Sensei Craig Jones Teaches Disciple Jozef Chen in Ways of Guard Passing & Top Pressure

Ойын-сауық

Merch out now! bteamjj.shop / Submeta: submeta.io/@bteam | Imagine: it's 8:00am, you walk onto the mats at B-Team trying to figure out that guard pass you were thinking about all night. You drill it a few times to see what happens, when Craig Jones walks by, stops and flicks his cigarette in your face. He tells you you're doing it wrong before pinning you to the mat and forcefully contorting your limbs while simultaneously compressing your lungs. This is good, you think. This is how you learn, you tell yourself. Just think of how many people would die to be in this position right now. Before you know it the blackness creeps in and you awake to a wheezing cackle in your ears. You just felt the top pressure of a real Australian bull. You'll never be the same again.

If you watch closely you see Craigs true nature come out in the last seconds of adjusting and sinking in a choke. The eyes goes blank.. dolls eyes and a tense strange face, the soul of a shark in a mans body, a face perhaps similar to one of a serial killer in the act, all senses directed inwards to fully enjoy the pleasurable tactile sense of squeezing the life out of something.

Craig so structurally sound from every position. No wasted movement. So sick to watch. Torso stays parallel to the mat, low center of gravity. Smashy smashy.

After seeing this, I’m starting to believe the top position is evolving to a point where bottom is no longer a neutral position granted both fighters are equal in skill level Edit: I understand both sides completely. Clearly someone like Gordon could beat anyone from bottom position. There's definitely value in training bottom position. Giving oneself more defensive capabilities and submission threat from bottom breeds offensive confidence through risk perception. Perhaps my comment, looking back at it, could've been worded better towards tactics and the purpose of the guard. For the longest time we've been taught that pulling guard is considered a neutral start for the athlete. This has been proven true to the many great jiu-jitsu athletes that were successful as guard players/pullers primarily, which at the time were okay with accepting bottom. However, as John Danaher stated, one of the fundamental weaknesses of jiu-jitsu at the time was the standing position. As he noted before, leg locks were once a weakness in the sport and have now become a fundamental threat in everyone's guard game. Perhaps my hypothesis, was that pulling guard or accepting bottom position was a notion accepted before due to the lack of development in the standing position of the sport, and now with it's evolution, perhaps accepting bottom position against an equal and formidable opponent is no longer a tactically neutral way to start a match or position to concede. Perhaps in perfect jiu-jitsu between two elite athletes, the guard serves as the middlegame for when two athletes stand fighting for top, and one is inevitably taken down. The guard is a tool to be used by an athlete if put in an inferior position in his efforts to fight for top. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if Gordon had to fight his clone, he'd prefer to be on top if fighting himself lol
