Sensible Secondhand Reviews: 2011 Skoda Roomster 1.2 TSI SE DSG - Lloyd Vehicle Consulting

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews, the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time we test a rather sensible 2011 Skoda Roomster 1.2 TSI SE DSG and drive near an airport, point out ridiculous practicality, get confused about chain cam and cambelt engines, try not to fall over a microphone lead and wish for cruise control and a higher trim level. Nothing untoward, then!

Congratulations on 3k subs Mr Lloyd very well deserved. I’m on my second Roomster exactly the same as your reviews done and in silver. Best car I’ve ever had. Managed to get three beehives in the rear with the seats removed. The only gripe I have is that the parcel shelf doesn’t cover the whole boot, and I have to use a blanket to bridge the small gap. These have a chain driven cambelt so no belt to worry about replacing every 5yrs. Please keep up the good work.

Thanks ever so much indeed, Malcolm! I completely understand why you like these cars. I would need a higher specification myself, but this would probably be fine for a lot of people. I could see from Liz's car that the parcel shelf''s lack of coverage would be a bit of a problem with the seats in quite a number of configurations!

Great stuff sir. Takes me back to my car sales days when I had 2 of them as demonstrators. As per the name, the space was incredible, they held the road surprisingly well and I happily took them from Perth to London and back on holiday. You can see how the Yeti evolved from the Roomster too. I know Mr Coleman will disagree but I love a Skoda. Totally unpretentious, solidly built and controls exactly where you want them. Joyous!

Mr Coleman and I actually spoke about the Roomster today. He doesn't actually think that they are that bad! The control placements are absolutely amazing. They actually do drive and handle quite well, the slightly wider rear track seems to give good stability. Very easy to drive, especially with the DSG gearbox. A nice sensible review, thanks! That particular engine (1.3 - 4 cylinder 105hp turbo) does have a chain only rather than a belt. I agree about cruise control. I'm about to buy a 2012 for my daughter in SR trim and I will be adding this for her. You can retro-fit cruise control on most VAG cars provided the original spec is high enough (which SR should be) Some very basic models might need an upgrade of one of the electronic 'boxes'. To add cruise control requires new indicator and wiper stalks, a new loom and some reprogramming. The loom for the Roomster is no longer available from Skoda but it should be found elsewhere with persistence. The parts come to about £180.

Yes, it has been a long time since I filmed this. I may be able to have a go in a manual one soon, actually. The later ones have a different 1.2 engine from memory. It is good that, if you are quite determined, you can add cruise control to the higher specification versions if you like.

Yes, a strange specification on this particular car, I would prefer the SE Plus, I think. That would make the interior a bit nicer! The 1.2 TSI continued until about 2017, they may have changed the design of it in 2015 for Euro VI, as you say. Thanks again for watching, sir!

Sensible, practical, versatile. Probably an excellent buy..... .... but I’ve never been able to get over the looks. It looks like Homer Simpson designed it. But I suspect it is a marmite car. I have always thought all VW group engines were belt driven and had to be changed every.... 4 years?

Thank you, sir! Yes, styling not to everyone's taste, maybe just buy a normal Fabia? Not all Volkswagen engines have cambelts. Later research suggest this has a chain engine, as did the earlier 1.4 normally aspirated petrol in the pre-facelift Roomsters.

@@colinhicks4174 , you are absolutely right! They modified the 1.4 TSI of this type to take a cambelt for Euro VI emissions regulations. The engine we had in our Toledo definitely had the famous "wet" timing belt!

@@lloydvehicleconsulting I am a newbie, kinda sorta. I bought my Automatic diesel c4 grand picasso 2008 in 2013 and like the the economy of diesel. I found my car quiet and very comfortable as tall, rotund man. I find more modern cars cramped and uncomfortable. I use my car, rather like a van, but it is now too expensive to fix. 2nd hand prices for automatic cars that fit me, and my needs are both uncommon and expensive
