Setting up your SHIMANO baitcasting reel - VBS Braking System

Here's a quick video on how the Shimano VBS braking system works. It has gone through changes over the years but the physics behind it remains the same. I tried to get through this as quick as possible for you all!
Rod - 7' Expired MH/F
Reel - Shimano Chronarch 200E5
Line - PowerPro 40lb braid
Lure - Jackall Iobee Frog
#FishShimano

    Im a musky fisherman so im going to try and apply this and hope it works. As you may know the tension knob cranked doesnt slow down a musky bait when its dropped so im trying to calibrate this tranx 400 i have. You think backlashes are bad muskie baits weight like 8 oz , so when i backlash it wrecks my.line bait and reel! Lol

    Bought a reel like this and was shocked at how much grief casting was giving. Not new to fishing at all but relatively new to bait casters. Was almost going to shelf this reel until your video.

    The VBS is a centrifugal braking system. When you cast, the "open" brake pads slide to the ends of the pins and slow down the spool speed. The amount of braking is variable depending on the speed of the spool: the faster the spool is spinning, the more the open brake pads are forced out to the rim and slow the spool. This is why, if you have a backlash occurring EARLY in the cast, when the spool reaches maximum speed, you want to increase the number of open brake pads. The tension knob helps to limit the speed of the spool as it is slowing down, later in the cast.

    now do the cast where you swing the bait around the pole one time and swing it similar to a baseball bat(i learned it from informative fisherman he does a simple roll cast but i do that style but use full power and can bomb it.) and watch how far that thing can really go. thats crazy i always kept two on the opposite sides thinking if i only have one it will slow the spool down awkardly. and i was never able to cast it with 0. but ya i can launch it i broke my pole but i should get a new one and try just one pin. if it goes .5 more what i could do with 2 ill be amazed. i might be able to almost touch 80-100yards. with a half ounce drop shot set up... it makes me wish i could cast my spinning just as far. my first baitcasting reel i got a couple years ago but i got the old shimano bantam curado cu 200 for cheap and for the price its seriously a nice reel. i like your line counter thing i think i might have to get that too and see how far i can cast my spinning set up vs baitcaster in the future.

  • @JPDeRoseOutdoors

    It's weight of the brakes, red is lighter than green. The spool tensioner knob (under star drag) is the only adjustment you need to make for slowing down spool based on weight of the lure.

    In reference to the green and red “collars”, has anyone tried mixing them up so both the green and red collars are being used? If so, does alternating them around the spool make a difference? Green, then red, then green, etc.

  • @JPDeRoseOutdoors

    @JPDeRoseOutdoors

    You should be able to click them up the shaft to free them from the locked position. I use my nail. Just don’t go too far as you can knock it off the pin. If you do, just pull the spool out and slide it back on.

    How tight do you set your spool tension knob? I just got a couple of shimanos and set them up like my daiwas which is tension knob just tight enough to reduce side to side play in the spool but get line fluffing with the shimanos.

    On a regular reel (without DC Braking) the tensioner should be set to let the bait free fall at a controlled rate.
