It doesn’t just happen to old fools. My son’s friend (25) married a young beautiful Thai Issan girl. Wedding pictures, big do, money piled up on tables as Dowry (tradition), extended family, Buffalo’s… you name it, the kid was back in Blighty within 6 weeks living the life of a true young Brit. He was too impetuous, IT JUST DOESNT WORK, only for the minuscule numbers that want to become doormats. And the worst of the worst? Old fools who trade their lifetimes ££ efforts ( including their deceased wife’s contribution) to lavish on some bar girl’s dream with bought properties , family giveaways etc, etc. Truly, there’s no fool like an old fool🤦sad.

Been coming over to LOS for 27 years and have only been asked once which I refused ( never to hear from her again). First visit, I fell head over heels with the most amazing girl I had ever seen and returned to see her within 3 months and bought her an expensive ring. Luckily a friend of mine who worked in Jomtien (RIP Mr. Ian) kept tabs on her and informed me she was running around with loads of guys .I learned the hard way but it didn't stop me from returning year after year - just made me street wise!

As you say, these guys are not stupid, but emotionally unstable. I've lived in Patong for over 2 years and live with a thai girl. Not a bargirl though. She works in a restaurant. Initially, after we'd met I went back to Europe for a while, but didn't send her any money, Why should I? But, we live together and she still works. Yes, I pay the rent for our appartment, but then I have to live somewhere anyway and it doesn't cost me anything extra to have her stay with me. I do support her with maybe 100 punds a month, which is peanuts considering the comfort of having someone with me.

These days there are plenty of opportunities to meet a good Thai girl. They've got to go on dating apps and take the time to make sure the girl is who she says she is etc.

It is possible to date normal educated Thai women with good careers but you need to get out of the tourist traps and put genuine effort in, which most of these guys don't want to do and truly understand and respect their culture.

My first trip to Thailand was in 1974 with the merchant marine , we had guys back then falling in love with women they met in a night club or go go bar ! I know quite a few working girls who have been or are in the bar scene. It's usually because they are from poor families, even though they may have land and a house there's not much extra cash coming in. Many of them are quite open to finding a nice western guy who won't beat up on them and who will marry them or look after them long term. Why not? But for the guys, there can be expectations too. Such as having kids, or they genuinely like them. If there's a big age difference it is most likely to be about money. And if a western guy is serious about any Asian woman (or a Western woman even), he better get her pregnant and work out how to be together because if he is only visiting a few weeks now and then you can be sure she has other boyfriends or one night stands if she is still in the bar scene. Not always, but mostly. Those that aren't will tend to quit the bar work and move back to their village to be with family. And I know a few girls who are faithful because the guy has made a real commitment so they don't want to spoil it by cheating on him when he goes away for work. Bar girls can fall in love too. I also know guys who don't mind if their girl makes some extra cash when he is away. They have had a kid together. He built her a house, but he has a boat of his own and also goes back to his country for months because he has a wife there too. Too complicated for me. I also know many western girls who cheat on their partners when they are away. I've had casual relationships with some when I was younger. The boyfriend's away on working the mines or oil rigs and his lady is hanging out with me coz she's lonely. Happens everywhere.

Each to their own opinions Ed. My Thai 'girl ' is 52 this year and she's not very pretty and she's a bit tubby but she's the most genuine, good person I have ever met. She works from 6 in the morning to 6 at night, six days a week. I'm very happy to pay her rent (6.000 Baht a month) and treat her when I come over. She has never asked me for anything, I insisted I help her.

I have known a bar girl for 3 years she was 21 when I met her stayed friends and lived together for 6 months I finished it far to young for me but we stayed friends she lived in a place no Aircon and no shower I've just paid 5000 baht for her to live better she still works in the bar but I don't care, she was brilliant with me never asked for any money in 6 months together and we traveled and no money was exchanged i offered her 50000 baht to leave me she refused the money, I will keep her in an aircon apoartment with a shower as long as she needs it and eddy she is in a bar in udon thani on nutty park,5000 baht is 3 hours work for me but a massive luxury for her
