Really good to see so many people out there helping, the amount of volunteers outnumbered the number of actual firefighters. If it wasn't for them this would probably have gotten way out of hand.

@@Sirisma after spending years as a wildland firefighter first with the British Columbia forest service and later with a volunteer fire rescue brigade and northern alberta I think I can make a good call on what I see. Hay on the deck not burning fire throughout the tractor/power unit and hay on the ground that is or might be burning the idea is to create a barrier between what is on the ground and burning and the Intact bales on the trailers deck. The volunteer firefighters can then work on the fire the other part of the video was fire fighters using a bush truck attacked the head of the fire I think to prevent the rapid spread into the bushes along the other highway at the junction. Now you Are of course entitled to you opinion. What I have done here is explain what I saw and thought as I was watching the video. I was not there so I am only going by the results.

Story of the pyromaniac telehandler :-) Did a great a job, even if he made the bonfire bigger by pushing some unburnt hay into it. Respect. The front 2 bale rows were burning from the inside, almost burnt through. It had to be separated from the unburnt hay. The 3rd row could have been saved, but that's not possible to tell from the ground: there were flames between row 2 and 3. Quick action was the best action.

That would be a fire attack in the form of removing the fire from the remaining fuels. It is isolated and will run out of the fuel it can reach soon. An added plus is the fire fighters can use more water on the vehicle and less on the hay.

  • @wilsjane

@@retiredarthritic2083 My only thought was that since the truck was beyond repair, they could have concentrated more on the exposures and created a barrier area between the truck and the load. With burning fuel, water tends to spread the flames. However, their is always wisdom in hindsight.

The smartest guy out of all of these part timers is the pedi bone operator I mean with being a rural area the available equipment on scene there’s definitely a water storage and shipping issue that they were contending with so you need to be smarter than a hose understanding the future and current fuel source and go into protection mode of that source, his actions of getting the hot load away from the rest of the load while there were guys out holding a hose over the wrong areas, that dude saved the day preventing a potentially very LONG day and night with 6 minutes of smart work completed preventing hours of potentially dumb grunt work! It was killing me watch equipment show up and throw water in places that weren’t protecting the big fuel source.

Those trucks are specifically used in rural areas just for brush fires. They have little tanks of water...just enough to shut down spots of burning grass and weeds to help stop the spread. I have them in my area. I think my County has 2 or 3 of them. Really nice trucks.

Added bonus extendable front loader w/exp operator. Had they had Batt Chief could have gone smoother. Last pumper too damn close to semi on fire. Individual turnout gear lacking here/there helmet/scba but OA all *did their best with WHAT THEY HAD.* Excellent drone footage. *LT/Batt Chief can turn this into training and debriefing take that extra minute to grab air and masks.* Good job overall. To the video drone pilots: good shot! Interesting how badly pressed straw burns. But the farmer with his dozer makes things worse. First he distributes the straw bales so that they burn better, then he makes the burn area larger. It would have been better to shovel up dirt and pour it onto the burning straw. But the farmer was probably under stress, you can't think straight.

This was pretty good, I wonder how experienced the department is with agricultural fires? We train for them every now and again, gran bin fires, combine fires, you'd be surprised how often the motor catches on fire on a pivot well head. Our first priority would be to soak down the unburned hay once the flames managed to tunnel and pull a draft it'll get real nasty real quick. Work from the trailer to the front 2 lines would have been nice but you had what you had this isn't NYC

Just an educational question as a new drone operator: aren't fire zones an automatic no-fly zone? I read that the regs state that forest fires and other emergencies are no fly zones for UAVs. Of course it might be that you are part of the fire crew and have authorization to film. Just wondering what the situation here was and why you were able to film it.
