Keep in mind Black and Decker and DeWalt are the same company. The Dewalt brand was revised in the 90s to design and market to the more professional and demanding user. The company is Stanley Black and Decker, which owns a number of brands including Porter Cable, and now Craftsman. Manufacturing of some of these brands is done by various OEM manufactures for the brand. This was a great overview. Thanks!

Recently saw a guy make several cuts through an 6x6 beam with that B&D saw using a 10” Bosch blade. I laughed when I saw the B&D saw come out, and honestly expected it to catch fire lol. Took a while, but he did the cuts without any fuss from the saw what so ever. And honestly… that is bananas performance from a $35 jigsaw.

Wondering if the blade lock fully engaged...blade feels secure when I change blade... and still in the lock even with blade outside the guide...?? Your thoughts would be appreciated! You won't regret it. And don't forget, in 1916 Stanley Black & Decker obtained the world's first patent for a portable power tool and also own DeWalt, so I think the company know what they're doing!

Thank you so much for this video. I now know that I really want the DeWalt saw and not the B&D saw because I'd really like to be able to make bevel cuts easily. To have the control for that dependent on a screw that strips as easily as the B&D one is not something I want to mess with.

Steve Ramsey recommends the Black & Decker in this Woodworking for Mere Mortals. It is nice to see another very knowledgeable source go into such detail to support an affordable product. Great review.

DeWalt also has a barrel-grip model. Choosing between the d-grip and barrel is one of personal ergonomic feel, but it's good to have that choice. Another factor to consider is that if you do go cordless, you're generally going to want to plan it around what battery system you want to buy tools in long-term, not just one or two tools.

Very informative video👌🏽 The only thing that would have made it even better is a birds eye view/ workers point of view from above, to see how much the wire guard obstructs the view and how far you have to lean over to see the cutting area.

I’m just a home maintenance kind of guy and I always choose Ryobi… right in between the DeWalt and B&D in terms of pricing and performance, they’re super durable, supported by Home Depot, their batteries fit into about 200 different tools, plus the fluorescent green they come in make them very easy to keep track of in a project area👍

Yeah once you buy any battery packs, it's not practical to buy any other tools that don't use the same batteries. I used an older model of this Black & Decker JS250 for years to cutout signs on plywood. Now I don't have a need for one, but it really depends on what someone can afford for this project. Not everyone can afford festool ofcourse. But the Milwaukee jigsaws are very good but still more expensive than a lot of people might need. Bottom line, I would hesitate to use a jigsaw on anything that your circular saw can't manage. Which is basically just making scroll cuts.

I got a Black and Decker and I was proud of saving money for little jobs around the home. It broke after a couple of use. May be I was harsh with it, although I was much harsher with the Bosch (Once I broke a blade on it). I tried to fix the Black and Decker before borrowing the Bosch. I opened it up and saw that some parts are moved a bit around! I put them back into their place and it worked for another two minutes and then it broke again. So if you are rich enough to buy Black and Decker, Good luck! That was my experience.

My dad's 1967's cheap Black & Decker J saw out last his lifetime.

I've had a Bosch electric barrel style for about 10 years and I hate it. Now that I have 5 or 6 Dewalt 20v tools this was a no brainer. Works great.

About scratch the screw for B&D.. is it will effect the efficiency of the machine later?

Good video, many tools are just not up to being cordless yet, a drill is awesome cordless, a circular saw not so much. A jigsaw is somewhere inbetween in the torque needed so was wondering if cordless was worth paying way more for. Good point about the gaurds and which one allows you to see the cut your making easily, so important and is a deal breaker for any tool but especially a jigsaw where small movements translate to large deviations. So is one that blows the dust away instead of dumping it all over your cut line.

On the dewalt in regards to vacuum, you can purchase an dust shroud adaptor and connect your vacuum. This helps when cutting counter tops.

Looked at B&D featured in this review and bought Wen 33606 for about $8 more. Has a work LED and a laser cut guide, edge guide, vacuum port and dust blower, and blades (2). Shoe has a plastic no-scuff cover, and the bevel adjustment is secured by a hex bolt, not a screw. First use confirmed it doesn’t vibrate like my old HF. Tracked very well. Happy with the purchase.

Thank you. The best one to start is the B&D. While I don’t dispute that I love the Dewalt for its versatility and the speed it takes from “thinking of using it to having it all setup and ready to cut”. B&D requires a little more setup time.

I have the exact same Dewalt in the UK its the DCS334N, although quite expensive i have other cordless Dewalt so makes sense to use all my Dewalt batteries ,this jigsaw is pure class and very manoeverable.Another point is that every part on the Dewalt is replaceable.Residual value also is premium on the Dewalt.

I had to replace my old NiCad drill last year.. and and very pleased I spent NZ$99/us 70 on an 18v B&D drill/driver. Perfect for my home based needs. I have beside me a 7 yr old Kawasaki jigsaw,,, 570w .. 18mm stroke and up to 3000cpm.... got it cashing in shopping coupons :-)) .. not my most used too,,,much prefer a well maintained bandsaw but def does the job....from NZ

Could try rubbing some candlewax or beeswax on the metal base to make it easier to move and reduce scuffing. The plastic can still scratch ply surface. Orbital and bevel rarely used but may be worth trying it for mitre cuts.

this is a great demo of two tools with obvious and not so obvious pros and cons. Price comparison is a big factor when choosing battery or wired tools in my case. I'm not interested in getting stuck in a brand because im sunk on batteries. Great review!

More expensive tools are almost always a more satisfactory experience. The rub is this, if you don't need to use the tool often, the less expensive tool makes more sense (cents), use the savings on another piece of gear you need. I would go with the B&D.

The 90 degree precision is a vet important consideration that was missed out of this video. I own a Jigsaw that I have to check is square before each use due to slack in the design.

I have the Dewalt. It make really clean cuts. I came from the very expensive hobby of photography. So spending $200 on a Sale also getting a battery and charger free seemed cheap for a quality tool. AS a home DIYer it should last a lifetime. But you also have the Bauer line at Harbour Freight. I find that the older you get, the less you want to mess around with "beginner" quality power tools.

Great video, the BD jigsaws are the best value in power tools I would argue.

Informative video with comparison. I'd go with B And D. By the way was the stroke depth with the default able to be faster than BD?

You are correct - Dewalt is a little faster. But if it’s not a tool for your daily work, the BD will get the job done (even though it might be a little slower).

Great video honest and perfect advice for beginner woodworkers :D like me ..

Some complaints I have seen about different jigsaws (including the B&D) is the blade is not at 90 degrees and therefore unable to make flush cuts. In the video both of these appear not at 90 degree. Is this really an issue, or I guess only an issue if you are trying to make flush cuts.

yes great review thank you... i own a black n decker curve control I only use it for small jobs and does the job for me :) in another review I saw that it can use both T and U blades and in Canada it sells for 55$ plus tax.. Oh Canada!

What does it look like? May be a way around this problem. However even premium brands can have this problem when it comes to parts.

Oh I think I understand about the scratches on the screw.. later on we cannot open or tight the screw, yes? So meaning we only have to use it for 90 degrees cut? 😢

I am not in the market for one as I have one that keeps on ticking, But I agree it is a great tool to have in the shop.

10:10 this is the best thing. I can see the line of cutting. from here of position of camera I can see very well [black and Decker] I don't know why Dewalt not focus on this point!

Some tools are much better without a cord, and some don't matter much. My favorite corded/cordless example is the leaf blower, where you are constantly dragging the cord around a large area and knocking it into piles of leaves. A palm sander, by contrast, might as well have a cord. Because the jigsaw often cuts complete shapes all the way around, the battery is a clear benefit.

I have the B&D in the corded version. Unfortunately the blade deflection is pretty bad on material over 1/4 inch. It drives me crazy at times. Thinking of upgrading to a better performance model, DeWalt or Milwaukee just for the better blade guidance

Do you push too hard on the jigsaw? If so, sometimes too much pressure will skew the blade to one side. Also the quality and thickness of the blade makes a huge difference, a thin and poorly sharpened blade will struggle whereas a thick, quality double cut blade will power through even thick wood. I prefer downcut blades for accuracy and less splintering to the faceside of the wood too. A phrase I always heard years ago was 'Let the tool do the work'.

I just picked up a 20 year old Milwaukee jigsaw made in Germany brand new in the original Box for 60 bucks.

Thanks for a nicely balanced and thorough review. But, can I suggest you change your dark table and dark clothing? Your camera cannot cope with the deep shadows. Few cameras can. Try it once with neutral grey clothes and table cover. [Just like your studio background] You'll never go back to black. I positively guarantee it. ;-)
