Self-Enquiry & Mindfulness Meditation ~ Shinzen Young
Shinzen responds to the question, "How does self-enquiry relate to mindfulness practice?"
Self-enquiry has been taught in the traditions such as the zen, Hindu and non-dual approaches. They all have in common turning awareness back on itself.
At 2:14 Shinzen talks about two aspects that happen in mindfulness practice with time:
1) the habit of meditating (concentration, sensory clarity and equanimity) begins to meditate without the need for a separate "I" here "doing" the meditation. this leads to non-dual experience.
2) you develop a sensitivity to what's called impermanence, including when things vanish and we are aware of just endings. In Shinzen's system these vanishings are called "gone".
Shinzen shares that self-enquiry points awareness to where things come from and mindfulness points awareness to where things vanish into and as such there is a kind of symmetry between them.

Shinzen is a genius teacher and a great humanitarian
Self enquiry has produced a subtle but profound shift in my meditation practice that has really brought the sense of 'me' to the foreground in a way years of strict mindfulness did not. Which has in turn fed back into my mindfulness practice. I have been greatly inspired in self enquiry by Adyashanti's teachings.
This is one of your best talks in my opinion. Great stuff.
Mindfulness never touched the findings I've had from self inquiry. Not even close. But, as he noted, probably everyone wouldn't have this.
So awesome thanks for this teaching!
I,ve had spontaneous laughing during watching the video for some reason. It leaded to emotional release :)
Very illuminating. Thank you.
Glimpsing between Yin to Yang to beyond the polarities- return to source.
seems to be the correlation would be stronger in pointing to Anata, or absence of the self or person. realizing through mindfulness that there is no "me" present but simply presence and 'object' themselves is similar to self-enquiries search for the self
Atma Vichara properly translated does not mean self inquiry rather it means self abidance. Self Abidance means being aware of awareness or being aware of being. The aim of both mindfulness and Ramana s self inquiry method point to this awareness as a goal. The direct path is to become aware of awareness itself, ignoring phenomena either arising or vanishing as an aid in meditation to arrive at one s SELF
Very good analysis but in my experience(which has has involved being steeped in both for extended time periods), the self inquiry has had a greater "felt" sense of being present during the self investigation, the effect then taking me to a deeper place and eventually culminating in a greater de-conditioning of my vasanas.

The Theravada Buddhists that have come across don't recognize Non Dualism as a valid point of view. Apparently it would seem they think they can separate themselves into another separate detached part of the Universe with different laws of physics which seems rather odd and unreal. It quite clearly states the word 'Unification' in original Sutta 111, so why do they ignore it, making out other traditions of Buddhism to be incorrect with their Unified views. Although, some are not fond of Hindu texts their double note Vipassana looks like a poorly constructed Antar Mouna.
am i wrong or the source that he is talking about is nothingness. tha place where things come and go.
