We use Triad-Orbit stands for our videos exclusively: tho.mn/triad
What's on the market for under 500 bucks? Large diaphragm condensers are often a go-to choice for every vocal recording in the studio. Javier from our studio department grabbed himself the 5 most wanted candidates and compared them to eachother. Including Oscar from the guitar department on vocals!

I like Mk4 by far the most because of its "round tone". I think it well be more easy for mixing the vocals because its less harsh than the other mics in the test.

As every time there is any reasonably well controlled test of decent microphones, the differences are so slight, you could easily compensate for any of these mics with less than 3db of eq in any given spot. We are spoiled for choice today. Pretty much anything above $200 is going to be great. The only reason to drop $5,000 on a microphone these days is for show.

    for nuance.

  • 3 жыл бұрын

for nuance, but also for a tight polar pattern response , a good off-axis sound, an (intended) coloration (sought-after non-linearity), something that's not necessarily "linear", but compliments the sound you're trying to capture :) there are enough reasons to buy an expensive mic. having that said, in many occasions you pay for a brand name. so instead of getting a high-end Neumann, try maybe a JZ, Lewitt, Austrian Audio - definitely 'up there' qualitywise, but being less know than Neumann / AKG etc., they are way more affordable.

FilippaQ no expert but coming from a film background I’ve always trusted sennheiser. My musician friends are always impressed if they’ve never used. It is one of those get what you pay for things tho.

I have some Sennhiser equipment in my studio. but as for the mic specifically, it sounded very dull to me in the singing part. The mic that sounded more or less good for the singer was the rode, but for the voice over Audio technica was the best. Here's the thing. Not every mic suits every voice. For instance my main mic is a Charteroak sa538 tube mic. In most of the cases it works perfectly, but sometimes there are singers with thin voice that sound a little bit dull with the mic. so I have to do more eq-ing to solve it out.

Nice test ! I see everyone has his favorite ;) I like the neutral and present breathing of the se Electronics because the gestion of the airflow is a must in the voice harmonics. Thanks.

It all depends on your use... I've always been a fan of both the t.bone and sE Electronics (Isn't the SC-450 a rebrand of the original SE 2000?). I use both for voice overs with very good results. I do prefer their bigger brothers the SC-1100 and SE Z3300a (now no longer produced), but any of these 5 microphones here are good value for money IMHO.

The Rode NT-1 is beter than the NT-1A IMO. I preferred the MK4 in all the tests for this video. I'm sure there would be scenarios where the other mics would be 'best' too.

I don't have very good ears and I'm no expert, but the Sennheiser Mk4 seemed the "smoothest" overall to me. The NT1A showed a little bit of harshness in the higher notes. What do you think?

And this, Ladies and Gentlemen, is a clean, perfect sample of a strong german accent. 😏 I got to know, as I sometimes suffer from it myself, If I have a bad day, tho maybe not as strong. 😅 nice listening samples and well explained. In this price Range, I’d go with the RØDE NT1, I guess. (Not the NT1A!)

I’m in the USA but I’m holding back purchasing from thomann because the prices seem suspiciously cheap to me. The Kawai mp11 in the US is 2800$ while I’m thomann it’s under 1900$ right now. Why so much cheaper?

why was the host not speaking directly into the microphones? he kept sitting down and was not standing to get the sound of voice into the mic, which resulted in an airy sound. he did not use those microphones properly at all.
