As a man in my 30's, in Law Enforcement, and a general "man's man" Drinking beers, loud rock music, fast cars, etc.... this song, whenever it comes on or I hear it, stops me dead in my tracks. I usually end up reflecting and tearing. This is one of those songs a friend would go "So, who is she?" We all have that "one that got away". Truly a beautiful and classic song destined never to be topped. A miracle how 4:23 worth of music and lyrics can make a grown man tear and smile at once.

Until today I had only heard the Phil Collins version of this song. I didn't know Stephen Bishop wrote it, nor indeed that he got an Academy Nomination for it (although he didn't win) It was ALWAYS the lyrics that got me with this song - and now, knowing that it's yet another stunning Stephen Bishop creation - I'm going - BUT OF COURSE - duh.

It's widely known the woman Bish is singing about is actress Karen Allen, who had been his girlfriend. He always said he writes better songs when he's depressed. When he sings about "someday looking in your eyes" just imagine her eyes . When I hear this song now, I wonder if he ever had the chance to look again in her eyes.

How can someone make a comment so cruel about Stephen Bishop? The interpretation of Phil Collins in Separate Lives is phenomenal and would not have been possible if not for Mr. Bishop, because Bishop is the author of this masterpiece. By the way,Bishop`s performance in Separate Lives is also excellent.

@amtrak207 Kind of a straight, silent shot to the heart, isn't it? No matter how often I listen to this one, the power of evoked emotion always catches me off guard. One ot those songs that slams into your heart, and you whisper "thank you" as you lie there bleeding.

Yes. (sorry for the late reply all). This song always hits hard. Those critical words "Someday... I might... Find myself... Looking in your eyes... But for now... We'll go on living... Separate lives." followed by the piano closeout still has the power to move Mt. Rainier. Sheer brilliance. These aren't lyrics but a work of art (coming from a man who probably just played AC/DC.). We all have been there. You're right, some wounds just aren't meant to heal.

This song have the same effect as Gordon Lightfoot's "if you could read my mind". Women at many times don't seem to understand the pain when they do hurt Men emotionally. To a woman, they can get men as if they're a bunch of clothing at a store. But to a guy being torn by heartbreak, its devastating!

Kinda sucks to hear the floor creaking and things shifting offstage in quiet sections where you should be able to hear nothing but a pin drop with the audience spellbound frozen and breathless. I remember watching him play this song with just his guitar on some daytime talk show in the 1980's. I know you could have heard a pin drop in my living room that day during the quiet moments of the song.
