Separett Tiny Toilet: 6 Month+ Review

Hey friends,
I meant to do this review at 6 months but things have been pretty busy lately. Better late than never as they say.
I got my Separate Tiny toilet from Cabin Depot in Nova Scotia. www.thecabindepot.ca

Thank you for posting this! Coincidentally, I have been looking at building a tiny house of some sort on the back part of my parents property, as they are getting older, and need someone around quite more often. The area where I could do this is too far away from the septic system and would require a lot more money and effort to connect where I want to build to the septic system so I have been considering a compost toilet, but I don’t know anything about them. But now that I’ve seen your video I feel much better about them and how they work and will definitely see if I can look into the one that you have here in the the US! 😊

IMO, she could easily replace half the charisma-challenged clowns currently clogging up/representing HGTV. If she can get a bunch of people to click to hear about a (non-flushing) toilet for 20 minutes…the sky’s the limit, and I’d tune in to watch her talk about anything! 😳😊 one of the better KZreadrs, for sure. ☺️🐻

Thank you for doing this review. I was wondering how it was going and if you like your Tiny Separate Toilet. That is what I want in my Tiny Home also once I get it built. I have always heard great things about them. Hearing your review makes me positive on which toilet I want. I think it is so wasteful of our water supply flushing it all the time. We all should be more mindful of our consumption of our natural resources. There is no reason why we can't be thoughtful and caring individuals of what we consume and how we use or dispose of things. I have been gradually changing things in my household such as changing from plastics to glass when I can, soaps, and cleaners to more biodegradable safe for our environment and such. There is too many plastics and chemicals going around this world of ours. I just wished more people we stop and realize what they are doing to our beautiful planet. Anyway, Thank you again for your great review. I love when you share these things with all of us. You are amazing and I hope you find your new home soon. I am so sorry some people have to be so selfish and unkind to cause someone to have to uproot and find a new place to live especially when they are not causing any trouble to anyone. Have a very blessed day.

I like the look of this model rather than some others I have seen in camper van videos. Although it still uses a bag for solids, it is much less waste than a “dry flush” toilets, which I would never buy. I read about “sawdust” toilet systems and it seems too difficult to maintain the right balance to break down the waste properly - I am not that great with yard compost breaking down quickly and this would be even more tricky I think. Thanks for explaining how your system works, the detail is appreciated.

Thanks! Things have changed in the last 50 years. The farm my mother bought at that time had no water to the house and certainly never had septic it had it outhouse. She got the water in the which was an expense so the septic was not in the realm of things. She had seen in a camping and RV center of gas toilet. And that's what she put into farmhouse. She later had my daughter and her husband take over the the house. And it is now up to code with a washing toilet.

The only thing I would worry about is accidentally getting water in the back part. I use a small squeeze bottle as a bidet for #1. Saves me a lot of toilet paper, but I'm not sure I could completely avoid squirting the water a bit too far, y'know what I mean? 😊

I was considering the one you have but wasn’t sure how I would dispose of the liquids as I’m not on a septic. I also pee a lot so wasn’t sure how often I would have to empty the liquid tank either. The solid container looks considerably smaller than the solid bucket on the regular Separett. Do you know what the capacity of yours is? I really enjoy the waterless toilets and would never go back. if you gonna dilute the urine before disposal anyway so why not just pour a small cup of water onto the urine section to cleanse it after every use

Hi there, we have the same toilet, just got it installed in our van and have an issue with the flaps closing also. Just wondering how you knew what the issue with that was and what I should say to the company to get it replaced?

Hi! Well mine would stay stuck wide open most of the time and if they did close there was a gap of several inches. There's supposed to be a small gap to allow air in. I talked to the supplier and sent them photos and a video. They weren't very responsive but I just kept at it until they finally sent me a new cover piece (the part with the flaps). Ironically, I never had to replace it because I didn't get to changing it out right away and it started working properly🤷🏻‍♀️. I'm glad I have that replacement piece though.

Adelina, I was so angry, on your behalf, at your having to uproot again and find another parking spot for Serendipity. I am looking forward to hearing about this new spot you have alluded to - hoping everything works out. It is my dream to purchase my own tiny home to retire to one day, but it is currently illegal to live in a tiny home in Ontario unless you build it as a second dwelling on property uou yourself own (misses the point entirely, in my opinion). I am hoping that as tiny homes become more popular, bylaws all over Canada will start to change. Shame on the bylaw people where you live for not wanting to work with you. You took the mystery out of composting toilets with this video. Thank you. Made me want to replace my flushable toilet! I have one question. Maybe I missed it in your video. Where and how do you dispose of the liquid waste? Wishing you the best over the next month and a half. Looking forward to your next video😊!

How do you toss toilet paper in the hole? You have to simultaneously press down the seat to keep the flap open, so you can throw the toilet paper? That seems more inconvenient than a manually operated flap that stays open without having to press down on the seat.

The same way I do on a regular flush toilet. I don't used to have to stand to dispose of the paper. It's really not a big deal and in my mind worth it because of the water savings.

My concern is if you somehow miss the poop hole. Like, it hits the edge, or you stand up to find a log laying half in the hole and half in the pee area, or explosive diarrhea all over the edge of the poop hole and basically all over the place. Do these things happen?

LOL! Lots of things can happen if you're not paying attention. But you get used to things. I don't even think about it now. And I'm spraying and wiping it down each time so things stay very clean. It's really not a big deal.

Might have to save up for one of those for my van! 🚽 For my first van I bought a dri-flush toilet, which works like a diaper genie, but it wasn’t environmentally friendly, so I sold it. In my second van I use the toilet, but don’t use the black tank.I have been using compostable bags in the bowl with pet bedding pellets, but of course that doesn’t separate the liquids and solids, so it’s not ideal either. 🚐🇨🇦❤
