Self Enquiry vs Mantra Meditation

What makes self-enquiry different from mantra meditation? In this conversation we take a closer look at these approaches to meditation and the different paths they take to bring us to the presence of awareness - the direct path or the indirect path (also called the progressive path) .
Rupert says throughout the day most people's attention range rapidly from one object to another. Their attention very rarely gets time to let go of any object and sink back into its source, the presence of awareness.
In response to this, mantra meditation suggests that instead of paying attention to 10,000 things, just pay attention to one - in this case, a mantra. This is not yet the return of the mind to its source but it is a prelude to that. The journey the mind takes back to its essence goes via an object which is why it is called the indirect or progressive path.
In self-enquiry the mind goes directly back to its source. This pathway is affected by a question such as ‘what is it that knows or is aware of my experience?’ or ‘am I aware?’ These questions take the mind directly to the heart of awareness and that's why it's called the direct path. It doesn't go via an object.

    I have so much respect for Rupert's "compassionate concessions" and his clear explanation of when and why these are appropriate. I found much more truth and wisdom in Rupert's gentle wisdom than in "fierce" teachers who dismiss progressive-path methods with contempt. So very grateful for Rupert's unwavering lucidity and skillful guidance.

    The vibrational frequency resonates with the mind's natural frequency, which causes a resonance of sorts. This triggers a response or pathway or wormhole. This tips the journey or focus from the outside to the inside. Eventually, it leads to immersion in or with the self.

    Interesting view. I think these views are in some sense all valid. When I consider the power of mantra, in particular let's use "OM" (not "A-U-M") for example, the first thing I notice is the shape of the vowel. "O" has the same shape as in the word "whole" and also at the beginning of the word "One." And in so far as the origins of Indo-European languages are etymologically similar it could very well be that these sounds evoke a very primordial or even subconscious (instinctual & intuitive) sense of the interconnectness of consciousness and life. The vibrational aspect to me is different than often interpreted however. I dont believe there are specific "frequencies" directly correlated to certain mantras. The pitch and tone of those who have chanted these mantras throughout history have varied so much as to render the idea that there's a "precise and single frequency" associated with the mantra as an impossible fallacy. What's important in the mantra is that it holds your attention and "protects" you from the mind that attaches to appearances. Yes, there is vibration and frequency involved, EVERTHING is vibrating and everthing has frequency- life, death, life, death etc... this is a type of vibration. But at least as far as I can discern, the vibrational aspect of mantra is "below" the overt effectiveness of it which derives from its ability to "narrow the focus" and bring the mind closer to stillness. "Stillness" after all is the goal because in stillness is found wholeness, interconnectedness, Oneness. Even in Western science, the world of matter (the physical world) is in theory nothing more than the vibrational manifestation of an infinite and omnipresent "field" of energy in which the ripples ("vibrations") are the particles. OM 🙏

    I also appreciate the analogy but have a question. It appears to me, different spaces or places feel different and affect the body mind. Space appears empty but it is? What about energy, elements, particles molecules etc ?

  • @DaleRogers

    @DaleRogers

    @@jerryhoran6036 Molecules are made up of atoms. Atoms, we now know, are primarily space (what ever that is). The “particles” are bundles of energy. What is energy? Your guess is as good as mine. When I was an undergrad (Mechanical Drafting and Design) I asked my physics teacher what energy is. I said I know that if I look at a wave, what I’m seeing is energy moving through some medium; air, water, earth (earth quakes) and electricity. I said what is the thing that is moving through the medium? He told me to go ask the Philosophy department. That is why my interest lies in metaphysics. Physics measures relationships between observable phenomena. Beyond that, we speculate. Why do spaces “feel” different? Great question. There a number of models to explain it. If consciousness is fundamental, meaning it can’t be subdivided, then the answer is probably there. What is consciousness? No one knows. It is the great mystery, at least in the world of 3D.

    The idea that God is in or inside us is false. Even due it might seem so in God-Consciousness. God talking through your mouth and voice, moving your hands and body, looking trough your eyes, this is Super-God-Consciousness, this is the Absolute Truth. But even due all this, God is not inside us or in us. God is Formless. God is Omnipresent. Consciousness is Formless. Saying God is inside or in you is claiming that God has some form which is inside or in you. No. The God-Realized were perceived as insane when they started talking to themselves in bliss (God talking through you, so it seems like you are talking to yourself, but actually, it's God talking to you), by those who couldn't see the Most Great.

    ....Once upon a time ' doesn't exist , I would often vibrate to a song entitled 'Space is the place' performed by a group called the 'jonzun crew'. The mantra went, "You must follow me", "We will follow you". A 'crew' typically would do synchronized movements as a unit of 1. 🎉 Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, right. There is only awareness. ✌ It would probably be accurate to state or imply that an instrumental song vibration doesn't carry the added weight of lyrics. ❤

    Dr. Jeffery Martin has studied this topic and found that both practices can lead to a de-identifying with the narrative self, but it can depend a lot on the condition of the individual when exposed. It may not be effective at one point, but that withdrawing from it, trying other practices, and returning can flip the switch. The direct path people like to think that they are somehow better or faster or who knows what, but it’s not true. And asking a question can also be a form of looking at an object that leads to recognition of awareness as foundational. Martin has not found that there’s any necessity for Sanskrit, that is some certain vibration seems questionable. People transition using mantras in English, quite well, apparently. Just like with direct inquiry, there’s no guarantee that any one individual is ready for the shift.

    Certainly, a totally open mind for God and a total wanting of God, with sincere prayers on the side, can get you Grace. For God Hears all prayers, since prayers are a real thing, which works, that means, God answers it and makes it into reality, into actuality. It's a sick thing, totally amazing and incredible, and it's True. I didn't get to know and meet and experience God trough prayer, but it works, I speak from direct experience, believe me, it's true. Myself, I had to gamble with my very life twice with the demons and devils, that's how I got God. Even due I am in God-Consciousness right now, Absolute Evil also is here. Claiming my life. To this day I suffer the consequences of using my free will to serve evil, when the whisperer whispered into my ears, I got fucked and did my soul unright! But even due that, they (Evil) failed to take my life, even due their inside attack was extreme and brutal, which almost annihilated my consciousness and life. I survived, and God forgave me. I will prevail this too, like I always have (with Evil), and I fear it not, for God is with me.

    What’s crazy is that there is absolutely no practice that can awaken you. 1) There is no you to wake up. That which is fully and ever wakeful is already here and there is no individual. The individual does not awaken. 2) Awakening is not an experience. Those describing experiences are lost in the constant staring at experiences believing the apparent experiences are what’s real. When “awakening,” whatever that is supposed to mean, occurs there is the timeless recognition (not a new or memorized recognition based upon mental impressions as the illusory mind is entirely bypassed. It’s not the individual. And it’s not the practices. It has absolutely nothing to do with any of that. So once there seems to be an apparent experience being identified by the I-thought, as an “awakening experience.” That is your first clue the ego is at work. The ego is what identifies and labels everything in relationship to itself. If the I is not seen for what it is, the ego will continue with its illusory story that isn’t really happening.
