Severance: Facts You Probably Don't Know + Some Theories

Ойын-сауық

In this video I'll go over several interesting details, facts and secrets about the show from the production angle with plenty of theory teasers., so strap on the old tinfoil hat. I''ll be covering the Lumon building, Milchick and The Music Dance Experience, a possible hint about a food theory and the 10th episode of season one that we never got.
Thanks for watching and don't hesitate to suggest ideas for future videos!

Always good to see an upload. Still psyched for the next season. Edit: I wonder if the egg is a metaphor since there's so much symbolism peppered throughout the show. Egg has shell, inner yolk outter egg white. I'm probably just reaching randomly lol

Yo! Good to see you, man. Yeah, I think you might be right about the egg's significance in the show. A symbol or birth and the idea of being isolated works well with the theme. I just think it's odd that he felt like it was so necessary, even though he hates them, it's gotta mean something lol.

When I think about the process of making deviled eggs it’s pretty parallel to the severance procedure; they take the yolk - the “brain” cell, reshape it and insert it back to the protein, the “body” for this analogy.

Also, I think the dialogue cut was a great decision too. Irivings storyline in the final episode was a masterpiece in show don’t tell and a wonderful showcase of John turturros skill. I wonder if at least the original script they’d been using pre lockdowns are floating around aside from episode 10.

Bit late to the party but about eggs: the foodless dinner party has a discussion about how food isn't life, it is just fuel. So eating eggs likely draws a parallel to how the 'newborn' personalities of innies aren't seen as living people, but merely as fuel.

I live in Holmdel and go to Bell Works (the new name for the Bell Labs site) quite often. The ground floor is a public space with basketball courts and a turf area, shops, a couple of restaurants, a gallery, and a library branch. If you make the trip be sure to grab a drink at the Bella Bar and check out the view of the complex from the back deck. You can see the stone wall that appears in the show, but the carving of Kier's head is an FX, sorry.

Apparently the SAG/AFTRA strike is moving closer to a resolution, so that’s a bit of good news. I'm almost always more interested in how a production is made than the actual show, so this is great. In fact, I welcome more. Your slant is more interesting than rabbit hole online. So, if you're up for it, please do. Everything in the show is significant. Hey, what's with Milcheck's hair? Having now seen the actor, I'm wondering if they slapped a wig on him. Most unnatural natural, like it's got some weird product or is synthetic or something. Has a grandpappy retired to Miami vibe. He's my favorite actor, not necessarily character. Don't pick favorite first season of a mystery. But those cold, focused, predatory eyes, over that blinding smile. That's not easy to pull off, unless you're sincere or a really good actor, without looking cringe phony demented. He's beautiful.

  • @nautilusfiles

    @nautilusfiles

Oh, there's a lot more of that. I cut out so much in the edit because people seem to prefer the videos be 10-12 mins or so. Stiller gushed over his performance in an interview, saying that he has a natural, magnetic charisma, but also the ability to turn it completely, like a switch, when he's acting. He's got that magic combo of presence, training and natural charisma. I see big things for him. As for "Milchick", I think you have been right about him here and in the past; he's ripe for a major face-turn. He needs incentive, a moment of clarity and realignment, or Lumon needs to wound him. Whatever it may be, they need to use this man's potential ability steal scenes by keep his arc mainstream. Always a pleasure, GG.

The Holmdel complex isn't "Brutalist" at all. It's very firmly "Midcentury American". Saarinen was often criticized for not having a discernible style. He was a neo- futurist designer and maybe a little muted and ultimately Corporatist or even Bureaucratic but not at all Brutalist in the proper sense.

Babies/children I couldn't help but notice the focus on children the show has. I don't know if this is much of a theory, or just an observation of a recurring theme. - We have the actual birth of a child. - Mark and Gemma used to teach and tried to have a kid. - Dylan is a father. - Hellena has a birthright legacy - Innies are like children - Eggs being important - Goats being born - Petey has a daughter - the birth retreat - Young people are rebellious to the older era - Irv's "what's for dinner *kids* - Cobel's motherly abilities - Alexa is a midwife - Reghabi hiding out in a school - You've pointed out strange/child like behavior of Ricken's friends. - Peggy drove a bus with a bunch of kids Almost every character has something to do with "kids" in some way. Not sure if this could be sins of the father, nature vs nurture, what we leave for our children, generational trauma, etc.

Personally I'd love it if Severance had a similar progression to LOST, every season having it's own distinct identity, slowly but surely getting crazier and more outlandish in a way that feels earned and tie it all up with a emotional end that reminds us all it was always more about the characters than some superficial mysteries. All the while providing context and answers to things if you pay enough attention, not just spoon feeding everything to the audience.

I think the egg connection on a superficial level might have something to do with the fact that you've got the egg yolk insidethe wgg white- an innie and an outie- but both are still part of the same whole. Not sure what the egg shell symbolises, but I agree with Ben Stiller that eggs aren't my favourite food (I used ot enjoy them but I've become allergic over the years). Eggs are also commonly used as an emulsifying agent, so I wonder if that could be representative of the severance process in some manner?

I always found it interesting that they are given finger traps as a reward. It seems odd and potentially meaningful as they’re pretty much meant to prevent them from working but idk why that would be helpful for Lumon. The color especially seems to intentionally contrasts with everything and makes them feel like obvious and important props in terms of set design as well I also noticed some small things on rewatching that may be important, like who was helping Milchick and the security guard wake up Dylan on the outside? Cobel was in disguise with the baby so who was operating the second switch? Or Ms. Cobel humming the kier song to the baby makes me think she’s actually a diehard follower. Maybe she was actually the reason Lumon was able to kill the feeding tube lawsuit, rather than having a vendetta because of it.

Most productions, including television, are shot "out of order," but rather by location. It is too expensive to do it any other way. Office exterior, office interior, residential exterior, residential exterior. Might use the outside of one house, but the interior of another house. All scenes in each one shot before moving on to the next location. The contacts necessitate it's shot that way. There are people, like me (in my former life), arranging the production calendar to keep it all straight. And performers just have to deal. That's what they get paid to do....

Severance and Nuclear winter or Peace with no TV. Those were your two options. Stop muddying fate by claiming our timeline is anything other than the only state of perfect iteration that it currently is.

One interesting possible implication of the anti severance political movement is that if severance were made illegal and all companies were mandated to use it this would effectively be a mass murder of all existing innies- the group that advocates are trying to protect. I think you’d have to have some kind of agreement to either load the innie personality into another host of some kind or have the life continue to be split so the innie could live out theirs. Sort of like the cookies rights movement in black mirror.

1992? I don’t know?? They had windows 3.1 Try 1984. Sorry for the nitpick, I’m stoned. These videos remain unimpeachably erudite.

I got my first pc in 88', and this one looks similar to it and the pc I had back in 92'. The truth is the thick, round-edged, molded plastic look was a popular for a couple of decades, which I think was the goal regarding the set design choices. It's all meant to be as vague a representation of the idea as possible.

Yeah actors NEVER have been paid their just dues. At least give them a $15 dollar "living wage"?

Oh, the dripping sarcasm! I think you are conflating A-List actors with the typical actor. The vast majority of actors do not make enough to live o. Take minute to learn about the subject.
