Send In The Clowns - Stephen Sondheim (Allison Young cover)
Музыка
Hello everyone!
I know I have not posted any solo songs on my channel in a while, but I'm back baby! This song is one of my favorite Sondheim tunes, and I discovered it three days before his passing in 2022. I listened to it over and over in my hotel room when I was on tour on my day off, and wept for hours. It is such a gorgeously sorrowful and haunting song and I fell in love with it.
"Send In the Clowns" is a song written by Stephen Sondheim for the 1973 musical 'A Little Night Music', an adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's 1955 film 'Smiles of a Summer Night'.

If Allison were alive and singing in 1945 she would have been one of the biggest recording stars in the country. I absolutely love her voice.

No, we are lucky to have Allison because of KZread. She would most likely not have been discovered in the 40’s. She was able to bypass the blood sucking record companies and become known for her immense talent. Thanks to social media she has a chance to make it.

Fuck that. She's alive now and has a beautiful voice now. Who know what niches and needs society will have to come, and what a talented person might find themselves able to maneuver to.
Lovely to hear a heartfelt version of this rather than overblown Broadway style. Best version of this song I've heard
What art! From the rich vocals, the minimalist accompaniment , set design, and that Mona Lisa smile at 3:16.
It's great seeing young people, such as yourself , appreciating these wonderful songs of the past, but not only appreciating them, but doing them so well that someone like Sondheim himself would probably feel honored by the effort.
Allison has most always been a fan of the 40's style of music, style, clothes, and everything around her Many of us are totally mesmerized by this young womans voice that needs no back up or auto tune She and Josh Turner are a great duo as well She can do most any cover better than the original artist ! ! ! so cool..... oh, yeah........easy on the eyes too ! ! ! !

You wrote a lovely compliment to Allison only to spoil it with your last sentence. Not that I disagree, but did it need to be said!
Oh my word……so beautiful and deeply soulful. Thank you Alison for bringing such rich singing to us all.
incredible
There are very few artists who can produce this level of precision with such effortless finesse. Truly outstanding. 🙏
Very unusual in the sense that her singing evokes a splendor of many classical styles. What a gem of a talent.
This has for me always been a song on infinite sadness. I first encountered it as the theme for "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble" with John Travolta, sung by Judy Collins. When Glynis Johns passed away it was mentioned that the song was written specifically for her to sing in "A Little Night Music". No matter who sings it, I always weep. Thank you for yet another beautiful version. :)
Stunning! ❤❤❤ THAT, people, is brave talent. No overdubs, no back-up singers, fireworks, dancers, twerking, props or auto-tune to overwhelm the experience or distract from a lack of skill. Simple music and real singing with beautiful control and phrasing.
I'll never not be completely in love with this woman. That voice! It rings. If there are people that don't believe in angels, they haven't heard her.
Consistency with which miss Young make me cry is pretty astonishing.
Never one of my fav Sondheim tunes… until now. Good Lord, that was beautiful. ❤❤❤

Great voice. Awful song. Hated it in the 70’s & sad I came across it again 😂
ALLISON'S voice just keeps getting better,beautiful song!☘️🙂☘️🙂🐾🐾💯
Without question, this is my favorite rendition of this song. I feel like I had never really heard it until today.
Absolutely beautiful performance, I love it! Thank you so much Allison!!
Allison, Your perfect voice, technically, has reached a new plateau, that few singers achieve---inducing deep, poignant emotions deep inside your listeners. Bravo!
Ms. Young: I must say within seconds of listening to your voice, I was pleasantly surprise. Your voice is one of the purest, distinctive clarity I've heard in a long time. And, you seem to sing effortlessly! I hope that you also do some writing. Put it all together, I see Great Times ahead for You. Good Luck and God be with You. You're blessed with a beautiful Voice and Talent!
You just keep getting better and better and you never disappoint. Beautifully sung. Keep them coming.
I cant remember how many times ive heard this song, this may be my favorite rendition. thank you.
This will be the favorite version of everyone who hears it. Thank you,, Allison.

I listened to this song for decades by various professionals. No one has vocalized it as well as you have here; bravo!
I first heard this song when Judy Collins recorded it! You sing it as beautifully as she ever did! You are indeed a, "ruby throated sparrow"!! Love you!!
One of my very favorite songs sung so well in the past by Judy Collins and now made new again by Allison. Thank you for this post Allison, you added your special touch to this piece and somehow made my life, "rich". The lyrics always haunt me.
Best version I’ve heard. So much soul
That’s the way this song should have been released, you slowed it down just perfect, LOVED IT !!!!
About 40+ years ago I saw "A Little Night Music" on Broadway. "Send in the Clowns" is the hit song from this musical. I think they sang it two times in this wonderful musical. About 10 years later I was driving a taxi in NYC and picked-up an old woman and this woman with a very distinctive voice said to take her to a 5th Avenue location. I recognized that voice - that woman was Hermione Gingold. She was a little depressed. I said "Oh, Hermine Gingold, I saw you in "A Little Night Music" and you were magnificent." And she replied "Yes, I was." I think I made her feel better - and she made my day.
Simply beautiful. As a child of the 60's I never "heard" this song until now. I shared a tear with you. Thanks
Oh wow, this is sublime! It gave me goosebumps. The timing was perfect, the guitar just enough. Loved it!

@@JackFlaps well haven't you noticed when they are playing with Josh they all seem under the cosh of his perfectionism, afraid to make a mistake , killing spontaneity...they are all great musicians , singers but seem to be stiffled...? Well take a look...one take , then another, another , another..? Thats not musical freedom...or am I seeing things wrong ?
Wow...wow...wow! What a masterclass in music artistry...from the sublime guitar to the haunting vocals...wow...wow...wow! Allison at the top of her game!
Such a captivating vocal timbre. I LOVE your voice.
Ms Allison, your vocal range is amazing. Thanks for keeping the old songs alive and well.
your singing, and that typewriter, are absolutely gorgeous

Classic voice' old soul, beautiful.
Your voice! Oh my word...Please put up more solo songs.
Unbelievably beautiful voice on a very classic song. Life is good.
Very well done! The hardest part of this song is letting it breath and you did that extremely well.
Sweet Allison singing me a sweet lullaby to fall asleep to. Life is perfect. Also been a while since I've seen Allison at Grandma's wearing her clothes. I miss it.
I check iTunes regularly for more music from you. I hope when you record another album you include this one. I will be waiting a ready to buy it.
That was absolutely stunning. Brava.
Your voice is the very definition of sweet and pure. And you sing this so well. Love you for doing it.
Never has a voice brought me so close to tears. You are simply incredible, from such an angelic voice to the way you smile with your eyes. Breathtaking rendition by an absolutely amazing young woman. Thank you for being you
Such a beautiful voice, it is a sheer pleasure to listen to, very soothing
It’s such a pleasure to hear you sing! Absolutely beautiful! 👏👏👏👏👏
Allison, your voice is so beautiful and epic. I love listening to you sing.
Simple and lovely. Thanks Allison.
Manchmal ist weniger mehr. Dieses gefühlvolle Gitarrenspiel gepaart mit einer zart souligen Stimme, einfach wundervoll: Mehr davon .
In maybe 5 years, or max 10 years, this exceptionally beautiful & talented girl will be Globally top of the Charts!!!... You'll see...
Damn it, I keep coming back here, to comment!!! I'm a 'musician', and my 'Brain' is well aware of what constitutes audible beauty... However, also being 'not' blind, I/we are blessed with Allison's obvious personal Beauty, that always transcends every thing she plays/does, to an indescribable beautiful visual culmination... sigh...Our World is blessed!!!!!
Quelle jolie et douce mélodie, personne ne peut mieux l'interpréter que vous, merci Allison ❤Et l'enregistrement est d'excellente qualité!👍
Classic song, classic singer ❤️
Allison, thank you for using your gift so wonderfully, and to the benefit of all of us. Magnificent!
Lovely.
I'm absolutely overwhelmed by your arrangement. Such a great way to take the sophisticated chords and make them approachable, yet still encapsulating the feel of the song. You could do a lesson video on this.
I loved your version of this with the Accords last night!
Judy Collins 1975. I love this song. But with your warm voice You make the song better! Thank You Allison.
There is a universal vibration that brings peace to the mind and soul. That vibration is your voice. Thank you, Allison. 😊
It's been a very long time since a voice, and music, touched me this way. Thank you so much for sharing your talent 🌷 Greets from the Netherlands 🇳🇱, Tonny.
So wonderful!!!
I could listen to this on repeat for ever
Everyone's going to comment on how beautiful this is sung and played so let me compliment whoever set up the room. Kudos. It really sets the atmosphere. The way the orange red pops against the more mute colors. These small shining lights amongst Grey and the absent of color; of happiness? Gorgeously shot :')
This song has been performed by some truly great singers and musicians. The bar is quite high for this one. Allison, you did not disappoint. Through the subtle changes in your playing to match the flow of the songs sad poetry and truly feeling the emotion of the song, you made this your own. Well done!
This is what a voice that is freed sounds like.
YOU ARE AMAZING WITH CLASS AND BEAUTY AND A VOICE LIKE AND ANGEL!
Perfect Allison, not an easy song to sing but you made it your own and re-invigorated the whole song. You have an amazing expressive voice and even ventured into light opera here. Gorgeous.
I recently stopped by... I stayed... I listened... I tried to hold off but did cry... 👑👽🙏 XTRM
I,m a fan for sure. Allison is the kind of girl men dream about when there at sea or at war and want something nice to think about. A real beauty. Also hold her self with class. What a babe.
I have posted about this song before but that voice is so incredible
Allison, it is time for Broadway! You have it all. You are the total package.
I have been following in her channel for years, beautiful voice, and human being.
Every time when I think I found my favorite Song from you there's another one. Please never stop making musik and share with us.
a voice just barely this side of sand slipping through an hourglass a voice so solid and present that if an earthquake hit just now, I'd try to grab hold of it to steady myself a continuum in between, that you glide across without a bump, fast or slow as you want glorious
Thanks god you're back!
Allison, I am without words, and I am not usually like that. I've heard this song jillions of times, but never like this. Thank you is all I can say, and that doesn't seem enough.
I never heard this sung in 3/4 time before, but it works magnificently. Thank you, Ms. Young!
Such a great voice, thank you as always.
I never began to get this song before. An exquisite rendition
With all of the unique notes, this isn't an easy song to sing. Incredible rendition.
Beautiful in every way ❤
When I was much younger, I could not stand this song! Hated it! A few years ago, however, I heard SInatra's rendition. Perhaps it is my age now, his interpretation, the poignance of the lyric. My reaction since then is visceral. You, Allison, have hit my soul. Thank you.
My daughter has very long curly red hair like yours! You are a beautiful bird!
Heard the sound of a clown that cried in the alley - - - probably know that one too - - - just - - - wow - - - you did fantastic work!
A voice I could listen to forever.
There are no words.
Beautiful Love 🙏🌸🎼🌸🎶🌸🎵
What an exquisite voice!
Beautifully sung. Great arrangement. Much more spare and simple than I'd heard since Judy Collins did it so many years ago. Very, very well done.
Wow. I only knew this song casually as either a Frank Sinatra or Judy Collins version. For being stripped down to just a singer and a guitar, this added a whole lot of nuance that had me listening closely the whole way. Very nice!
What a beautiful voice
Send In The Clowns is already a beautiful song, but your rendition is so beautiful.
I'm a musical theatre Geek and a Sondheim freak and you just blew me away. I've never heard this song done on guitar before. Your playing style gave it a slight country feel, which oddly enough, worked beautifully. Would love to hear what you'd do with "For Forever" from Dear Evan Hanson.
I agree with Reina del Cid! I am so glad to be able to experience the both of you. Tear in the eye, lump in the throat.
Thank You! This song was a friend of mines favourite sung then by Judy Collins. It was around 1979 and Dave was fulfilling a dream to work in photography in BC, Canada as well as ski. 19 years old, while driving from Ontario to BC he was tragically killed in a car accident. This song was played at his funeral, his mother knew it was a favourite. Memories live forever! Thanks! Dave was a wonderful friend.
Oo-De-Lally came up in my insta feed and I was instantly such a fan that I sought you out on KZread(and found Josh and the ByGones too)! Thank you for such great music!
I remember when I played this for my students. I'll always be remembered for how I Sondenheimed those kids.
I love your singing. It is comforting and soothing.
