Cutting straight lines with a jigsaw using the router method
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This video shows how to cut a straight line with a jigsaw by applying how a router works. In general, it is very difficult to cut an exact straight line using only a jigsaw. However, if you attach the newly manufactured jig to the jigsaw, you can cut straight lines without difficulty

Wouldn't it be easier to just clamp a straight edge to the workpiece and use that as a guide? The method in the video essentially does the same thing, but with the added step of screwing a piece of wood to the jigsaw.

I think theres a good chance that the jigsaw could wear out the edge or cut straight through in that case. I can see why this method is better long-term since it doesnt wear out the straight edge after repeated uses.

your idea has one benefit: you can cut thicker pieces. THOUGH: it's not so immediate to place the "guide rail" at the perfect distance. It's easy, but not as immediate as this method reaches
@newmonengineering

@@marcopinchetti5872 the way I do it is by using guide blocks. Basically a pair of blocks that define the distance from the guide to the line. It's fast to set up and you can always use a metal guide like a t track if you are concerned about wear. But if you are doing a lot of them it can become time consuming in comparison to this method

Not to mention the added distance between the machine and the workpiece, allowing the blade to bend a little when it follows the grain of the wood. with the machine on the workpiece itself, the blade cannot bend that far, allowing for more precise cuts.Also, wood against wood gives more friction instead of metal against wood.

Better to use the right tool for the right job. But if you have nothing else, I guess this can work as a permanent workaround if you not planning use the jigsaw for something else. Can also just use a guide and clamp as usual instead of fixing wood to the jigsaw which you will need to remove again when using it as intended. The ideal tool will be a circular saw and will give a much more desirable finish. Jigsaw is better for odd shapes, curves and tight corners in my opinion.

I think this is a nice idea for when cutting close to the edge of a board, where the sole plate might wobble, otherwise a clamped straight edge will do the same when the base is fully supported.

In my experience, a straight edge makes the cut not really straight, since the blade tends to wobble if the saw itself can't move freely.

Even using a straight edge you won't get a perfect finish with a jigsaw - circular saw better- or this jig looks good !
@tomaspisecky4835

Jfyi this is still straight edge, just against different face, so both will have same result. Yes cheap low quality blades flex and not cutting straight, good blades give good cuts (but they tend to snap as they are usually hardened thus more brittle)
Neat idea! Thought about the same thing a few days ago, as whenever i cut, i have to work out the inconsistencies later, getting tired of it, wasting time.
The black plastic guard that is on the bottom of the jigsaw...actually has square and parallel sides. Put a straight edge on the top of your timber and use it instead. Good brands state on them how wide they are between the edge and jigsaw edge.

If you use templates this works with almost every shape, including guitars. This is actually a very common and straightforward method. But if you want something straight, a chisel or a plane would also do a fine job, just takes more skill and time.

🙃🥴The irony of this video is that you need advanced power tools, like a table saw, to create a jig for making straight cuts with a jigsaw. However, if beginners had access to those advanced tools, they would likely choose to use them instead of a jigsaw for this specific task.
@liam314

You could use the factory edge of a sheet of plywood to make this. That way you would not have to make any accurate cuts to make this jig. But you make a fair point. This is always the problem with these types of yt videos, "excuse me while I whip out my perfectly set up table saw to make a jig for cutting straight lines!" ;) Anyway, I will try to make this using only a jigsaw and a cordless drill

Much better than the saw guide cutting through the centre that I tried. Straight edge is of course another piece of ply.👍👍👍

Circular saws wobble but the saw kerf is consistent. When used with a fence, wobble will produce a kerf wider than the blade, but it won't produce a wandering cut like a saber saw. The angle of the blade to the work does not vary in a circular saw. It varies quite a bit, and unpredictably, in a saber saw.
A clever idea for specific purposes. Neat! Happy building and staying busy. Northern Michigan here by the way. 😁

It's a complete waste of time, did you see he clamped the straight piece of wood to the wood he was cutting? All he had to do was move it over to allow the blade to cut on the line he wanted to cut and just keep the base of the jigsaw tight to the clamped wood, he would have had the exact same outcome without going through all the wasted time attaching a piece of wood to his jigsaw.

I love the bit where you need a table saw to get the straight cut on the guide you need for a tool thats not the best option, still have to clamp straight edge to your work, and will still probably get a wonky edge because it's a jig saw. 😂 Either cut with a jig saw and use the router to get the edge you want, or cut with the damn table saw
