Glynis Johns sings "Send in the Clowns" from A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (1973, Broadway)

Today the formidable and talented Ms Glynis Johns celebrates her 100th birthday. To celebrate the occasion, we present a news feature from February 1973 on the then newly-opened musical, A Little Night Music, in which Ms Johns originated the role of Desiree Armfeldt and for which she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Hughes Rudd interviews Stephen Sondheim on the score of the musical, who plays an excerpt of his favourite song from the show, followed by a clip of the song during a performance, as sung by Ms Johns. This would have been perhaps the first televised performance of the song, but the segment was not aired, and I edited the raw footage and sound materials together. At the end of the segment I have also included the raw footage from the performance so as to be able to hear Len Cariou's dialogue. Forgive the watermark.

"The song sat so well in Glynis' voice that at the recording session, even though she'd never recorded a song before, she did it perfectly in one take. I've heard it sung by many fine singers (I'm happy to say), but to me her version is still the most satisfying." - Stephen Sondheim.

Lucky to see her in 1973. Sitting in the second the row, watching to tears flow down her face. With the great Len Cariou...Frederick Egerman, Sweeney Todd.

I have been a fan of "A Little Night Music" for decades. I have the Broadway cast album with Glynis Johns as Desiree singing her signature "Send in the Clowns." We were lucky enough to see her in the revival in L.A. when she played the role of Desiree's mother, Madam Armfelt.......Thank you, Glynis, for all the years of film, theater, and TV, where you used your "highest sense of intelligence", as you said. Well done, after 100 years of life! 👏 Safe journey back home. ♥

Holy shit! The man Stephen Sondheim said it himself. I absolutely hate this stupid "non-hummable critique" people utter. It's the same stupid "memorable" thing that people kept talking about. I can hum the entirety of the rite of spring, because I've listened to it a bunch. People say something isn't memorable like it's a measure of quality when it actually just means they don't know the music. Nothing more nothing less

No one does this song like Glynis johns. How did you get this. Bernadette was great as well, though the production was nowhere as good as the original. And Len cariou. How wonderful. He was wonderful with Lansbury as well in Sweeney Todd.
