Tesla FSD Beta is an improving product. It is not available to the public yet, only to a set of beta testers that are using the system to help improve it. I will be as honest as possible with my experiences. I will be painting FSD Beta in a positive light. FSD Beta is an amazing step forward that is still being worked on. The media is terrible and will pick up any possible negative to spin it. I will not support that.
If this video is more than 1 week old, chances are the system has already been updated and is better than what you are seeing here. Please see the latest videos for the most up to date information! This is version 2020.44.15.4

I hope it works that way on left turns when touching the accelerator. On right turns and going straight ahead I think hitting the accelerator means go now. Also, I keep wondering if there is a setting that makes Dirty Tesla’s car stop so far back from the stop signs and lights.

Here in BC you're supposed to move up on green when turning left. So long as your front wheels are past the crosswalk (or stop line if there isn't one) before the light turns red, you count as "in the intersection" and not running the red.

@@benlac1000 As long as there's enough room for you to fully enter the intersection during the green phase then your are allowed to complete the turn after the light changes. It doesn't matter how many vehicles are in ahead as long as you don't enter the intersection after the light turns red.

Yes. In driver's ed they taught us to move into the intersection/box on a green and turn when safe even if the light turns red while you are waiting. If there's a sign that says "Do Not Block the Box," then you can't hang out in the intersection. Also, I agree with benlac 1000 about the one car scenario. Personally if oncoming traffic is busy and more than one lane, I may not pull forward but wait for the green arrow because it can be very difficult to see oncoming traffic in the far lane if the view is blocked by another left-turning vehicle in the closest oncoming lane.

I believe this is the pertinent law (for Michigan): tldr; legal to move into the intersection, cross traffic must yield even if their light is now green. " (a) If the signal exhibits a green indication, vehicular traffic facing the signal may proceed straight through or turn right or left unless a sign at that place prohibits either turn. Vehicular traffic, including vehicles turning right or left, shall yield the right-of-way to other vehicles and to pedestrians and bicyclists lawfully within the intersection or an adjacent crosswalk at the time the signal is exhibited." legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?mcl-257-612

General practice is when you're making a left turn, you pull into the intersection- so that when you complete turn you will not be in that quarter of the intersection you should never ever be in. Also, you do not pre-turn your wheels (if you're rear ended you could be pushed into oncoming traffic). When the oncoming traffic clears, and there's no one in the cross walk, you can complete turn into any driving lane. (So on a left you can turn into lanes 1 or 2, or 3 if there's one. On a right turn you are only supposed to turn into the far right driving lane). In Los Angeles my wife was hit by a woman who had no license, driving an unregistered and uninsured car, no driver's training, except her husband who taught her, "When the light turns yellow, that's when you turn." He failed to mention to check that there's no oncoming traffic. You never have a legal right to do anything unsafe. (Despite some of my 8th graders thinking jaywalking was their Constitutional Right - worth dying for! (It's okay because my family will get a lot of money mister.) ) So if someone scoots through on the yellow and you can only complete the turn on red - that's legal. But if you were waiting back behind the line, you can't complete your turn. (If this sounds all legal and true... I have no authority other than drivers' ed and being a nerd, but I'm pretty sure it's accurate.) It's also really great to see how well the Beta is advancing. Again, it's like a teenager learning to drive, Initially, the basics - steering, braking are not that difficult, but all the details are the steep learning curve. Later when they've got some hours, maybe even their license, with each, uh-oh, a young driver not only learns, but learns how to learn.

While I realize that many suburb dwellers may be unaccustomed to the maneuver,, the proper way to handle a left turn when there's no green arrow is to enter the intersection during the green phase and then complete the turn as soon as the oncoming traffic allows. As long as you fully enter the intersection prior to the light turning red then the you're allowed to complete the left turn after the light changes.

Great job! You have the best FSD videos. It really needs to creep out into the intersection on green left hand turns. Also, I would be nervous if the wheels turned left while it was stopped in a left turn lane. Driver's ed tells us to keep the wheels straight until we commit to the turn, in case the car gets rear-ended. You don't want to be shoved into the path of ongoing traffic in case of an accident.

I watched a video yesterday showing off the Waymo system and it’s really interesting to compare how these two systems handle certain situations. The edge case issues are definitely similar challenges, but I think the Tesla does a better job of not freezing up completely- although it arguably can get away with that since a human is still behind the wheel to intervene if needed. I’m excited for the future of self driving cars everywhere!

Yes the car should enter the intersection when turning at a light. Entering the intersection on a green or yellow light is legal and leaving the intersection on any color light is legal. What is illegal is ENTERING the intersection on a red light. As long as you are IN the intersection, the light color when LEAVING intersection is irrelevant. That’s a mostly standard law for most roadways. There are some intersections you’d literally never be able to turn at if you didn’t enter the intersection before initiating the turn. In some states it’s not clear what the law means, stating things along the lines of “a driver shall not impede the flow of traffic exercised by those with a right-of-way”, without explicitly stating intersection entrance rules. So as long as those with a right-of-way are not impeded, you’re not breaking the law. You’d be entering the intersection on green/yellow while having the right-of-way and exiting the intersection as the oncoming lane lost its right-of-way, thereby leaving the intersection before impeding the new right-of-way. No laws broken. There hasn’t been a successful ticket/traffic citation for entering an intersection on a green light in my state. Ever. Not one. So those kind of maneuvers are where driving judgment comes in. As long as you’re being safe, I’d enter an intersection before the turn is required to minimize my time to make the maneuver across right-of-way traffic.

We were in my VW, pouring rain, working the wipers with a piece of string. We were starving (that or being stoned the only reason anyone ate at Pizza Bob's - also being young and clueless). We had $5, enough for pizza but no pop (soda wasn't invented until I moved out of Michigan in 1979). They didn't charge us. Somehow this meant something at the time. Sorry, where were we? Oh, yeah your car was driving you around while you were talking about it....isn't that a little weird? Well, it will be if you're still doing it in five years. Cheers.

Yes, the lead car making a left turn should move up to roughly the middle of the intersection and wait for oncoming cars to clear. Legally the second car should hold back until the first car clears, but as a practical matter this is often dumb, as then only one car gets through per light instead of two or three. If you do not move up into the intersection, you can then get stuck without enough time to get through.

I took driver's ed from a company based in Ann Arbor (All Star Driver's Ed) in 2006. We were taught to pull out into the intersection, that if the vehicle is passed the solid white line, you can complete your turn, even on red (as long as it's safe to proceed). Unless that law has changed, in the last 14 years, I'm sure it's the proper way to do that, and legal in the state of Michigan.

I have a route suggestion: Find a route with severe potholes. Obviously not for the current build... but eventually they will need that feedback too. Be thinking of where you might go for this use case. In Michigan, (like us Northern states, such as Oregon) should be easy to find a good road to test.

Thank you! When the light turns green on a left-hand turn waiting for oncoming traffic, I pull into the intersection but don't block it. When the light starts to turn yellow, I pull further into the intersection (effectively blocking it) so the car behind me can legally turn left too. Without pulling into the intersection, I know of many situations where oncoming traffic never opens up to turn. Staying back at the line, the car would never legally be able to make the turn.

I did learn in PA driving school you are supposed to move into the intersection before turning. And that once you move out into the intersection, you are allowed to complete the turn even if the light has turned red.

Have been enjoying your videos pre FSD beta testing but from a U.K. point of view it’s interesting to see it in action. I just can’t see FSD working on our roads though, they’re too narrow, cars double park, the roads are full of potholes etc. I’m just not convinced it’s worth the £6k+ they are asking for right now, let alone the increase when we start seeing beta testing. I do see how it’ll work in the US though and think long term it will be a huge benefit/addition to the driving experience. I stand to be corrected though when it does roll out over here, but if it can work on our roads it’ll work anywhere I guess. Keep up the good content and be good to see some other none FED videos too mixed in 👍🏼

I've had a MY for almost a month. I did buy the FSD and truly hope I get value out of it sometime. Right now I'm on the homeward bound leg of a 700 mile trip to pick up a 17' travel trailer and when towing you can't use FSD. I can use the cruise control but it is almost useless. When going up I-5 through the mountains in Norther California, there are lots of yellow warning signs, some with flashing yellow lights, on both side of the road and sometimes overhead as well. The autopilot keeps hitting the brakes quite aggressively at times and if you have a Semi truck behind you when that happens... its not pretty. I really hope that when FSD is released, it also makes cruise on autopilot smoother and SAFER as well.

I had to check the driver's manual, in NY it says that "you may pull into the intersection". The Michigan DMV says (page 30) "You are making a left turn at an intersection. When the light is green, you may turn once all oncoming traffic has cleared. If you are still in the intersection when the light turns red, complete your turn as quickly and safely as possible.", which tells me that either way is legal. To me it is better for traffic congestion and more considerate to other people is to pull into an intersection in order to complete a left turn.

First thanks for your work to inform us. The moving into an intersection before a clear way through is very interesting. On the east coast or west coast you would be crucified if you didn’t go into the intersection and would often never be able to turn left. But the Midwest driver is typically trained to not go into the intersection. The law is to not block the intersection but that is only relevant when the light changes and you don’t move! Also the timid Midwest driver will say if you are in the intersection when the light changes to red you are going through on red. That is not true - you went into intersection on green.
