Sennheiser MK4 vs Neumann TLM 103 - Condenser Mics Shootout on Guitar - Want 2 Check
In this video, we record electric guitar with two condenser microphones: the Sennheiser MK4 and the Neumann TLM 103. Both mics are placed at the same distance from the cab and are equidistant from the middle of the speaker. They both record the same performance at the same time.
Here's our setup:
Fender Telecaster -- DV Mark GH250 -- DV Mark Neoclassic 112 -- One of the two mics -- Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 -- Cubase
No EQ or processing is done on the tracks.
Shortcuts:
TLM103: 0:20, 0:43, 1:18, 1:44, 2:10
MK 4: 0:31, 1:01, 1:31, 1:57, 2:25

Preferred the TLM103 but if those mid and high-mid bumps were EQ'd a bit on the MK4 it would get close enough I'm sure.

curious how you'd rate the tlm107?
103 sounded better to me on the clean guitar, while I preferred the MK4 with distortion on.
Surprisingly, I found the MK4 to be a little brighter. I'm certain though, that for this application, small eq & compression tweaks would make them pretty much the same. I preferred the TLM103 in this comparison.

What about voice?!!
So good! Sennheiser lost ZERO bits of quality putting out a Neumann quality mic with the Sennheiser name on it (Sennheiser owns Neumann since ‘91). This video will save me $600 🤙🏼

Do you think the capsule on the Mk4 is the same as the capsule on the TLM103 ? or similar at least ?

@@John-bw2vr There's a German guy with a vid nearby who tests them with results extremely similar to this guy's--when he mentions with a slight smile that both mics are both finished in the building, I wondered what parts they might share.

TLM 103 sounds better to my ears.. atleast 20% better than mk4, more rich soothing sound.. now if that worth spending nearly 4 times is a question.

Tune up that guitar! Otherwise nice
