Liverpool’s drop-off last season was huge, they missed out on Champions League football and finished 22 points behind eventual champions Man City. In order for them to make up the difference they need to rebuild their squad, but they have a tight budget. So who could they bring in?
JJ Bull has some suggestions.

Robertson was unbelievable for Scotland in the June internationals. He’s been insanely consistent for years. He’s still one of the best left backs itw, but I feel he’s suffered at Liverpool since Wijnaldum, then Mane, left. That left side was unreal, and symbiotic. As good as the players coming in have been, there have been so many disruptions around him. Insanely top tier, consistent, record breaking assists defender, but everyone needs consistency around them.

If Liverpool sign Pavard and move Trent in the right 8 position, this would mean that Robertson is free to roam the left side and join every attack, while still maintaining the 3 CBs in Van Djik, Konaté and Pavard.

As a Gladbach supporter I would miss Kone a lot. The stats in itself don't do him justice. That's because for the most part of the season he was the only one in our midfield that showed some sort of aggressive play. Our squad is atrocious in that area (ranked last in won duels, won aerial duels and intensive runs, ranked 2nd to last in sprints and distance covered).

You’re right, when we started to play Trent and fab as the double pivot, Salah had to come wide to hold the width. Which meant hendo was the “number 10” on that side and carrying that attacking burden. There was this one game I can’t remember which when Curtis and Harvey started alongside Fabinho and that was the best I remember the new system looking with Harvey and Curtis sometimes holding the width allowing Mo and Diaz to come central and other times, they’d come inside. I think long-term it's better to get Trent into the 8 role as opposed to having him as a pivot in the Pep style since when Stones does it he can move back into that CB role when a defender is forced wide but in this system Trent can't do that so Konate is forced to play CB and RB which isn't sustainable and just leaves too much space that good teams will take advantage of. Plus Trent in the 8 in the more traditional role will let Robbo be free again instead of having to stay back in that back 3

@@LuisTheG1 The games missed isnt everything, you've got to account for the days missed as well as the total amount of injuries. At Gladbach he's missed ~140 days across 7 injuries, it just so happens that he's got ''lucky'' with the timing of some of those injuries. But still, missing 140 days can easily be 20 games if you count only 1 game per week, now consider all the weeks where they play twice or even three times, it would add up to Keita/Thiago levels of games missed.

For the other mid option which could be slightly more attacking getting the rumoured szoboszlai would just be an ideal signing, adding a player of his style would be improving liverpool at what we are good at which is attacking. The thing about adding Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Thuram, or even Kone, is that all of them are more press resistant and technical than previous Liverpool midfield's were. Adding that level of technical quality, plus size and strength (Thuram, Szobo, Kone), will allow them to retain the ball and control tempo WAY more (which is what Klopp bought Thiago for, tempo control) which should reduce the gaps and distances between players because they won't be chasing as much, nor will they be relying on long diagonals for offense. The build up might be slow initially, but one all of them settle in everybody will benefit from more control, which conserves more energy, which makes heavy metal football viable again.

But hipothetical line-ups only with technical players not that good at pressing wouldn't work. Mac Allister, Trent, Thiago are great at controlling the game, but wouldn't make a viable pressing midfield. It's one or the other. What this midfield seema to lack is an energetic pressing machine.

Doesn't Kelleher count as homegrown too? He joined Liverpool in 2015, when he was 16, turning 17, so he's made the 3 years prior to 21. Based on current squad: Kelleher, Gomez, Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Henderson, Elliot, Jones, Carvalho, all qualify. While the lads under 21 don't have to be in the 25 man squad to play, they can be registered, and count towards the 8 man total. Additionally, I think Stefan Bajcetic counts his 3 years this season as well (again, U21 but can be used in the list if needed). With the loss of Ox and Milner, likely sale of Phillips, and loan of Carvalho, it would seem plausible we're more likely to bring in 2-3 senior home grown players for the quota. James Ward-Prowse would be a starting point. He offers a number of things, including leadership, energy, great distribution. And, with him and Trent, we'd have 2 of the best dead ball specialists in the game. Romeo Lavia also looks like he qualifies for home grown status next season, and would be a great understudy to Fabs. Plus, adding those two just keeps the jokes about us only buying from Soton going...

@@jonarific8504 that's my point really. I do appreciate how much more work it must be to do the smaller sides, because the pool of "not at all world class but probably good enough for a bottom half prem side if they're used in the right way" is much larger, and it's harder to find players that will solve specific problems in those sides when not only is the pool of "unspectacular but good enough for this team" players so much bigger, but there's all the budgetary issues to consider to boot. It just seems like given how many FM fans are on the staff at Tifo, they would also enjoy trying to solve those problems, and so it feels a bit disappointing that they're only doing teams who would probably finish in a similar position to last season even without any signings (or in Chelsea's case basically guaranteed to be back in the top 6 even if they only off-loaded 10-15 and didn't replace any)

Please have a look at the amount of times VVD actually passes forward, he almost always leaves it up to the right centre back to do this. It works when Matip is playing but not as well with the other options. If he was encouraged to play forward more often or even replaced with a player that did it would help LFC not be quite as one dimensional. I have loved what VVD has done but he showed worrying signs of decline post injury. I have wondered if it was due to the reduced coverage in midfield which you covered. Thank you for the excellent analysis.

The idea that Liverpool played most of the 21/22 season with Bobby F as a False-Nine is... well, false. From Jan 2022 onwards, when they went on that long, virtually unbeaten run that got them in contention for the Quadruple, Mane played mostly as an out-and-out Number Nine, with Diaz operating on the left.

I think Livramento is a good option tbf. Cheaper than both Pavard and Colwill whilst also being very promising and would fill a homegrown spot. Yeah he’s had a big injury but before that he was on track to be a top fullback. Only downside is he doesn’t have any experience at CB.

  • @jplb96

Pavard is bang average and it's the left side that is the main concern. Robertson is not a LCB in buildup and has been ran into the ground. Liverpool need a centre back/left back hybrid but started at left back. Hincapie is a good pick, Inacio, etc.

I would like to see Liverpool play a variation of the 4231 as I think it fits their strengths and covers their weaknesses. Their defensive shape would be: Alisson Pavard-Konate-VVD-Robertson TAA-Fabinho Salah-MacAllister-Diaz Nunez This system removes some of the defensive responsibility for TAA and still allows Robertson the freedom to push forward. TAA would be able to receive the ball deep and distribute but would also have the cover behind to push wide and deliver crosses. When attacking it would be: Alisson Pavard-Konate-VVD TAA-Fabinho Salah-MacAllister-Nunez-Diaz-Robertson In periods of sustained intense pressure or against weaker opposition, TAA could shift into an even more attacking position giving: Alisson Pavard-Konate-VVD Fabinho TAA-Salah-MacAllister-Nunez-Diaz-Robertson TAA and Robertson would stay very wide so even overhit crosses could be recovered. Nunez provides the main aerial threat whilst Salah, MacAllister and Diaz look to find pockets of space. If there is a turnover, Fabinho would be able to engage aggressively knowing that there are still three defenders behind him. Someone like Manu Kone, maybe Thuram or Bajcetic could fill this role. The nearest CB could engage the attacker to win the ball back or delay them whilst the other two drop off to follow runners, block passing lanes and allow some of the attackers to drop back. It makes marking TAA very difficult as he can stay deep where the opposition may man-mark him with a 10 or an 8 but they would then have to follow him out wide which frees up space for Salah and MacAllister. I also think that where I have Pavard here is the best position for Gomez. Physically and technically (when fit), Gomez is excellent but his positioning can be iffy and he does sometimes switch off. Having two other solid defenders next to him would help to mask these weaknesses.

have not been watching a lot liverpool games but I don't think these are their sensible transfers : there is no team that can play without any player in the wings, especially attacking teams. it's too easy to defend against. For liverpool, Klopp needs definitely to bring back Salah more centrally in the right half space, because he needs his goal scoring abilities and creativity in the tight spaces. This means TAA have to take the right wing. Wich means if the team plays in 4-3-3 having a more defensive, good passer, not too slow right interior to cover TAA and distribute. That's why Handerson was so effective. Vitinha, Youssouf Fofana, De Paul, , may be Tielemans would be good options.

Its not an excuse for a club of Liverpool's size but injuries and age really hurt them last season, and the new young crop of players haven't achieved lift off yet. Depth, moving on some young players, and finding depth in the "engine room" (midfield) will hopefully change Liverpool around.

when we had injuries a few seasons ago it was clearly bad because they were all defenders. It was easy for people to understand when we had 17yo cbs starting PL games. Last season, it was less clear, but injuries just obliterated the way we play and Klopp was left searching for a solution. I'm glad we have a manager whos willing to roll the dice when things are not working but it makes it easy for people to criticise when it doesnt work. If we get Dom in I'd honestly say that CBs become priority. JJ's suggestions here would be incredible at CB.
