Selkies, the Icelandic Selkolla and Seal Folklore | Nordic & Scottish Stories

In this video we explore tales of the human-seal creatures known as Selkies that can be found in Scandinavian/Nordic folklore as well as tales from Scotland, especially Orkney and Shetland. We also cover some general seal folklore and old wives' tales and the Icelandic seal-headed troll woman known as Selkolla.

I’ve heard a version where her youngest son gave it to her on purpose, knowing what she was. I’ve heard a version where she continued to visit her children and make sure they had plenty of fish to eat, even though she was never seen in human form again, I’ve heard a version where once she’s presented with her sealskin, she actually finishes her day, putting the kids to bed and making dinner for her husband and then leaving in the middle of the night.

A seal is cutest. The cinematography, sampling, editing, pacing, and general good taste of the video are over the top excellent. The coastal scenery is dreamy. The host and narrator has a dreamy rich voice. Her connection with the subject matter is expressed in her make-up, which drew me in from a distance.

The sealskins remind me a lot of the swanskins valkyries wore in many norse legends, including the tale of a man taking it to force her to marry him. The marriage lasted until she retrieved the swanskin.

supricing you dont mention the story of Kópa konuna (seal woman) from the faroe islands considering you are using the picture of her statue in Mikladalur (in the faroe islands) and the faroese selkie stamps😅
