Over and over again I realise that what God commands us to do is actually for our own benefit as well (being selfless, serving others...etc).

Was literally reading an incredible sermon on this an hour ago. Here's a bit of it that fits this perfectly: "Perfect love casts out fear" - Fear is entirely based on a consideration of some possible personal evil consequence coming down upon me from that clear sky above me. Love is based upon the forgetfulness of self altogether. The very essence of love is, that it looks away from itself, and to another. Fill the heart with love, and there is an end to the dominion of fear!

Most or all rules come from Christianity. And I'm pointing towards the good rules. And I meaning to say from God directly from Jesus Christ himself not Christianitys followers. Christianity is the real fundamental complex but also simple basic fundamental it's only as easy if one has faith in God. And prays withought end. I don't want to be. Fool calling myself a christian then not being one.

Philosopher, Alan Watts, likened self conscious awareness to a sonar system to warn us of possible danger in our environment. It notices everything noteworthy (worthy of notice). The price of self conscious awareness is ignorance of all that’s not noticed-filtered out. Trouble comes with identifying the self with this warning system-lots of negativity. This self-on-self reflection, if too tight and close in, can form a feedback loop, like when a camera is facing its monitor, with reverberations of anxiety and frustration (note: suffering…”dukkah”…in the first of four Nobel Truths of Buddhism). As Watts points out, the self cannot be the direct object of its own experience. No more, say, than a tongue can taste itself or a finger can touch itself. The self can only know itself in relationship with all that’s ‘other than’ its self. I know me only because of you, and vice versa.

As an athiest, your comment made me think that perhaps, our ancestors were far more advanced in certain things than we currently are... For ex. Comparing the advanced understanding of what makes a human happy (like the bible), and the lost knowledge that created pyramids in egypt. Just random things popping up in modern times that point and back up the idea that revolutionary knowledge was lost through time...

I don’t quite understand. When I think about what makes others happy, when I try to make others happy, I see that I can’t be myself for that. Especially not when I’m surrounded by people who need self-deception to be happy. I cannot lie to achieve that goal, but instead keep silent or avoid critical issues. However, I had not had much time to question the video, it makes me happy to see others happy, so far it is all right from the principle. I thought only today about a problem, which I think I see in my closest environment. Namely, the problem that a certain person must first be made happy in order to allow me to become happy. If I am happy at first, then that makes that person unhappy and an automatic happens that aims to make me unhappy. Anyway, the principle only works if someone can share joy? I am quite sure that I myself am on both sides, depending on the situation. But the main problem seems to be in most cases to be found in self-deception. Anyway, the video fits the current situation, it’s about me and the other person’s being somewhat happy. But we’re on completely different sides, if you can put it that way, the idea of life is like fire and water. Others also play a role and I’m the outsider, so I don’t have much backing with my way. While the desire to make others happy prevails among them, only their method to reach the goal is the pleasant lie. They support self-deception.

I have a sort of solution for this kind of situational dynamic. First you have to accept that someone is the way they are. If that's hard you can force your ego into doing it by making it a perceptualy superior position. As if the person you're dealing with is an ignorant child. But with that you have to counter the arrogance that comes from such a perception, so you have to also realize that you too are an ignorant child in your own ways. (that can lead to a collapse of the dynamics we're trying to build here if you conflate this realization with "lowering yourself", then people allow themselves to act out ") Then you can get past what you think they think makes them happy and get to doing simple things that add up over time. Do some dishes, fix something, complement their work, whatever. Do it with the intent of making things better with no expectation forced, meaning you can't push for "thank you"s and you can't *make* them be happy. Then find happiness in the persuit of happiness. "it's about the journey, not the destination" kinda thing. I experienced so many other paths of thought but this is what I was able to write down lol

I think that perhaps what you're talking about is a person who is self-focused, and therefore experiences a lot of negative emotion, and so feels the need to lie to his or herself in order to trick him or herself into being temporarily happy. You, of course, cannot do anything about that directly. Your goal in seeking to help him or her be happy would not be to be enable bad habits, nor to try to help him or her change the habits that bring those negative emotions around. Your fucus has to be completely on what you can do for him or her, regardless of what does or doesn't happen to you in return. Give hugs and smiles, give meaningful gifts, give a listening ear, give a plate of a favorite food, give a compliment, give a vacuumed floor, give something they enjoy, and let them know you gave because you genuinely wanted to give. Someone else's self-perception doesn't mean you can't seek to do those little things that can add up to a mountain of positive feeling.

But only after many unfinished thoughts, thank you. ;) It’s all so incredibly hard, you have to constantly pay attention to your ego and focus on a goal that your ego doesn’t like. Even if you are aware of the fact that in the end it will also benefit you, there is still resistance. The problem with the ignorant child is actually the problem here, only the child is decades older. Anyway, I’m just thinking about something that came from philosophers last year. I can’t remember if it was a book or a general discussion. Anyway, the theme was "childish society". Anyway, you’re right, I have to keep an eye on this for myself and in some cases I’m no different, although I’m not as bad as I was 20 years ago. Therefore, I should not make the mistake of believing that I am now free of it, I have not really noticed it anymore. In any case, I often notice that I get angry when I try to defuse the situation, but there is not the same will from the other side. It’s all bullshit. I am too often angry because my position, my needs are not seen. I can explain them so many times, they just go unnoticed and so I attack, react my anger. What am I supposed to say, children do that too, but from when is anger justified? While justification is all about being at peace with one’s own behaviour, it’s a different issue when it comes to the direction of objectives. It’s all so fucking complicated.

@@svenboelling5251 The anger is essential by its own existence. It's an expression of your mental state (I think of it as a program running on biological hardware, where the hardware is also assembled as it's own "dimension" of code). It's a human tool, but you gotta use it properly or else it can cause more bad than good (THAT I think is the difference between a childs anger and an adults, and I mean adult not the child society version of an adult. A difference in definition that arises as a justification for actions rather than a description of how one deals with the world in a proper way) Like, you don't want a relationship with someone where they only do what you want out of fear, but if they *never* do what you want then getting angry will at least trigger them into listening. But stay angry too far into it and the fear response takes them over and anything will be said by the individual you're confronting inorder to avoid your potential violence. It's a balancing act that I believe you must allow your subconscious mind to do for you. Actually that's my biggest theory I keep thinking about here. @@FebbieG These solutions are theoretically possible, but practically it fails because of the programmed behavior that has eaten into my soul for over 40 years. In this case, I've been used to it since I was little that compliments and all that were never really meant to be truthful, but were only given because you have to give something like that to make someone feel good. One hand washes the other among self-deceivers. I can't do it myself because I've always hated it. Even if I find it helps others, I can't. It took me decades to figure out the reason I can't take compliments and the ones who need compliments now are so old I don't think I'll be able to fix the problem in their lifetime. It's also a horror to know the problems and have a rough idea of ​​how long it's going to take to solve them, while at the same time there's the realization that those you want to show the result to are long gone at that point and all those things that become a problem. The mere certainty that these problems must be denied by others until the end of their lives. Anyway, I think life must be about making sure the next generation is a better one. Blaming others now probably does not serve this goal.

What I learned in life pertaining to this issue is that there's a thin line between self consciousness and being entitled. Being entitled is when one selfishly think of themselves and what they deserve while self awareness is being aware of how one affect other people's lives how much compasion, tolerance, and comprehension on others do they practice in other words.more of being humane than being percieved as "The Superior Species"

What if I’m not happy because I’m unmarried with no kids.

Or even a better idea, learn to observe or be aware of your negative thougts escpecially when you are feeling depressed/sad. Test yourself to not react to every thought you get and instead observe them. You will realize that most of your thinking is absolut useless and doesn’t make you progress in life. Remember this, thinking = suffering every time you feel overwhelmed with negative thougts.

@Lily R All my life I have put others before myself and did what I could to make others happy and all it has done is drain me and gotten me taken advantage of and used and abused emotionally. For 18 years I did everything to make my wife happy based on what she wanted from me to be happy and all it did was make me greatly miserable and cost me a nervous breakdown when she stepped out of the marriage for the last time.

i think about others constantly...my boss is an asshat, my coworker is married to a sex offender, my nephew has autism, my other boss is a micromanager. Still makes me stressed and prone to negative thoughts and violence..

Well of course you feel this way twords all of the stressful people in your life. Find someone who is stable. Even if it is a cat or dog. Or your local barista. Balance out that dysfunction and take care of yourself. You need to take care of and guard your own mind or others dysfunctional ways(and family members who have special needs)stress will cause you to lose sight of who you are. ❤

That's because it's easy to compare yourself to others that are doing better than you since everyone has their own personal insecurities. Pickup artists have actually desensitized themselves to this in some sense by constantly approaching random girls and then getting rejected so that the pain associated with that gradually subsides, ultimately making you less self-concious.

I thought for some time that Dr. Peterson was often playing upon Emerson's "Self-Reliance" themes, and he does to some extent, but Emerson seems to make clear that he's willing to forsake even familial obligations to throw off the shackles of Custom, which he considered one of the great enemies to any person from being truly themselves- a truly free soul. If you aren't willing to sacrifice such obligations, what possible lasting good can we be to others? Peterson forces the moral weighty side of familial ties because he ultimately doesn't believe much in the risks that are inherent with Emerson's dictum of a true "self-reliance."

Why is it called being self-conscious when it's not really about being self conscious? What Dr is describing sounds like being self centered/only thinking about yourself. Being self conscious would simply mean you are conscious of yourself, that you exist, how you exist, how you feel etc. I think that's a good thing. You dont wanna lose sight of how you're actually doing. Being self aware and being self conscious seem like two names for the same stuff to me though apparently self conscious has a different meaning AGAIN which i do not understand because it's a bad use of the word conscious imo. feel free to disagree i'd love to see in the reply bye bye

Jordan, this is terrible advice for some people. Psychology is not all universal. There are typological, cultural and individual layers as well. Strictly from a typological perspective, your advice is the OPPOSITE of what should be done by an ENORMOUS number of people. You need to become better versed in the typological aspects of psychology. The Big 5 is useful, but is blinding you to greater truths.
