Setting Up Your Encaustic Palette

To work with encaustic, we need a heated palette to melt our paints and medium to a workable liquid and to maintain them in their molten state while we paint. I'm going to show you how you can setup your encaustic heated palette so you can start working with encaustic.

Thank you for this tutorial. It definitely gives me some ideas. I have a large food warming buffet tray with three large vats. I use these for my clear and white encaustic medium, plus my cleaning wax. I have another smaller warming tray with an aluminium surface. That is where I mix and melt my coloured paints. I don’t have a temperature gauge for either. The buffet has a temperature dial, but the smaller warming tray has none.

Love videos thank you. I prep dry pigment into contact lense cases 2 seperate lidded areas allow 1 tesspoon pigment into each side. Easy to work with and less mess. They are about a dollar each and can be safely stored for later use. Saves fidely work with measure amongst hot wax.

I'm new to encaustic painting and have been gathering supplies for about 2 weeks now. I have an adjustable heat gun but I have noticed on other videos that lots of wax artists use a torch. Why would a torch be used in some areas and a heat gun in others? Do you use a torch? It appears to me that perhaps the torch does not move the wax around like a heat gun does, perhaps that is its advantage? I have spent so much money already I hate to buy more supplies if I won't be using them. Thank you for the DIY videos, you make it look so easy!

Damar adds durability to the encaustic medium and also raises its melting temperature. It also gives the painting a higher, more translucent sheen when buffed and helps prevent bloom (white cloud that tends to appear on the surface).

I'm new to encaustic. well I haven't started yet. first doing my research before buying the supplies. I see people are cleaning their brushes with soy wax but I thought you used slick wax to clean brushes. so is soy wax a better way of cleaning? p.s. love your videos. please keep up the awesome work.

I started with using paraffin wax to clean my brushes, palette, and paint cups until I learned I can also use soy wax. Soy wax is sustainable so it is the better choice. Sometimes though I use a mix of soy wax and paraffin wax. Soy wax feels too sleek when I'm cleaning paint cups - like using soap without rinsing with water - while paraffin feels like using very hard water. So a mixture of the two is a good compromise for me. That's just my preference though, you can totally just invest in a bag of soy wax for your cleaning wax. Slick Wax is a specific product from Enkaustikos. I have some of it as well and it kinda works like the soy/paraffin mixture. The company used to describe it as a mix of paraffin and other waxes. It's more expensive per pound compared to soy wax or paraffin wax. I show how to clean the brushes, palette, and paint cups in some of my other videos, if you're interested. I hope this helps and thanks for the kind words! :)
