Thank you so much Marilyn for your kind comments. I have spent over 50 years helping seniors to move again. They are by far the toughest sector of people and most of them just want to stay well and/or get better. The secret is to make the daily commitment to do exercise and walking--keep moving and stay active in your mind. The concept f age has changed dramatically over the lat many years because of this increasing commitment to movement . Good luck and keep moving, at your personal level. Good luck. Sue

I love theraband exercises for myself too. I'm 56. I love knowing this is a great mobile exercise. Just pack a piece of theraband in your purse and can exercise anywhere at anytime. Can even do sitting down. Wow!!! and some people will say sometimes they just don't have time to exercise. Hmm.

Thank you for your question. If you are referring to the number of repetitions, this core group had built up to 10 repetitions. Originally when we first started the class, I spent quite a bit of time showing these seniors how to hold the EB, how to relax and breath, how to do the movement and we started with 2 to 5 reps and only some of the exercises that you see in the video. It took a while to get all of the seniors on the same page, doing the exercises correctly, and built up to 10 reps and the number of exercises that you see. Some of the seniors had to go at a slower pace, had to modify the exercises, and had trouble with the movement and coordination. The seniors in the video are the core of the group and quite accomplished at doing the exercises. The purpose of the video is to show how successful a program of this nature can be. That being said, I was just as proud of all seniors who participated regardless of their level of success. Elastic band is a great way to get seniors to think and move. Not pictured in this particular video are the warm up and cool down exercises that were done before and after the EB exercises. Thank you. Sue (PT Sue)

Sue, thank you for these wonderful videos. I worked for years in outpatient, work hardening, inpatient and long term care therapy as a therapy tech. I'm 56 and a full-time homemaker now helping my disabled husband at home. He is 59 still mobile just has not as much strength due to cardiac hx. and fibromyalgia and other physical limitations. I love theraband exercising. It is easier on the body; but really helps the flexibility and strengthening aspects for the body. God Bless you. I've worked with excellent PT's and OT's and Speech Therapist in past that taught me so much. I hope that you can make more wonderful utube videos. I've subscribe to your channel and set my notifications. Love Tamson from Kentucky.

Due to depression I'm becoming icreasingly pathetic physically as well, as it seems. Due to total lack of physical exercise, obviously. Rubber bands are extremely versatile low impact physical therapy workout aids. As it is, it IS possible to do some physical therapy exercises for your abs, lower back and shoulders even lying and/or sitting on your bed. The goal being obviously to rehabilitate yourself enough to be able to do free weights and bodyeight exercises (again). Rubber bands are very valuable for people who are REALLY out of shape. Later you can use them to lessen resistance in hodyweight exercises (chin-ups) or even to increase resistance in free weight exercises. Very useful on any level of fitness.

So very true. And, especially , for those individuals who don't or can't get out much to be more active. Elastic band exercises offers a good alternative and definitely makes a difference in strength and endurance when done consistently. And, of course, it is certainly better than doing nothing. Thank you for your comment PT Sue

Thank you so much for your interest and positive comments about the senior elastic band exercise class. In starting the class, I spent some time getting everyone on the same page of understanding the elastic band, how to hold it, the exercise movements, and then to build up their endurance as well as strength and coordination. The ultimate goal is 10 reps per exercise but we started with 2 or 3 reps. We also concentrated on breathing technique warm up and cool down exercises. It is so much fun to see the clients grow and feel better and stronger. Please feel free to ask me any further questions. Please feel free to visit my website, ptsue.com, and you are welcome to email me directly at: askptsue@gmail.com. Thank you. Sue

Thank you for your inquiry. No, the elastic band would not cause any problems. You choose the level (amount of resistance) of the elastic band to give the senior some resistance without any compromise. In this video, all seniors were using Medium level. PT Sue

Absolutely not! Strength exercise not only strengthen muscles, but also strengthen bones. For greatest effect, the exercise should be "pulsing" rather than static. Any exercise that causes a slight compression of the bone and then releases it, causes the body to increase the number of osteoclasts which serve to build bone. These exercises also strengthen tendons and ligaments and encourage the growth of new fibres..

Hello Jean, The elastic band can be cut if the length is too much for you. The band fits through each handle as much as you would like or need. Elastic band is a great way to exercise with resistance in your home and it comes in a variety of pressure gradients. I would suggest that you start with grade medium. with a good elastic band program, you can strengthen your arms , legs, and trunk. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at: askptsue@gmail.com Good luck. The best secret is to keep moving (exercise and walking) consistently and persistently.

Jean, look online for medical equipment company. Look under modality exercise equipment. Will most likely be able to locate theraband. This is what this banding is called. Different colors are different strength of banding. From easier to stretch to harder to stretch. There is also other excellent utube videos using theraband to exercise. I was a rehab tech for many years. I'm 56 now. Wish you the best of luck on your search.

Thank you for your interest. Elastic band use is a great way to do resisted exercise in your home. I suggest you visit your local Medical Equipment Store to see what they have. Also, if it works for you, look at Amazon--search exercise resistance bands. There are several to choose from. One of the better choices is: Omeril Resistance Band Set, 3 resistance bands (light-medium-heavy) 6" wide (easy to hold onto and place around a foot) and 59" long (plenty of length to work into full extension of your leg) for $16.99. I hope this helps. If you have any questions about elastic band exercises, please feel free to contact me. Thank you. PT Sue

Thank you for your input. The seniors in this video live in an Assisted Care facility. We do not put the class to music in order to help all seniors present to stay concentrating and focus on the exercise. The counting is to accomplish the same goal as well as to let the seniors know when the end of the particular exercise is. The counting also sets the rhythm of the class so that there is a cardiovascular benefit to the exercises. This particular class had advanced significantly (compared to the initial classes when first starting) in strength, coordination, and endurance by the time that this video was shot.
