Mind you this is a 9yr old group who are doing something fresh and innovative and slaying so HARD with their production and MV's and choreo. Not a new young groups. Though the new gen have some great stuff too of course. But this is a 9yr old group who could be pulling back on the crazy choreo, doing something a bit more simple for MV's if they wanted, settling into a signature sound they don't have to stray too much from....yet we get this? This is why Seventeen are iconic because after 9 yrs they are still pushing themselves and the boundries.

Absolutely loved your take on their comeback. I love seeing artists push their creative boundary and thats the primary reason I became such a fan of Seventeen. I also want to compliment how well you break down the work and point out sounds that not everyone can hear initially

Very ironic you said it feels like the future and they start dancing with robots. After watching the trailers I didn't know what to expect overall from the title track but this was so pleasant. Especially the production. Vocally they sound so good too and I love the variations of their voices. I bet Woozi played the instruments himself lol. p.s. I keep saying Wonwoo should be an actor because his scene felt like an action film

@@hhhhhhhhhh- That's so cool! I'm definitely proud of how they used a choreographer who knows Afrobeats and Amapiano to choreograph this. A major issue that I had with Le Sserafim is that they didn't use choreographers who knew the genre well and just did a cheap imitation of the real thing. Props to SVT!

I love your honest reaction so much! I really get you with the vocal unit's song being really distant but since they technically aren't given songs and they produce it themselves then are finalized by the unit members, I think it has something to do with the different vibes of each unit, just like how Monster is in Seventeenth Heaven. From my observation, Woozi doesn't really prioritize fitting in songs together with regards to the sound since I could see that he usually goes with how the group is doing in each era and what they wanna tell their listeners. Their top priority is what sound and message they wanna convey so with sentimental songs, they go for a simpler sound that they could sing with fans at concerts and I really think that they take it into account that it's really relaxed and has enough instrumental parts so they could speak over it (they loooove talking over instrumentals when they wanna say cheesy or emotional stuff to fans)

Ok, this is about to be nerdy and long. But, I think Maestro was so well done both in song and video and I think both visual and audio were so thematically consistent. In the first teaser, they proposed the question: “In our current reality where anything can be created by AI, who is the real maestro?” So, we had that in mind coming into this release. Sonically, There were some wild switches in this, from the beat switches to the genre switches, especially for Wonwoo’s intro w the techno beat and Minghao’s return in. I think the very form of this represented this purposeful lack of consistency in genre or tempo which I think represents novelty of human creativity. This is echoed lyrically in that they are essentially narrating production and creation in and of itself, using musical terms throughout and explaining instrumentals. Visually you see this fight between humanhood as the true basis for art vs technological replacements - either fighting them, being controlled by them, or outpacing them (saying you can’t do this like I can - to me I think the heavy footwork is part of that in that final chorus that layers the two parts of the previous choruses). The use of generative AI in art does make you question the order of what comes first, because if we keep feeding off AI in the creative process it becomes a crutch that will eventually cut off the artist themself while the distance between the creation and the creator widens to become nearly entirely disconnected. So, who is the maestro? Who is guiding, leading the music here? do we leverage tech or do we let tech leverage us? [pause for tangent] (And I’m not talking about anything like sentience of whatever that’s not really what AI is. It’s just this tool that we are too greedy and lazy to bypass on a larger, cultural, capitalistic sense, y’know - it’s funny bc I remember in English classes in school learning that conflict can be man vs machine, man vs self, man vs society, etc., but given that the impacts of ai are just extensions of human selfishness and the desire for convenience and gratification, it’s like all three of those combined, they feed each other) [play from tangent] And that is represented visually with them taking turns controlling vs being controlled by futuristic entities, or viewed through the VR set. I’m pretty sure in the interlude where Mingyu is running he turns around to look at someone controlling him, like he’s a game character. And when there is a POV shot where the watcher is wearing a headset the notification says: “Moving too fast. Content will remain hidden until you slow down” idk if that means that the tech can’t keep up with them, like they’re just too speedy to be matched, or if it’s like we as a society are moving too fast without considering the consequences here??? Idk But anyway, I get what you mean by loving the experience, but not remembering the song lmaoooo. It felt more like an art piece/conceptual than just an easy listening song, but I will be listening again lol. I always like hearing what you do or don’t like about sonic production bc that’s not usually what I’m focused on (other than obvious choices) when I’m doing initial listens to a song, so the diff perspective / expertise is fun. To me this production “felt” clean/ not muddy, but I’m not sure what that means technically. I liked this comeback a lot. And I’m glad you liked spell!! Thanks for the reaction

Honestly I’ve been hearing a lot of K-pop Yanos lately and Spell is THE ONLY ONE THAT doesn't grate me even a little. I’m sneaking it onto the Sunday Yanos playlist for when I go out with my friends. It's a negative consequence of a genre from home becoming more mainstream that you have to hear a bunch of mediocre versions/ interpretations of said genre come from different places. (I imagine Latin American Kpop fans felt similarly during the Latin Pop Kpop craze) I always think why would I listen to the Korean version of something that I hear all the time WHEN I COULD LISTEN to the original ESPECIALLY if K-pop groups are gonna just mimic accents and make the song not sound authentic…ehat is your bad African accent adding to the sonic experience? Trust SVT to deliver something that is experimental (for them) while still sounding LIKE SVT! I adore this comeback and as a Jeonghan bias I will be happy if this is that last project we get from him before he leaves.

I was definitely not surprised that "Spell" would have Amapiano instrumentals given the way Mingyu and Dino had been recommending Tyla songs in interviews 🤣. It's not a bad use of the instrumentals(I've heard worse). But as a South African I always wish that K-pop companies would use South African DJs or producers because sometimes the songs do seem to miss something even if the song is good. And with all of that Hybe money, they can afford it. I mean they don't even have to get the big guns like Maphorisa or Kabza De Small. The "Tshwala Bami" guys are literally two guys in their twenties who started doing music a few years ago and made a viral hit! It would cost them nothing to actually expand and explore cultures they are inspired by properly.

Your explanation on why you like their production was so interesting bc i feel the exact opposite way lol. I feel like with every SVT song that comes out I find the production so samey. Like I always feel like I know exactly how a Woozi and Bumzu track will turn out so tend to gravitate towards the few times at least one of them isn't on a track. Even the stacking which i tend to enjoy in recent comebacks it's like half of the group in on a vocoder and it bothers me so much.
