You can make the horizontal split more robust by using two columns for your first "column," then merging their cells below the first line.

Neither of those methods “split the cell”. They’re just visual. Which is OK, but the value of the cell is not necessarily useful. Another useful method is to type the column label description and add a right arrow (from the symbols menu) and then a line break and then the rows label followed by a down arrow symbol. Looks good. No special cell formatting required.
