Servicing The CB1000R | Oil, Tyres, K&N Air Filter and More…
Ойын-сауық
With a BIG trip on the horizon, it's time for the CB1000R to get a bit of a service.
In this video I change the oil and oil filter, fit a K&N Air filter, check the chain tension, change the rear tyre, check the brake pads and generally have a good old fettle on the machines under-bits!

Motul is definitely the best oil out there imo. No doubt the semi synthetic is more than good enough for most bikes, but as mine is an old girl now, and I do use it well, I've used Motul 7100 fully synthetic twice now. It made it run a little cooler than whatever was in there when I got the bike which is nice.

Thank You for the video with great detail and information for me to maintain my CB1000R in to the future! This is only what I think:(my opinion) with regards to the K&N filters (have used it in my cars in the past), it does more to our physiological desire to believe that it is better than other filters... 1. all fuel injected system are computer controlled so by allowing more air flow does VERY LITTLE if at all as the on board ECU adjusts to what the MAS reads, 2. multiple re-use wise, yes, that is nice, but its filter fabric is gradually degrading after each wash and really NEEDs to be re-oiled properly or that can actually clog the intake system, plus you pay additional $$ for the filter cleaning solution as well as the oil etc... Aside from the K&N, I noticed you used 10W40 instead of the 10W30 oil, do you see any significant decrease in fuel mileage consumption at all? Regards & Ride Safe!

Hi Andy, great to see you working on the bike again. A couple of observations: (1) I too love my Wera Tool-check plus and its slightly bigger sibling, the Zyklop Metric Speed Ratchet Set. Both were gifted to me by my darling wife a couple of years ago, and I believe I got the inspiration from you. (2) When I first realized you can access your air filter without removing the tank as I must do, I was jealous. After witnessing your struggles, however, I think the amount of effort for both is about the same. And thanks for asking, I am doing quite well. But how the very devil are YOU?
@AndyManCam
Жыл бұрын
I too am very well thanks! Yeah it’s a rock and a hard place situation with tank off or sideways struggling! TBH i think I’d prefer tank off! This way, there’s so much pressure and pushing/pulling on all of those cables and hoses, it makes me uneasy! I don’t think Honda planned filter replacement with all the cabling in place 🤦🏻♂️ Tabletop engineering!
Looking forward to the Norway films, get editing Andy!

Honda seem to like making Air Filter changes erm "interesting". On mine you remove about 1/3 of the fairing, raise the tank then remove 9, yes NINE, screws on the airbox cover. On the Yamaha, remove the side panel (3 bolts), then the 4 screws holding the airbox cover! I've used Motul full synthetic oil on the Honda and she's now on 198,000 km. Engine's as sweet as a nut.

@AndyManCam
Жыл бұрын
On this bike I’ve found that it really doesn’t make much difference. But every bike and stand combo is obviously different.
Ha, I have the exact same set of verniers. Bought them over two decades ago when I was a bike mechanic. Running that warm up for the oil change without the muffler… the men in white coats from TÜV will be on their way shortly! With the oil filters, the heat and running of the bike makes a once hand tightened filter a near impossibility to remove by hand. Definitely worth investing in a decent oil filter wrench. As for Aussie spiders, you laugh. But I lost everything due to one of these spider incidents. Nice trick with the screwdriver for filling the oil. So, a filter wrench and a funnel is on the shopping list.😂 I’m not jealous of your air filter access. I do like my Harley for that. Haha The those inlet tubes pre-filter, they can possibly also aid in settling turbulence in the air tract.
@AndyManCam
Жыл бұрын
I got my verniers about the same time then! 20 years ago while i was at university! Fitting that i didn’t bother with the filter Wrench and now i have a bike with a cassette style oil filter! 😂. I think the funnels being before the air filter mean that anything they did do, would be ruined by the filter before getting to the intakes. Of course i could be very wrong! My assumptions are based on no experience or expertise!! 😂

Friends have always found this to be interesting considering I’m an ex Australian Superbike racer with Phillip Island being my home track. What I can’t believe is a man like yourself, who basically has a tool for everything is why don’t you have a cheap strapped option oil filter clamp and remover? May I ask you something? I did some research regarding cb1000r and read complaints about the sump paint flaking and the bad rear suspension. What do you think about it? Also, have you had a chance to ride gsx s1000. Can't decide between these two bikes
@AndyManCam
Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. Sure! The paint on the oil sump is an absolute disaster and began the poisoning of my mood for the CB1000R. Made worse only by Honda Germany‘s complete lack of interest in fixing it. After 6 months my bike looked like it had done 50,000 miles. The rear suspension was possibly the next biggest problem. I thought i could get used to it, but eventually had to spend an extra 500€ on top of the already overpriced bike to buy a shock absorber that actually belonged on it. Ultimately it was too late as the love had died. Sadly the love had the last laugh from the grave as when I sold the bike, I lost over 3000€ in depreciation in just 2 years. Otherwise, definitely go for the Honda. 😉

Hey Andy, did removing that cone from the airbox change the sound of the bike at all?
@AndyManCam
Жыл бұрын
I think maybe a tiny little bit, though it’s hard to tell if that was due to the cones or the free-flowing filter. Not enough to tear it apart just to do that tbh.

These inlet cones are often there to prevent water ingress in heavy rain and thrown up standing water. If it makes no difference better left on.
@AndyManCam
Жыл бұрын
I did consider that too Terence. Though as they face the same direction and at the same height as the intakes, i figured that they can only really be there to act like the baffles of an exhaust, except in the other direction! After Norway, i put them back in. Mainly so i wouldn’t lose them!!
BTW, there's a tool for that, (oil filter removal ) a loop strap and a bar, amazingly effective.

The crash bars? They’re from GSG, a German company. Very solid, well made, but expensive. They do work though. Both sides got tested in Norway 🤦🏻♂️

Dear Santa, please can I have an oil filter cup wrench and a funnel for Christmas. 😁 With my Honda the fluid levels need to be checked with both wheels on level ground. I e. Not on any sort of stand - not even the centre stand. It makes a considerable difference when checking the oil and water levels. Have you now over filled the oil? 🤔🤷🏼♂️ As usual, only you can make a service entertaining to watch. 👍 Oh yes. Have you now invalidated your warranty? 😬
@AndyManCam

‚Thankfully‘ my warranty is already run out! I found that with this center stand, the difference wasn’t that great from flat on the ground. Just a slightly different angle.
Any information for the bike stand please?

Aren’t you supposed to check the oil in the sight glass when it’s on it’s wheels rather than on a stand? Always seems dodgy to me as it’s a pain in the ass trying to check it without dropping the bloody thing. Maybe I’m being a balloon. Have a great trip fella.
@AndyManCam
Жыл бұрын
Ideally, yes. Though on this bike, from experience, the difference really isn’t that great. Definitely worth checking on the wheels at least once (and with an assistant’s help!) to make sure you know what you’re dealing with.
