SERIOUS 4th Gen: The Underrated Camaro?- One Take

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

TURN CC ON
The 4th gen Camaro, built from 1993 to 2002, is often overlooked for handling jobs, because the focus is always on the engines. Like every Camaro it had 2 doors, 4 seats, and could be bought with a number of engines, from 3.4L V6 to the 5.7L LS1. While the Camaro's LT1 and LT4 engines could be spruced up to make some good torque, the LS1 was the beginning of GM's legendary engine line.
However, with a wheelbase of 101" and a curb weight around 3,300lbs, this car has a lot of cornering potential that people don't know about. To learn just how much, Heidts suspension brought out their 1999 Camaro that has all the trimmings, from a built engine to full cross-members and IRS.

    @darksidedavid That's not true, if you have a WS6 or SS they actually handle rather well. I own a 02 WS6 and also a 97 miata with basic suspension mods, I haven't tracked or autocross either just very spirit driving but the only thing the Miata does better in my experience is back and forth transitions like in a quick S turn and real sharp turns like taking a 90 degree or sharper right turn onto a side street. My Trans Am actually holds more speed through a long sweeper (high way on ramp) than the Miata surprisingly. Only mods to my T/A are bilstein shocks on stock springs and hawk brake pads. Just to be clear not saying the TA handles like a miata there is certainly a weight difference you can feel but they can certainly handle and better than most expect.

  • @zerohourdrift

    @zerohourdrift

    darksidedavid so all you’re saying is that you have no idea how to drive. A 3400 pound car is NOT heavy, and it’s a rwd car with a lot of horsepower... DUH it’s gonna oversteer if you huck it into tight corners... From factory in the 90’s they pulled almost 1g on the skid pad... for a stock 90’s love axle car, that’s AMAZING. Add some proper coil overs and some adjustable arms and they’re absolute monsters. Another thing, at this point, many of these cars are 20+ years old... stock suspension bushings are probably worn out so that’s probably part of the reason you think yours drives so bad... I hate to break it to you, but if a well balanced, wishbone suspension, higher hp car “handles terrible” then there’s clearly either one of two issues. Either you’re a shit driver or the car is worn out🤷‍♂️ Mine handles great, and I have no issues at all

    I love 4th gens (had 6 of them) but considering one can buy a 4th gen for less than what this IRS costs, not including installation, Heidts is crazy. Gimme a C5 or C6 IRS conversion so that if I need a replacement part I can run down to Autozone and pick it up. Or just get Koni shocks, Strano springs and sways, a Watts link then go corner carving.

    I"ve got koni's, BMR springs and a handful of other BMR stuff with Nitto NT05 275/315 tires on my formula and the grip is enormous. My car weighs 3385 with me in it and stock power is adequate on east Tennessee mountain roads. I doubt Heidts will sell many, but I think they might have the easiest bolt in solution for IRS in an F-body. If I was looking for a pure handling car I'd probably skip an F-body for a C5 though some people prefer the F-body and those are the people this is marketed for I believe

  • @JROC734

    @JROC734

    5 жыл бұрын

    Agreed an IRS is totally unneeded on a Fbody. An IRS is the most overrated handling improving suspension component ever. Is a IRS a better design for higher handling limits than a SRA? Sure it has certain advantages, but at the same time the SLA front setup on a GEN4 is a better/superior suspension design than a strut setup that 95% of other cars are running today. Plus the big ass shock towers (yes a GEN4 uses 4 shocks instead of struts up front) to house the UCA's is why it's so tight under the hood, and also why mounting a 315 up front is no problem. My Maximum Motorsports'ed up and solid bushing IRS 03 Cobra isn't the handler my 02 SS with Koni SA shocks, BMR springs, Hellwig sways, MWC SFC's, Founders LCA's/LCA relocators/PHB. Still people like to claim that Foxbody/SN95 cars where better handling cars than GEN3 and 4 Fbodys and that is a false narrative and just not the case. And I love those platforms, have had several and still own a 88 GT and 03 Cobra. Still they are build on a much weaker chassis with a worse F/R weight distribution and a suspension design that's not even close to the suspension design of a Fbody and especially a GEN4's with its SLA front setup. Think about it the GEN4's SLA/3 link design is what most all serious SRA Mustang (even S197 cars) RR teams copy if their leagues rules allow it. About the only real redesign on the GEN4 to the suspension that's worthwhile to upgrade is to change from the PHB (which BTW isn't a bad design) to a Watts link. I mean you can use better components like LCA's, or tubular front setup, but the basic geometry is good as is. Fbodies are very good at putting power down on the exit of a turn and having the power rotate the nose around with the quickness. Some negatives are the stock seats don't offer much support for cornering and the steering wheel feels like GM took it out of a bus with its overly large diameter and thin grip. I just wish there was an easy way to use a C6 (or similar GM) steeringwheel while keeping the steeringwheel controls and the airbag. I think one reason why people who try and hate on a GEN4's handling do so because maybe they rode in a stock one or test drove one, and they realized that the car has a lot of body roll and feels kind of floaty so they claim that Fbodys suck at handling to make up for their car being slower than a Fbody. At least that's ow we use to do it when I was strickly a Ford guy to try and pick back at my Fbody friends. IMO stock GEN4's are very undersprung cars with too small of sway-bars, and unless you get a SLP car or 1LE you get the DelCrappo shocks which suck and wearout at around 30K miles and by now are worn out if someone is still running the factory DelCrappos. It almost seems like gave you the platform to build a great handling SRA car from its era, but used soft components to help prioritize ride quality more than a performance car should. A stock GEN4 rides almost as soft as Crown Vic.

  • @forcefed9

    @forcefed9

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@JROC734 I 100% agree. Get rid of the soft bushings and get some KONI shocks and these cars will surprise you. The stock 98+ brakes work well with GOOD pads and rotors. I had tubular front control arms with heims and they didn't last on the street albeit they were designed for drag use. I went back with stock arms with poly bushings with a tube k member. I still have stock sways and no subframe connectors, but I did oust all rubber from the chassis. At FBO power I noticed no loss in 60 ft. times running M/T drag radials on a 15" drag pack going to konis. although with the worn out decarbons it would almost get some light under the front left while the koni would leave flat as a pancake even with rebound all the way down and no front sway. I also want to say that I think IRS is awesome, and the ultimate when it comes to handling so I'm not knocking the heidts IRS system at all, but you don't have to do a ton to make these cars handle as is.

    I still own my 1998 Z28 with t-tops after buying it back in 2001 and it still runs as strong as the day I bought it. I got it with the rally sport package with the ground effects included, which I think made the car look a bit sharper than in it's natural stock appearance. I'll admit that in stock form, the 98 - 01 models look a bit boring. But I think the after market front grilles, pro-beam headlights, SS or Z style aftermarket hoods, rear spoilers, and ground effects can turn it into a timeless looking car, which looks nothing like a catfish. So much so that I've taken my car to car shows that I've had a few people not even realize it's a Camaro at first glance. My point being that the various aftermarket external mods can vastly improve the look of the car. Performance wise, my car still runs low 12's at the drag strip after all of these years with only adding long tube headers, an SLP exhaust, 3:90 rear end gears, Street Fighter Torque Converter, and 102 mm intake manifold and throttle body. Wish I had time and money for a head and cam package, but married with children now.

    Funny story about GM interiors in the 90s. The build quality was so poor, GMs designers started designing-in rounded corners and purposely large panel gaps to disguise that the workers refused to do a good job.

    Awesome review I love these cars 👌👏🏼. My brother ordered a brand new 97 Camaro SS back in 96 and we put 40k on it in 2 years including driving to Vancouver from Toronto and back. We have 8mm vids of coming back from the u.s. route including the last year Montana had no speed limit ! I’ve had 2 4th gens an 01 z28 stripper (no options except z rated tires which removed the speed limiter) hardtop, cloth seats and roll up windows ! Later sold that for an 02 som hardtop SS m6 I imported from Cali. Sold that car when I had my second child because a double stroller wouldn’t fit and picked up an e46 M3 (03.5). The difference in refinement was extreme.. but the sound and joys from the 4th gen were lost. True modern day muscle. Happy to see the aftermarket support the 4th gen and first I’ve heard of a bolt in irs 👏🏼👏🏼. This car may be the first piece of evidence to support the argument that in fact it may be possible to polish a turd 💩 !!

    Oh look, a Camaro you can actually SEE out of! :p The 4th gen is awesome, especially the late 4th gen Camaro from 98+ the front end looks awesome! Kind of looks like those talking clay animated cars Chevron used in some of their TV commercials, yet it also evokes the early split bumper 2nd gen and modernizes it. And the best part of the Camaro is the T-tops, which is the reason you buy a Camaro in the first place.

Nice to see the aftermarket infused new technology into these. I bet for about $35k (excluding the car) in horsepower and suspension you can have an extremely capable high power corner carver. I'd go with a built LS7 6spd. WS6 with all the latest street suspension goodies.
