Setting up the F1 Transmission - Clutch Change Part 3

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Part three of setting up the clutch for the Maserati! This is probably the most important step in the process and should be largely the same across multiple Maserati and Ferrari models!
This video is intended to increase the accessibility of these cars to more DIYers, and so take the information here as a summary of the process. It is intended to condense a lot of information into a way that makes it possible for you to follow a few steps and get a good result. There are substantial feature differences between different model cars but the underlying principles are the same.
If you would really like to get into the weeds about the relationship between the PIS, the CWI, clutch engagement and clutch life you can read the same Maserati training manual I reference at this link drive.google.com/file/d/1NPFB... . The relationships between all these factors are non-linear, will change over time, and are complex so my explanation in the video is really focusing on making the information accessible rather than covering every detail. If you're interested in properly understanding clutch setup then I recommended reading the manual in the link!

    Cool videos fella! Big hello from sunny California. I am curious what does the dbw do and why are we not able to just adjust it to our preference as you have shown without getting the dbw. Seems like you can preserve clutch and quicken Gear shifts the way you have by adjusting?

  • @ShiftMotoring

    @ShiftMotoring

    3 жыл бұрын

    The DBW is a piggy back computer for the TCU and is not a diagnostic computer. I don't know exactly how it works and it would take a fair bit of investigation to fully understand it. With that said, I believe the DBW fudges the vehicle speed and RPM to the TCU which causes the TCU to request the highest torque available through an ECU parameter called 'torque request'. You can adjust the torque request parameter in the ECU if you reflash it with a custom tune and get the same effect. I have an install and review on the DBW coming up soon. What I'm doing here is demonstrating how you can change the perceived behaviour of the transmission by adjusting clutch parameters, it would be inaccurate to describe it as making anything faster but it does change the behaviour.

    PIS is about 5 for new clutches and winds down (tighter due to degrading clutch material) towards 4.5. Car should bite eagerly and be light to move around. My car (F430) drives well at 4.7 on 11k old clutch. A lot of it is about feel. Testing the car when red hot (try engaging reverse) is another way to ensure things are good.

    Awesome content on your channel, thanks so much!! I recently had the rare opportunity to buy a 4200 Trofeo. After watching your videos on the clutch replacement, I purchased a launch 431x pro mini in the hope that I would be able to perform the clutch and ABS bleed. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work. When I scan it, the gearbox gets detected as CFC201 first and second edition, but none of the special functions seem to do anything. Not sure if I am missing something i.e. the car needs to be in a certain state (doors closed, brake engaged, gear selected, etc.,). Feels like I have tried every thinkable combination, with no luck. The ABS does not get detected at all. I am pretty much at loss on how to proceed with this, and I thought perhaps you had some ideas or inputs of what I could try. Unfortunately I have not been able to find anyone that knows anything about the Trofeo cars here in Switzerland.

    You can just bleed the brakes the old fashioned way on this, you don't need to cycle the ABS pump. You can try connecting to the Ferrari F430 gearbox settings if you're having trouble with the Maserati options. You have to be careful with that tool, it's easy to burn the TCU, it's a very common problem with it. Next time try PEGA Clutch in your Maserati.

  • @ShiftMotoring

    @ShiftMotoring

    Definitely a myth regarding burning out the TCU. There is no direct connection between scanner and the TCU, and it can only communicate via the CANBUS with the input value protected at the TCU side. If you want to send me a PEGA clutch I'll try it out and review it. I went with an OEM clutch because the PEGA clutches have negative reviews and it was too expensive for me to test and not be happy with it!

If you send me out a PEGA clutch I can test it back-to-back against a brand new OEM clutch and give an honest opinion of what I think is going on. It really is up to you whether you see any value in having someone go over your clutches in detail and comparing it against the OEM unit publicly. Of course I'll read information on forums, people share their experiences and issues so that I can learn from their mistakes instead of making my own! It is very expensive testing every possible combination so I have to choose what I focus on - this is a hobby, not a job. I purchased my new clutch from Barbagallo's parts in Perth, Western Australia, for ~$1600AUD. For me it was substantially more cost-effective to buy the OEM Valeo unit with a local parts warranty and an approachable supplier. Sorry it took so long to reply, youtube was being weird and I couldn't see all comments! The clutch is the OEM unit, the manufacturer is Valeo. I purchased it directly through Maserati/Ferrari in Australia for the equivalent of $1150USD. If I had bought a PEGA clutch I would've also had to pay import duties and shipping which would've far exceeded the cost of the new part. It was something I looked into, and I was willing to try but it was uneconomical, coupled with uncertainty over the reputation of the parts. It is good that Samrac is playing with a 360, hopefully he has a positive experience with the part and can share that experience with others! I however am not a 1m subscriber channel, I'm an enthusiast doing work on my own cars. The people who watch my videos own the same cars as me, the people who watch Samrac will likely never own a Ferrari or Maserati. If you want me to review the part for other owners, send one out and I will provide an honest review for others. Until then, the reviews that I've read are all I have to go off of.
