I'm a 53 yr. old man who has used spinning gear my entire life. Because of your videos, I decided it was time I learned how to use a baitcaster. I bought 5 inexpensive combos, went outside and began following your instructions. That was 8 months ago now and I must say that I absolutely love baitcasters. Thanks for the help

I was in the same situation you were. Fished all my life using spinning reels. A friend suggested trying a bait caster. Bought a good one, watched some videos, then took it out with me. Conclusion: way too many backlashes. Kept using it that season but then switched back to my spinning reels. I won't ever go to a bait caster again, not even as a back-up.

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup kzread.infoUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

This is so much more complex than the 40-year-old Johnson reel I've used since childhood. With that, hold the thumb button, do a typical overhand cast, release thumb button outright at apex of cast. Done. Never had backlash on that type of reel in all 30 years I've used it. Only reason I bought one of these newfangled sci-fi reels is that's all they're selling for under $100 these days. I tried casting like I'd done for 30 years, and it took a nose dive at about 30 feet and looked like a box full of Christmas lights. Gotta say, I was pissed, took it back, and they told me everything I knew about casting doesn't apply to this kind of reel. They kept calling it a "bait caster," which makes no sense because who fishes with a rod and no bait? Anyway, the video was helpful. Guess I'm back to beginner angler until I get down the fine motor movements needed for these reels... magnets and carbon fiber in a fishing reel... seriously, this is like some sci-fi shit.

Hey, DeBo's! SHAWN here. Went out today and fished my friend's pond behind his house. Put my new Bait caster reel and ugly stick in to action. I bought a Spinning ugly stick and spinning reel combo at Wal-Mart for $36.00 for the whole combo. My friend bought me a Quantum Pulse Bait caster reel. Put it on the Spinning ugly stick rod 6'6 2 piece. I read that you can put a Bait caster reel on a spinning rod but not the other way around. Man, I am telling you after setting up the reel the way you told us too. It casted like butter! We got a bird nest a couple of on purpose just to learn how to get them undone. Worked every time. Caught 10 bass too. Please keep teaching us the way you fish. You got it down pat. The only thing is slow down a little when talking and teaching. I am 59 years old. Have a hard time keeping up. Sometimes. I have changed my rod, reel, knots and the way I have fished for years. It's been great fun this summer. Still going to fish into the late fall. Thanks again. See ya at the lakes. Shawn

Another huge tip. If you are going to get your first Bait caster, and you use a spinning reel. If you wind that spinner with your left hand then get a left handle bait caster. It isn't a left handed reel. I am right handed and want my strong arm on the rod. Plus you will have to change hands in the middle of the cast to get your weak hand back on the rod. A guy told me this when I was buying my first reel years ago. Best damn tip I ever got.

@@oxyfide It really is a personal preference but I was just tip off to this in the very beginning. Notice how many pro's are throwing right and reeling left. But you can catchum either way. You've gotten a lot of well deserved compliments...you really nailed it. I'm old enough to remember starting with level wind reels and black dacron line! I was a kid watching early 70s TV fishing shows and taking my dads old tackle (level wind reels with dacron line!) And trying to emulate what I saw. My thumb got very educated! No magnetic brakes, no spool tensioner...lol. I still use reels old Abu reels on some of my rods with no brakes...some from the 80s, but the new advanced ones are nice for sure. Really great video. Congrats again.

Thank you so much!!!! As a recently retired Audio/Video Production teacher I really appreciated 1) Finally learning how to understand my baitcast reel and the principles in play, and 2) Finally, someone who uses a quick dissolve when cutting between shots from the same angle. I've gotten so used to everyone just cutting out their extra footage/miscues and coming right back into the same shot, but it's often rather jarring to someone who is an editor and I so appreciated the smoothness of the technique that I teach and use. Heading over to Part 3 next, though I've had so many backlashes, I'm wondering if there's anything left for me to discover in this one. LOL

Good instructional series. One thing I would like to share is over spooling a reel will add to the backlash dilemma, and reduce casting distance and keep a person's head shaking wondering what is going on ? Especially when you tried every setting on a reel. So pay attention to how much line you put on a reel. I had an experience where I didn't realize I over spooled a reel just a tad too much with 50lb braid, and the line on the spool would rub against the reel seat unbeknownst to me. When I would cast, it would immediately backlash after only casting out about 20 feet. As soon as I realized this issue and took some line off, everything went a smooth as could be. Just my .02 cents.

I honestly think centrifugal brakes are better but if you are new and really worried get yourself a bass pro qualifier. That reel can teach you to become proficient in both, one or the other, and keep practicing with feathering your spool. When I first started I freaking hated magnetic brakes. But that's because I didn't understand what it was doing. An understanding for how your equipment works goes a long way.

You're gonna get a rats nest backlash no matter what and when you do guess what? You'll learn how to dig it out and get rid of it. Its not fun but a necessity. You'll also learn how it happened and hopefully just not repeat it. I think a lot of people are still intimidated and shouldn't be, a rats nest is not gonna hurt you and neither is learning so just go do it!

Excellent instructional!! Maybe it's a Hell Mary!, instead of HailMary bomb cast...ha. How many bad Amazon reviews get posted on reels because of these anglers, you wonder. Especially when you have the reel & know better. Thanks for the tip on my new Piscifun Phantom centrifugal setting. It casts REALLY smooth and far. You have to be sure not to overspool w/ line tho...not even 1/16 or it doesn't adjust at all. The right (perfect) amount & amazing. One thing I know on pulling out birdnests is keep all the tangles picked out & loose. Get 'em tight and ur done.

Went fishing today. Debo' s! Caught to big Bass on the new rod and reel combo. 4 pounder then a 5 pounder. Back to back casts. The 5 pounder is my PB. Used a Green Pumpkin Senko Texas rigged. The Ugly Stick medium heavy. Has a power tip and when the Bass hits. You really feel the bump. I dropped the tip down and cranked the 6 to 6 ratio Quantum Pulse Bait caster. Nailed both. Polmar knot held firm too. Man, It was hot 10-2-19. Come on fall. Suppose to be in the high 60's by the weekend. See ya! At the Lake's. Shawn.

After researching baitcaster vids for a while, I was inspired to apply some of it to spinning reels: I found that, much like a baitcaster, your casting digit, which is your index finger w/ a spinning reel, is still good for controlling backlash. It's usually not necessary for spinning reels, but a harder cast, or a foul cast, can be mitigated by feathering even a spinning reel's spool.
