Separate Game, Music, Discord Audio In OBS

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Setting up audio for new streamers is complicated, and confusing, but after hours of work, your mic sounds great, your game is clear, and music, well it’s amazing, you’ve done it!... except your viewers keep screaming at you to fix your audio.
Today, we’re going to be setting up a tool called Sonar For Streamers, that works with OBS or Streamlabs to route your different audio sources carefully into different channels, and then into OBS, allowing you to have much better control over your audio. I am also going to show you how to set up your OBS recordings to have separate audio tracks for your game, music, discord, and microphone audio in OBS.

What are Virtual Audio Channels?
If you’re a beginner think of it like this, when you plug a microphone into your Computer, you get a Microphone Source that you can add to OBS, and if you plug a second Mic in, you get a second microphone source to add as well. Two different sources, two different mics.
Sonar creates new virtual audio sources on your computer, like adding a microphone, but rather than sending your voice to that source, you’re sending your computer programs that create audio, so your games, spotify, google chrome, you name it.
How To Add Global Audio Sources To OBS
Open OBS, Click Settings, go to Audio, and select your microphone.
I want you to remove your mic, and all your other captures, set them to disabled, and instead just add SteelSeries Sonar - Stream to Mic/Aux Audio 1, from there, click apply, and you’ll see this single audio level at the bottom.

To truly make your microphone sound amazing, you’re going to want to learn to use filters in your broadcast software. Now all three of these filters exist in slobs and obs, I’d recommend using them almost all the time, They are Noise Suppression, A limiter, and a Noise gate.
The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

Really helpful tips bro! I have a question though. I tried playing a game, but the sound was rerouted to Media instead of Gaming and I cannot change that. Would that be a problem for the stream or recording?

This has worked great besides one issue. This only happens when I try to play call of duty. I have everything set up just as you showed and whenever I load up COD it automatically gets loaded into the MIC channel and for whatever reason it wont allow me to manually move the COD app to the GAME channel. Do you know of a fix for this or why it would be occurring?

Thank you for all the great info! I'm not great with this kind of stuff, so this might be a nonsense thing to say, but you mentioned there being lag when trying to monitor your mic by adding it to the personal mix. I noticed that there's a button underneath the Master sliders, next to the mute button for the stream slider. It looks like an ear, and when you hover over it, it says, "Listen to what your audience hears". I clicked that and was able to hear myself, and there wasn't any lag. (To be exact, there was maybe a split second difference between me saying something and me hearing it, but I only noticed when specifically listening for it.) I don't know if that's the same function you're referring to when talking about monitoring lag, or if that's something that's helpful. It was helpful for me while not streaming to be able to make some adjustments; I had Spotify and this video playing, and used those in place of game audio to fiddle with the mic settings. Hopefully it helps someone else, too! (If I'm totally off-base, please disregard. Like I said, I'm trash when it comes to audio tech/mixing/etc.) Here's a link to a screenshot of the button, in case that helps too: photos.app.goo.gl/Rh4c9yiT9nxgehof6

3 issues I'm having with this, 1. Recording still puts everything into 1 file and it does not separate when put into my editing software. Is this only possible with something like Adobe? Bc I use Shotcut and it all stays on 1 track. I also use Streamlabs for the recording as well. 2. I have the mic set to the highest it can go on the sliders in Sonar and Streamlabs but it's still very quiet. It was fine volume-wise before I set up Sonar. Even adding on Gain filters in Streamlabs doesn't help much at all. 3. This one's not as pressing, but I can no longer adjust the audio on my computer as a whole. Like doing the Fn+volume buttons doesn't change the volume. It's always at 100. It doesn't sound like it's at 100, so it's not too important rn, but it is weird that it does that.

I want to do a static long-running minimally-attended-by-me livestream (similar to 3d print streams). Question: If I am playing a multiplayer game that uses TeamSpeak, for example, I am guessing I would route TeamSpeak Audio to the Sonar "Chat," then add another audio device in OBS. Currently in OBS Audio Settings, under global devices, under Mic/Aux Audio 3, I click on the drop down menu and don't see SteelSeries Sonar - Chat as an option (but I assume that's because I haven't routed TeamSpeak to Sonar yet). • @StreamScheme

Streamlabs does that natively, but OBS it’s more difficult, the plugins for it don’t actually work great so instead I recommend just making overlays more minimal, odds are if it’s too much for an edit, it’s likely a bit over the top for a stream. And if your alerts are smaller, but their audio is on their own track, you can delete the audio and let the alert be less invasive

I’ve just copied these settings and wow it’s made such a huge difference to my mic quality during recordings! I’ve just noticed however that when I am in a chat with a friend on steam and recording my gameplay my audio from my mic sounds really good and I can hear random other players mics but my friends mic is completely off. I can hear him during the game etc but he’s completely muted during the recordings? Any thoughts on why this is happening??

In the Advanced Audio Properties, would the Twitch VOD track (for example #6) need to be checked to gaming and microphone only or would it only go to Stream mix only or would it go to all three?

If you hadn't found the answer I believe you set "Media" to the audio track and the VOD track should be set on your "Stream Mix" if using the guide step by step here.

I have Sonar since I got my Steelseries headset (love it btw). But I'm not sure I it can help me since my game audio and game chat are coming into OBS via my Elgato HD 60S+. I do have my mic to the stream separate so I can control that (though not in my stream recording...I should be able to do that in OBS and I haven't yet because I'm busy and lazy when I'm not busy lol). I do run into audio issues where I;m told my game chat isn't loud enough or the game is too loud vs game chat, but because I'm not a PC streamer I don't know if Sonar can work with that. Maybe I'm off base?

This is a pain in the back. I set it up exactly how you described and since then all my videos are constatly muted. I have gone in and tried to change things but honestly at this point I have no clue what I am doing. I just wanted my mic on a channel, game on a channel and thats about it. I dont do anything else with it so confused whe I can not get it to work. It also seems every time I switch to a different layout then I have to redo everything.

I don't know if it is due to an update or something else, but I set up my audio exactly as it is in the video. However, at a later date, when watching through a random part of a VOD, I noticed there was no sound whatsoever. I discovered that it was due to the wrong audio track being selected on the "Twitch VOD Track" section that is under the Settings -> Output -> Advanced -> Streaming section. However, this setting doesn't appear on your video and I can only select one track to play on the VODs. Which means all audio or no audio. Please help

I might have to give this a go, I tried Rode unify after I brought one of their microphones and was looking for something better. Unify would randomly crash my PC and it would never save my slider settings.

Great video, this was extremely helpful! I am having trouble with getting the audio separated on my editing software though as it still comes up as one audio. I am using streamlabs so idk if this feature is only on OBS

Idk which editing software you have but I use Wondershare filmora to separate the audio on that is- Add the video to the project Click the plus then click detach audio Delete the video part Right click the video Go to audio track Click on the second one (first one was the one you just detached from the video already) And do that for each of them some will have sound some won’t. Maybe your editing software can do something similar. Now I’m not 100% positive that steelseries is what helps separate the audio for recordings but it might, so keep it especially for streaming.

I've been streaming for few months now. In my case I went with a hardware solution. This allows for live monitoring with no delay. Partially this is due to experience with sound engineering and music production. All my audio is mixed for stream output via a Soundcraft signature 12MTK. What I am struggling with is multitrack OBS recording. I've set it up on individual tracks as outlined in the video . The problem is when I drag it into my editing software, it only displays the main mix that went out to stream. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If I have the voicemod program as well that I use, would I set that virtual mic as the SteelSeries mic input? Can I use these two programs together?

THANK YOU. Damn I was suffering with the instructions from SteeSeries itself. My issue? Where you choose your output audio device, stream audio device, and mic input device, I was setting the stream audio device as my headphones as well, and wasn't managing to get sound into OBS like that.

Thanks for the video mate. Is it maybe possible to create an audio track for each Discord friend? Then I could with that, disable that friends audio-track if he/she are one day not in the mood for being recorded.

Not for each discord friend but for discord individually yes. If they don’t want to be recorded, then don’t record or they leave.

In OBS Output Streaming, right under "Audio Track" I have "Twitch VOD Track" with 1-6 being selectable similar to "Audio Track", should I have that enabled and if so which track? Didn't see that in your settings. Great vid and explanation, thanks!

depens on what you want to keep in the twitch VOD, if you want the same as you are streaming, then track 1, but if for example you have music with copyright in the background during the streaming but you don't want that music in the twitch VOD (you could get banned), then select only the tracks with your game and microphone.

Will this cause any desync issues with the audio in OBS? With application audio capture beta, I've had my game audio slowly get desync'd as time went on until I would reset it agian. Looking for a solution that stops any issue like this from happening, so I can have a more seamless stream!
