Under normal circumstances, everything in the gear carrier is turning together at near-zero relative speed and near-zero wear. With one axle welded stuck, the differential's gears are spinning like crazy from the left-right speed difference the whole time. These bearing-less pins holding the differential gears together aren't meant for that.

  • @fragman21

yep, they would need to weld the spider gears together then cut the axle on the left side in order for it to work properly.

Its just for a short term test, the humor of it. Of course its hell on the differential.. Not only the small gear bearing surfaces are under high speed rotation they never see in real life. , but the loading on the small gear teeth is also very high. This was really neat to see the actual failure

This. The moment he started talking about how it doesn't drive right. The diff I suspect has asymmetric spyder gears based on his comments on the gearing being incredibly tall. All that heat on a no bearing surface like spyder gears have welded them together it sounds like too He should have cut the axel in half, and weld the spyder gears to just saw, the gear ate through the pin and snapped it. they should have welded the diff and cut the axle for a proper test

Maximum continuous relative differential speed is generally based on having a smaller spare tire and a 'limp it home' torque input. Driving around with full torque on a 100% speed difference is well beyond what the splash lubrication could ever hope to sustain. Very cool to see it taken to complete failure.

When drifting I would break shafts now and then, it was a welded diff so the single powered wheel would spin at normal speeds but what was crazy was how easily it would break traction and spin. In the 1950s, a gentleman called Mr.Fell designed a gearbox for a railway locomotive that used only differentials. It had FOUR engines! Each one was switched in at certain speeds. No.1 from rest to around 10 mph, 1 & 2 10 to 25 ish, 1,2 & 3 25 to 45 then all 4 up to its maximum of 70 mph. They used fluid couplings (torque converters) to switch the engines in. Now there's a challenge!!

I think that it will travel twice as fast, with half the power. So if it originally did 20mph in gear 3 at 2000rpm, then it will do 40mph, but take twice as long to reach that speed. For a future project, I want to see the park mechanism of an automatic transmission put under extreme tests. Like put a car in park on the back of a flatbed and lift it up for steeper angle. I wonder if the wheels will lose grip, or the park gear will break first?

  • @brotang2953

    @brotang2953

I've slammed a car into park while driving and they just rattle to a jerk stop, it's essentially a large toothed cog that has a pin/lever that locks the output shaft which has a steep bevel so it'll hold but will " ping " around if under forced conditions. On grass/ gravel it might slide the wheels but on tarmac I'd say it'll hold unless bunted.

I wonder how worn the clutch was after the one wheel test, it's surprising that the clutch didn't give out from all the accumulated stress as the engine tries desperately to build up revs.

it's done cause it's been over stressed not just by the twice power to the one wheel but also from the fused parts in the diff that has to add more stress as well on the clutch

that was what i was exepting by this titel, but so you cut the power in half, so you only send 50% power to one wheel.

I bet the spiders (or shaft) wear out. Running a rwd with a compact spare on one wheel will do that

I wonder what would happen if you swapped the brakes from front to rear, in other words, the drums from the rear are on the front wheels, while the discs from the front are on the rear wheels. Would it stop normally? Or would it struggle due to the front brakes now being significantly weaker? Another one maybe would be to have totally rusted brake rotors, with rust deposits affecting the surface area of the rotor.

Make a vehicle steer in the opposite direction of the steering wheel motion. Example: Turn left and car goes right.

My older brother was somewhat hard on equipment and one cold day he had his Chevy pickup on the street with one wheel on payment and the other on ice. He floored it and the auto trans went through the gears till the speedo read 100 MPH and the wheel spinning at 200 MPH on the ice started smoking and burned the tread off of it. I am sure it did not help the rear end but he drove it for years after that. I think what really happened was the wheel burned through the ice and slowly reach payment and that is what took the tread off.

Okay that's the wrong way to do it. Get rid of the differential. Move the engine to the back and have the drive shaft drive one wheel directly. Maybe through a universal joint or maybe not. Before Super Beetle VW Bug had a single joint on the side of the gear box so as rear driven wheel went up and down their angle changed and that was fine. Two less joints to break and cheaper. If it was a hybrid electric car there could be one wheel driven by gas engine and another by electric. Maybe combo motor/generator after the clutch so gas engine can disengage and run one wheel through gear box. That might be too long to fit but just have the engine stick out the side of the car and call it a new style.

i think the heat would just burn the oil off quite quickly, id imagine they would still work some what. even when rear drums are full off oil and brake fluid they still work to some degree,

Those poor spider gears. That's a lot of torque going through something that isn't meant for it.
