Seized/Broken Subaru Vehicle Speed Sensor
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Video on early Subaru models equipped with 5 speed manual transmission. Vehicle speed sensor is mounted on the passenger side transmission case.
Quite commonly the plastic 17mm sensor will strip or break. I had trouble finding solid information what to do after the top half broke off. I read many posts on forums that separating the case halves was the next step, I wanted to submit this info to help the community out if possible.
Check out my channel as well to see my GC8 swap.
Thanks for watching!

This video was very good for me. Had to put a 99STi box into a 95 jdm, was very worried about the speed sensor vs cable. Found this video and it gave enough knowledge and confidence to break the plastic unit apart, I used some heat to release the threaded part from the box, a vacuum, and small picks to clean the thread and all good, installed the cable system right in. Cheers!!
I was able to remove the sensor with the Transmission in place on a 2002 Outback. Access is from underneath the vehicle. The 17 mm does fit too loose and strips the sensor housing. I suspect they manufacture it that way so it can not be installed too tightly thus breaking the sensor. Got it out with a pair of vise grip pliers and the use of a heat gun directed at the sensor base.

I broke off the top of the sensor enough to hammer on a socket and then used an impact to get it out. It's virtually impossible to get out with traditional stubby or crows foot wrenches because it just rounds off and slips. I did this above the car on my 2005 STI after removing the TMIC.

There isn't much room to remove the speed sensor when the transmission is installed. You will probably need to lower your transmission. I had to use vise grips to remove it.

Break the sensor as far down as you can and hammer on a socket or a seized lug nut tool, then use an impact. If that method doesn't work, try breaking it the way this video suggests. Source: 2005 STI.
I have the same code with my 2006 Legacy 5MT. but doesn't have the sensor on transmission. Would that indicate a wheel speed sensor?
@petrol-bay6928

It could be wheel speed sensor issues or sometimes the ABS module itself, good luck!

Very late comment but I need help, my 2011 Wrx hatch has a harness coming out of the vss, the other side of that harness was pulled out *im assuming the previous owner dropped the trans without unplugging it* & now I can’t find where the other connection to that harness is located? I’ve searched everywhere and don’t see where it can possibly be plugged in, I’ve even checked the rear 02 wire harness that it connects to and nothing. I’m stumped because where can that harness lead to?

Hello @GoldEj25, to clarify things - you are saying the connector is still plugged into the the vehicle speed sensor but you don't know where the rest of it is routed?
@Owensti
6 ай бұрын
@petrol-bay6928 Correct! The Connector is still plugged into the vss, and the other side is torn. Right now I have the intercooler off trying to see if I can spot the other end of the harness and nothing. There’s no info online and the Subaru dealer don’t have clear schematics of it. I’ve cut open the harness that’s just above the turbo that goes into the firewall trying to see any cut wires or stripped wires and nothing. Followed the wires down the other 2 sensors on the other side of the trans and nothing. This one has me stumped.

@petrol-bay6928

The flat piece of metal is part of the sensor, not the manual transmission. When you look into the transmission hole you should have the empty slot that the sensor will fit into. If that doesn't help you I can try to find some pictures for you.
