I have had both E-Golf and Tesla Model 3, the build quality of the Golf far exceeds the model 3 by some margin. Apart from the range and “performance” the E-Golf is a significantly better car in every way in my opinion

I love my eGolf, I won’t be buying another ICE. My favourite thing about the car is it doesn’t look like an EV. I switched from a Corsa VXR with full custom exhaust, which I will miss the sound of, but it’s amazing how your driving style changes with the type of car you’re driving. And the whine from the motor when you do put the foot down or when it switches to full regen is great, makes me think I’m driving a Formula E car.

I see corsa just brought out their new EV though. Question for me is though, an eGolf, an i3 or a Bclass E , mainly going to be using it as a 2nd car for commuting to central London, as congestion charge exempt, plus the EV parking scheme in Westminster where you can pay for just 10 mins & get parking free for the maximum allocated time

Totally agree wirh what you say. We have a Tesla MS for almost 3 years now. Love it, but since we got a e-golf for 1,5 years ago (2018 model) we only use the Telsa for longer trips. We are now thinking of getiting the new VW ID.3 1st Edition to replace the Tesla.

I absolutely get your last point, I drove an eGolf for the first time today, and I might have drained that battery a bit too fast just because that torque is something else xD I sure did give traction control it's workout. But that feeling of "oh wait, I'm at 60 mph already? When did that happen?" is absolutely worth it

I can't thank you enough! I have rarely heard anyone who drives a Tesla speak so positively about the e-Golf. I ordered mine in October and still haven't received it :/. With each passing day, doubts grow as to whether it was the right choice to choose the e-Golf, since there are now plenty more electric cars with more range. But your video gives me courage to have made the right decision! It is a great car, which - I think - is very underestimated.

I really enjoy your videos, Steve! I recently purchased a 2017 e-golf with 13,000 miles and when I got it I took my wife outside and said “ listen to how solid this sounds when you close the door!” I’ve been beyond impressed with this car in the two months I’ve had it. I get 150 miles of range on a charge, mainly because of around town driving. So solidly built and so quiet. Such an underrated and understated vehicle. Thank you for your awesome reviews and videos!

I had the eGolf here in the US, it was my gateway EV :) but a more proper comparison to a Tesla would be a Model 3/Y. I have a 2018 Model 3 and had it for 6 years now.... the MOST underrated fact about Tesla's is the: My 2018 Tesla Model 3 is a BETTER car NOW than it was new.... thanks to countless updates... for free... without hassle. My e-Golf had 2 'updates' in the 4 years I owned it, those took over 3 hours at the dealership to do and they basically were bug fixes, no new features. And the e-Golf was obsolete the moment it drove off the lot. My Tesla still does everything a new one does. (minus the external speaker... but who cares). But thanks for keeping the love of the e-golf alive! I was involved in a few e-Golf test group studies and gave them tons of feedback, sadly they didn't listen and my latest drive of an ID4 was a massive disappointment. Hoping the ID BUZZ has the bugs worked out by the time it gets Stateside this year.

Great video. I initially ordered a Model 3 some time ago to replace my Chevy Volt, but I cancelled the order in favor of an e-Golf. I've owned two other VWs in the past that I liked quite a bit, so I knew to expect the excellent build quality. The e-Golf really seems like the best bet unless someone needs more range, especially considering the price. The biggest draw to me was that the Tesla would've had a decently long wait to actually get the car, while with the e-Golf I called the dealer in the morning and drove away in the car the same evening. My only concern is that since I live in the US, getting service is a bit of a hassle. My state doesn't have any dealers that service the e-Golf, so if it ever breaks down then I'll need to get it out of state for service.

Love my e-Golf. I undertand it was a compliance car that grew into sort of an underground hit, deservedly so. They made about 150,000 of them by the time production wrapped up two weeks ago. If they had managed to increase the range a bit to 200 miles or so in the real world, I would consider it a perfect car. I do love the way they report efficiency (miles/kwh), mine was 4.4 until I switched out the stock tires for some stickier and better performing ones. I think looking back the simplicity of the e-Golf will be missed. I'm guessing that the ID.3 and ID.4 will have quite a few issues related to their complexity, software and new systems.

just got a brand new e-golf almost a month ago, and i love it. I'm quite surprised how much more range i'm able to squeeze out of it than the official figures. The official figure is 230km or 7.1 km/kwh. my record i set today driving home from work(30km.) in 18 degrees celsius with aircon on, normal driving mode and some hard accelerations where 8.7 km/kwh or almost 270km. Had the guess-o-meter say 290 after fully charging after a trip averaging 8.5 km/kWh

Thanks Steve, loved the video. Had my eGolf since Dec and still look forward to driving it every day. Did a 4 day road trip in a Model 3 recently and was shocked at how "nervous" the autopilot was...esp overtaking lorries on a sunny motorway at 70mph. Maybe the sensitivity settings were a bit off but this phantom braking made for quite a tense drive until I got use to it (hovering my foot above the accelerator pedal every time I was overtaking just in case). So for me number 8 would be the golf adaptive cruise control, which is soooo much more refined than Tesla's basic autopilot.

The reason I did not get a Tesla S nearly 7 years ago when I bought my first BEV (= fullly electric) is because in this tiny country (Netherlands), parking lots are also small; the Tesla cannot be parked in more than half the countries' parkings. At that time the rearview mirrors could not even retract. Too wide and too long (and expensive). I got an BMWi3, later an eGolf; the latter is light years ahead in driving manners vs the i3. The i3 is the name BMW not worthy: sails all over the place, while the eGolf is steadfast like on rails.

I looked at the iPace recently, BUT it is a UK car where people drive on the wrong side of the road (left instead of right), so the charging pont is also left. I have my own charging pole at home installed on the right. So I can park near the wall including the charging cabinet, get out at the left (driving position) and charge. Additionally the iPace charging is in the left front, not rear. For the iPace I would need OR a very long extension cable, OR occupy my entire parking lot at home to get out of the car and charge while visitors trip over the charging cable. I agree, that is my location at home; not applicable to everybody. But the left hand driver position in all of Europe except the UK, plus the charging point on the same side is not handy at all; for left hand driving the charging should be on the right side and vice-versa.

Great video - thanks for your thoughts Steve. I've had two VWs recently (currently own a Tiguan) and have been very pleased with their build quality and reliability. I'd REALLY like to add an e-Golf to my garage for commuting to work. BUT, I live in the humid, coastal area of Texas where reliable air conditioning is a must. Any thoughts or links to information on performance of air conditioning in the e-Golf? And impact on range? I presume the AC would perform as well as in an ICE golf, but would impact range. My commute is 25 miles total round trip - so my range requirement isn't huge - just want to know that on 95 F degree days I'll be able to stay comfortable, even if a bad traffic situation makes the trip take 40-60 minutes.

I know the Tesla would be vastly superior to the e-golf but is that fast charging something you'd be willing to struggle through once a month or so or would you stick with a petrol car (my 2016 mazda which has nothing wrong with it) until you could afford the Tesla? Thanks so much again.

It's a very good time to buy an e-Golf as they are end of life and VW dealerships are doing some great deals. If you take it easy on motorways (60 mph) you should easily do 120 miles without a recharge. I regularly do 2 trips a week to the in-laws (35 miles each way / 140 total) without a recharge in summer, I love to push the range to the limit, in the winter with rain it might get a little tight but should be do-able. Obviously recharging will depend on whether you are staying at the in-laws overnight when a trickle charge overnight will suffice or if you are coming back the same day. In the latter case fast / rapid charge as close to your destination as possible so you have enough to get back home without stopping. Ultimately its about planning your charging and trying it out. I would highly recommend getting an e-Golf for so many reasons not least is to do 150 miles it will cost about £2.25 (32 kW at £0.07 / kW night tariff at home).

Yes you’ll be fine. The pick up on the eGolf is really good. It’s not super powerful so you start to notice it doesn’t shoot off at say 70mph, but at 40-60 I think you’ll raise an eyebrow. For perspective, on a really wet smooth road, I’ve floored it at 40mph and the wheels spun a bit 😂. Enjoy the car!

I had an E Golf recently for a day, very impressive car. I was disappointed with the range though, everytime I put the heating on it would drop 30 plus miles. Very well made vehicle, super comfortable and its acceleration is amazing!

Totally agree on both points. We dont have a heat pump and I think that would help but havent tested.

We have had an e-Golf for almost 2 years, ordered new and specified the heat pump (£800 option). When you switch the heating on you loose 1 or 2 miles range and as stated in the video the GOM is very accurate in its predictions from fully charged to almost empty. I regularly get 155 - 160 miles real range from a full charge (in summer about 140 in winter). The car has now done 25,000 miles and there has been no discernible drop in the range / battery degradation. I have to say that I tend to drive it as economically as I can just to see how far I can go and have no qualms with getting home with less than 10 miles range! No anxiety at all. It's a fabulous car and costs very little to run.

The two replies (EV Steve +RJPick) are both wrong. Do not express the loss in miles (or km) but in percentage of range left. Suppose you have 20 miles left; when you then start the heating system, according to EV Steve, loosing 30 miles, your car would die then & there. Expressed in a percentage of range left would be much better. In brief: I loose approx. 10% of left-over range to maybe 15% in freezing weather. I had a BMWi3 for 3 years and now since 3 years an eGolf. The latter is vastly better in all aspects: the eGolf is by far underrated.

I have to say I think Tesla has done a great job of charging network, something other car makers like Jaguar need to get sorted. The one other concern I have with Tesla is warranty work and services as there are no Tesla dealers around N Wales.

You only look at the car in the view of the old way. The new way ist mainly the electronical, software, recharging and connectivity topic. And there Tesla is lightyears ahead!

The things that the Golf allegedly does better are so trivial.... compared to the basic things it does not have compared to the Tesla... A battery the size of a laptops with NO thermal management, slow charging no matter if it is AC or DC, NO performance what so ever, no frunk, no internet connectivity, infotainment reminiscent of a 15 year old car, not built as an EV from the ground-up, and I could go on forever. The E-Golf is very sweet and all, but it cannot hold a candle to the Tesla
