliminate the bias binding, and the dress would have a different vibe,. Quite honestly just about anything you whipped up would look great on you imo! Loved that you showed us your turquoise sewing machine.. it is a real treasure for sure! This challenge was such a success imo in bringing together sewists from all walks of life, really enjoyed ‘meeting’ you! 😊❤😊

That walkway dress reminds me of what my mom would call a house coat or house dress. It is cute.

In my prior kitchen, I did my cabinets in plum, pumpkin, & deep sage. My daughter said she felt like she was dining in a Panera, but I loved it.

I just love everything about this video. Your cabinets, counter canisters, your machine, etc. I think the dress turned out cute for what it is, and I enjoyed your breakdown on what it took to get it done. Using the red plaid and floral makes the Walkaway Dress really cute. I would use it for a house dress or maybe go to the store or take the kids to the park. It is kind of apron looking but cute.

You did a GORGEOUS job on your Walk-away dress!! And that sewing machine is --mmmm-wha!! - chef’s kiss fantastic!!! I’ve been hunting the local markets for an inexpensive temp replacement for my Pfaff that’s in repair right now. OMGolly - I’ve been bitten by the 1950’s-1970’s vintage machine bug! They are so cool! I learned to sew on a beautiful 1940’s Art Deco style Necchi in a massive mahogany cabinet and while I don’t have space for something that grand - I’d love to find a gem somewhere to repair and give some new life to. Wish me luck - and joyous sewing to you….and bless those little kiddies - they grow up far too quickly!.,💕

The dress came out really pretty! Looking at it, I wonder if the bias tape you used played a role in the apron feel. What if you made bias tape out of the main fabrics instead of red? Would that perhaps make you feel better about how it turned out? Either way, you did a great job putting it together. The vibe you created with this video is on point, too. Yes, I agree with you on everything. I definitely love the dress she's wearing better. I have my mother's old sewing machine and I used to use it for small things. I would love to be better at making things as she does.

I do love the walkaway dress concept,but after watching several different seamstresses do their version and with not so much love at the end for their product, I'm reluctant now to make one myself. However I think every single dress was beautiful, and it's difficult for me to see the flaws or whatever it is that so many have seen. It's true that the Christmas prints give the dress an apron vibe, but it would still be a cute dress to wear at Christmas for brunch or whatever.

imo if the part of the dress that wraps around the front were lined, and if ppl had a crinoline skirt to wear beneath, those two changes 🤷🏻‍♀️might🤷🏻‍♀️ elevate the dress enough to look "not apron." Although capped sleeves would sure help, too! lol.

LOL. My first car (c 1964) was a red 1955 Thunderbird with a white removable hard top. I was 18. When my daughter (born when I was 21) made a derogatory comment about her first car when she was 18 I countered with “For YOU I had to give up my T-bird because your playpen didn’t fit!”

My first impression when I saw this on Stephanie's video was that it was an apron. As popular as this pattern was when Butterick first offered it, my mother, supreme seamstress who could sew anything, didn't have this pattern in her collection accrued over decades of sewing. I'm guessing she saw it as an apron and she had apron patterns she really liked, and this pattern takes a lot of fabric which her frugal housewife mentality considered unnecessary. You did a fantastic job on your dress, love the colors and your expertise.

The thing that I liked about that extra fabric is, it's got plenty of room to flex through body changes... But still, I couldn't see myself using so much extra fabric either, lol. I do wonder about using a jersey knit for the drape, and going with an intentionally unfinished edge, or maybe just a single zigzag, and a casual, overlapped seam style for the speed it'll work up. I've got some really cheap jersey sheets that I've been planning to do something housedress-like for home wear.

This looks lovely! Great job. As a mom who is learning to sew I appreciate seeing someone who includes those details.

Love the video. True story: my mother made a sack dress (in the 50's). A year later she went through a divorce, and soon after mom's teenage daughter, in a snit, moved out to her dad's and took a bunch of clothes, including that sack dress. Mom had started working in an office of a local factory. Mom's ex remarried and that woman also worked at the same factory. She showed up in mom's sack dress! Boy, the chattering that went on that day in the office!

Haha, maybe the only way one can do it in that amount of time while watching their kids, is to cordone them off in one room with no-spill cups of water and unlimited snacks.🤣🤣🤣 That’s how my setup looks in my mind’s eye.😅

I think the secret to this dress is fabric choice. I agree that most of them look like aprons, but I can see that maybe certain fabrics might be more or less dress like, and adding a petticoat would help with the lines of the dress. I haven't made one yet but I do want to, and I plan to alter the shoulders to be narrower which might help. But I do think it looks lovely on you.

I loved your video. The sewing machine was a classic and I also love your kitchen cabinests. I can tell you have a great deal of artistic talent!

I think the prints and bias tape choices are really important with this dress. Also, these vintage pattern styles look best on hourglass figures. In absence of curves, you need to move the waist up or reslope the pattern.

Foundation garments gave women a much smaller waist than most women could possibly have naturally. Looking at 1930s bridal ads once, and comparing them to modern ads, I saw the difference immediately. Their waists were tiny! Not by nature. I told my husband that they were trussed up like Christmas turkeys.

It's awesome seeing someone that sews.. I watched my aunt sewing in my younger days, I wished I had taken the time to learn how..She sewed as a home professional to maintain her home and children..

I believe that the color red would have been a more aesthetically pleasing choice than the Christmas pattern, but I still greatly appreciate the effort and creativity that went into the work.

I love the dress you wear at the end. I love your beautiful sewing machine. I wonder if your fabric choice contributed to the apron aesthetic? It seems like the plaid and print are fighting each other.

One tiny hint from a long time sewer. It was a lesson I learned way back in the 60s! Always press your seams as you sew. My projects always looked “rough” when I started too. The steam iron is as important as your sewing machine! It makes the difference between your creations looking “Homemade” or not. It only takes a bit of time as you sew, but the results are amazing. You reminded me of how my Mom and I would go to the fabric store, buying patterns, fabrics, buttons, patches, etc. My Mom could literally do anything! The World is better for her having been in it and less so, now that she is in Heaven. She deserves Heaven, if anyone does! Love you Mommy! I'll carry on all that you tried to instill! Give hugs and kisses to everyone! I'll see you when it's time. Until then... trying to make you all proud!

YES! APRON! That’s exactly it! I think the fabric choices we see for this dress don’t help, mostly quilting cottons and that really adds to that feel. I’d like to see an all in one colour viscose version and see if it has the same issue. I mean it’s similar to the zadie jumpsuit in the bias bound edges,minimal tailoring and grown on sleeve and those don’t have to feel apron-y…

The fit looked great and flattering on you. The fabrics you selected are one reason why it looks like an apron. Solid colors in silk crepe de chine and sewing a horsehair braid to the hem to accentuate the flare (like in the illustration) would look gorgeous on you 😊

I love the dress. It is adorable. I think the material is a great choice true to the Era. However, it still does have a modern feel. Your lovely appearance makes you the perfect model for this style of dress.

I've recently embraced my vintage aesthetic as it's something I always leaned toward but never went all the way. I've been sewing simple things as I'm a novice, I mostly just alter thrifted things and pieces that I already have so they look more tailored. I was so happy to see another black vintage girl! I feel like I hardly see other black women in vintage recommended to me unless I go digging.

You look amazing in both dresses. You are right that the first dress was baggy in the shoulder and back and could use some more shaping. It looked adorable, though. The second dress was a knockout! And Oh My Gosh, your kitchen and sewing machine are fabulous! That must be a quilt machine because the bed is so wide for quilting.

After watching a few of these challenge videos for this dress, I like yours the best so far. Your vintage machine is beautiful and your details about how you got it working again are very helpful. Thank you for showing the walk away dress next to the cobbler's apron. That side by side comparison highlights the unfitted style of the bodice next to the apron, and why I will use my time to make a different pattern that I would be happier with.

I would totally wear this as a kitchen apron. It covers all your clothes. Especially good for when you're prepping in the kitchen wearing other good fancy clothes.

Yes, your rendition does look like an apron, but that is because of the fabrics you chose. It's adorable and you wear it beautifully.

Non sew-er here. The skill involved in sewing amazes me. I'd love to make my own clothes, but probably too old to learn new tricks, lol. The dress is really lovely, and I agree that the pattern/material used really determines whether the dress will be casual at home or more fancy to wear out. Either way a winner!

I happened upon you channel. I think your home vintage look, your style your beautiful sewing machine are gorgeous.
