Seiko SLA043 versus Tudor BB58

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ever since I purchased the Seiko SLA043J and the Tudor BB58, so many of my viewers have been asking for me to do a comparison video, so I listened and here it is..
The Seiko costs around the $7000 AUD mark whereas the Tudor comes in at $5150 AUD
Let me know you thoughts on both watches
Thanks for watching..
cheers

The SLA043... I have owned it since November of last year and I still don't know how to properly describe this watch. Timeless would be, perhaps, the only one. The quality of manufacture and finishing is unbelievable, it is, at the same time, vintage and modern. Vintage because of its look and modern because it passed through the hands of Grand Seiko... And that changes absolutely EVERYTHING. It is necessary to have had it on your wrist to realize that it is an exceptional watch and you, Peter, knew very well how to speak about it with accuracy. Congratulations!

It's hard to take any variation of the "I wouldn't pay that much for a Seiko" comment seriously. Remove the snobbery and status-symbol mentality and you're left with a completely hand-built watch with real history powered by a completely hand-built, in-house movement, and a case/dial that's finished (again, by hand) to such a level that it requires a macro-lens to fully appreciate, all done by a watchmaker that's been at the forefront of horology since the 1800s. Anyone who thinks $4500 (US) retail seems overpriced compared to the Swiss brands seems less concerned about the quality of the watch and more concerned with what other people think of the the logo that's on the dial.

I have the BB58 in black with bracelet. I went to the nearest AD and it was the last one available. The salesman offered me some coffee in longines cups and we talked about watches for 2 hours. The best experience I had in a shop in a long time. This experience contributes how I enjoy wearing this amazing watch.

@@marcd7332 very true. I’ve had three out of three fail horribly. Won’t buy another one. For Japanese brands, Casio is my go to. My F-91w… flawless. My mudmaster, an engineering marvel. My edifice, tough solar with all the features I need. Seconds hand hits the markers perfectly every time, all the time. Pete, it really just makes me happy, that your were able to connect, with not 1, but 2 different watches, in a meaningful enough way, that at this point in your collecting journey, you don't see yourself getting rid, of either of them. That's a great feeling, that only another watch enthusiast, truly understands. I love blue dials. I have more blue dialed watches in my collection, than any other color, by far. To the point, that I've had to make an active attempt, to acquire, dials of different color, simply for variety sake. I'm just drawn to them, as blue has always been, my favorite color. My first watch, when i was a little boy, was blue, and my first "real watch purchase," had a blue dial. I got married w/ a blue dialed watch on my wrist, and a blue dialed watch, is what first drew me into becoming a "serious collector." Until watching this video, (by sheer chance, just because I love your work) I had never even considered, how many important connections I've had, w/ blue dialed watches. Life's a mystery, but at this point, IDT, that there's any other way that I could go out, (knowing what I know now) than w/ a blue dialed watch, on my wrist. Thanks a lot. I really enjoyed this one. Cheers....

Great upload Pete. It made me realise that the emotive connection we have to our watches doesn't get enough play on YT (though I guess Adrian at B & J does it well...). It's odd how the price and/or prestige of a watch often looses its importance once it's settled into our collection. My Champagne Alpinist (which I wear on an after market jangly jubilee) is *by far* my favourite watch. It's pretty humble but has its own inexplicable magic - though my Lorier Hyperion (which I've only owned for a few months) is hot on its heels! Another flawed and humble but utterly beguiling watch... And then - perhaps like your Tudor? - there are watches like my Certina DS PH200M that are special for other, more personal reasons. I *adore* the watch. I also thought long and hard and I took my time with the purchase. What drew me to it was my late uncle, an ex UDT Diver and career officer in the Australian Navy. He had an issued Certina DS-3. When my Certina finally arrived in the mail from the US I felt more... satisfied. And almost proud. Not that usual 'let me at it' excitement! And the watch is still special to me in a way that differs from the pieces I reach for more frequently, even after a good few years. The 'why I bought it and how I feel about it now' watch stories are a great part of our hobby I reckon. Cheers mate.

Great video Peter. I have to say that I also find the Seiko so much more attractive than the low key Tudor. Proportions, dial and color scheme combined with that exceptional crystal and overall finish just makes it absolutely stunning. A true winner that one. I just purchased the Yema Superman Skin Diver model and while it's of course not up to the standard of the Seiko, it overdelivers in giving that feeling of something really unique that's hard to stop looking at. I doesn't seem very popular but to me it's fantastic which is all that matters. It really seems to have a soul.

The BB58 is an incredible watch and easily my personal favorite at the moment. The details and subtleties are for me. The way the blue changes in lighting conditions how the hands catch the sun, etc. Proportions are perfect for my wrist and the heritage of the watch make me feel warm inside. That’s just me. Great watches. My three would be Black Bay Heritage Red Cosc, Bell and Ross Sq Diver, and the Tuna. Love all three. Was inclined to put on my Willard re-issue in the slate gray, but your vid compelled me to throw on the Tuna. Your close-up of it. I had forgot. And the close-up of the SLA, yeah it’s so stunningly finished. I think people see the Tudor, but it is so understated, it almost says, “notice, but don’t notice it to me,” in a very conspicuous sort of way. Like the time I noticed Dennis Hopper while out with his girlfriend and was about to approach him, and he just gave me this look, “don’t even.” I got it. I think the unassuming see the Tudor but have reverence for it and it’s wearer. Though I know while waiting in line for the MoonSwatch, this kid had on this bng 58 that I just caught a glimpse of after we had been talking off and on, and I was like, “wow, what are you wearing?!” First time I had seen it in person, and just blew me away.

Excellent video. I appreciate how you have gone about assigning a value rating for each one - based on how each watch appeals to you. I have the Tudor BB 58 Blue. What I particularly love about it is the specific choices that Tudor has made in determining all of the variables that define what the watch is. Materials. Size / scaling / positioning. Colors (dial and bezel combination is a home run.) Case shape and finishes. Bracelet design, materials, construction. Movement. Etc... To a studied eye - the Tudor is a work of art. When you factor in the quality of the movement and then the price - amazing offering. I do like the Seiko - especially based on this review - but it to me is a completely different type of watch.

Why are they "a completely different type of watch"? They're both vintage-inspired divers under 40mm form two very respectable brands that in the real world cost and perform about the same. I think it's actually hard to find two watches form different brands that are more comparable than these. Both are great, but if one of these should earn the praise "work of art" for me it surely would be the Seiko.

I have narrowed it down to an SLA051, BB58 or Omega Seamaster 300M. The ‘respectful’ feeling I get when I try on the Tudor and Omega in my AD is there for sure. I bought my SLA017 back in 2017, it was the first Seiko re-issue of the 62MAS and truest to the original that I fell in love with as soon as I saw the announcement and pictures on the internet. Btw, I get the fascination with the Tuna. I love the design and have owned several. It's such a cool, unique, and eye catching design. I keep coming back to it... Must have gone through at least 6 different incarnations of the tuna design. I've been looking for the perfect one. That being said, I'm not sure if I've found the perfect one? But, I just ordered a new tuna as it seems to have spoken to me having seen it in person for first time at the Worn & Wound Wind-Up in San Francisco. I can wear and enjoy the full size quartz tunas at about 47mm. Always said it's the best smallest wearing 47mm watch ever. But, I really think the perfect size for me is the new 43mm ones with automatic movements. That's what I recently picked up again. Looking forward to seeing if this is THE tuna for me. Btw, it's the SRPG59 Save the Ocean Antarctic Edition.

However, my daily is that blue 58 on bracelet and it’s been my favorite watch that I’ve ever owned. However in the watch community I’ve noticed a preference for more understated, tool-like looking divers like the Tudor. Personally I find them dull but maybe they grow on you over time. PS Maybe a “dial finishing”category would have been good as well as a “case finishing” one?

I always enjoyed the BB58, but the Seiko made me feel something completely different and the Tudor was gone. A few weeks ago I went to my authorized dealer and they had the 925. I swore I wasn't going to buy another BB58, but I immediately fell for this watch. The dial color struck me and of course I was intrigued by a silver case. I feel like these two can coexist in my collection now much better than the standard BB58

Love the Seiko. For whatever reasons, Swiss watches have never grabbed my attention. Could also be the sales person selling me the watch, if I spot a fashion victim or nose in the air, I walk the other way. I always feel comfortable when I walk into a Seiko store, even in the heart of Ginza. Funny, being a creative director and starting out as a typographer, what got me interested in watches in the first place was the Kanji date only found on Japanese watches. Having studied design in Switzerland many years ago, Swiss architecture and culture is amazing.

Same as you. However due to my ‘inverse snobbery’ I’m wondering whether I’m overlooking some Swiss watches. However , I feel you’re paying over the odds for many Swiss brands (Oris included). However some Tudor watches do offer good bang per buck but I just don’t like the look of them.

Great video. I can really tell you love the Seiko, it is fabulous looker. I broke one of my watches fiddling with the movement when I should have left well alone. I loved that watch so much that I bought it again. Would I buy it again? is the question I now ask myself with any new watch I get after having given it a decent amount of wrist time. If I haven't managed to connect to such a degree, I move it on. I generally loose money but not as much as if I keep a watch I'm not going to wear and enjoy.

Great review! I've owned both. Sold the Tudor. The Tudor is a nice watch, the Seiko is a special watch. The Seiko has a better movement, better case, better lume, better bezel (smooooth!), better crystal, a date. The Tudor is a good-looking watch, the Seiko is a beautiful watch. Totally with you that the Seiko has soul. The Tudor has a bracelet.

First, thanks for a fine video. I now own both watches and think you got it right overall. I own the BB58 and think that it is one of the best all-around watches I own. Presence, accuracy, heritage, dial, lume, bracelet are all outstanding. I recently scored an unworn SLA043 for well under half of list, so I grabbed it. Glad I did. As you note, they are different watches with different strengths and different heritages. The Seiko is brilliant, but the OEM straps that it comes with are uninspiring and the lack of regulation is disappointing. But both of these deficiencies can be fixed -- and the result is a dazzling watch. At the end of the day, I would not dispute your scores, even if my own might be slightly different (and in fairness, I have not had as much wrist time with the Seiko as you have). Thanks again for a fine comparison.

In the last couple of days I just happened to come across both of these two watches, pre-owned, in like new condition, for almost the exact same price. I love both of them, but I opted for the Seiko for two reasons: the finishing and secondly, because it's a limited edition it's going to always be hard to get. Whereas the Tudor will always be available for the near future. As an aside, I think the SLA is near the bottom of the trough in value and will likely only be getting harder to find for a good price.

I've owned a bb58 and currently own the sla and I think you're spot on with your comparison. Something about the Sla feels like a more dynamic piece. Weirdly enough the Seiko feels more like a stunner and the Tudor is more toolish. You'd think it would be the opposite

I’ve had nearly the same experience, but I kept both. The seiko does have a dynamic feel that makes the BB58 feel a little sterile. But, the bracelet and how well the BB58 sits low on the wrist make it a keeper for me. The Seiko sits a tad too high to disappear on the wrist the same way. Lucky to have them both and glad I took the leap on such a pricey seiko.

I completely understand what you meant by the Tudor being easy to scratch and the Seiko not. I have had the same experience with my Swiss watches as well. I believe it comes down to the Japanese coating their watches with anti-scratch substances while the Swiss don't. Great comparison! I too reach for my SBBN031 more often than my other more expensive watches and connect with it more.

@@watchouch it’s the same steel that Rolex uses on the sub, OP, explorers and gmt. It looks whiter and has more luster and is harder. It’s not magic or some rare or expensive alloy. It’s just a slightly different alloy that is probably better for watches long term but at the expense of more wear on tooling and slower production.

Really interesting observation on how easily some watches scratch. If the same material is used without any hardening or coatings, shouldn't this be the same? So what makes this difference here? Because stainless steel still scratches easily I have grown really interested in hardening techniques or potentially different alloys, yet all I own is stainless so far. For me, on screen, between these two the Seiko just seems more loveable. There is an instant visual interest that despite the signature handsets, the Tudor just lacks. I think it has also something to do with the blue tone. The Seiko's is darker or more saturated which just appeals more. The Seiko seems desirable even if it's not really my genre and I doubt I'd personally wear it often. That said, I'd like to try it!

Nice review of these watches but there are certain elements in your "list of criteria" that needs to be held up higher when you give a numerical rating. For example I believe the movement should have a much higher ranking than strap changes. I also believe that wearability and value for money are bigger factors to consider. If you gave a higher ranking to these elements the Tudor would be up a bit over the Seiko. Having stated all of this I certainly can see how you feel so strongly about the Seiko. To me the Seiko looks to be better looking watch and one I'd love to have on my wrist!

You harkened on the soul of the Seiko but for the reasons I mentioned, the OG BB58, to me, has a huge soul. The blue BB58 is very sterile in comparison. Maybe that also makes it easier to wear the OG through everything and appreciate its wear and tear whereas the blue one may want to keep pristine

2:17 This has been my exact experience with the BB58. It's dull, flat, simple, plain, and just overall boring design does absolutely nothing for me. It's like I feel dead inside when I put it on LOL. But then I'll put on my Breitling SuperOcean 42 Blue or my Tudor Chrono BB Panda and I'm an ecstatic kid in a candy store again. I've tried really hard to force myself to like the BB58. Simply because it's such killer value for what you're getting. On paper, it's practically a perfect watch. It has the absolute perfect dimensions imho, it has an inhouse movement, great balanced weight, very respectable brand and heritage, very safe and versatile design that will pair with any outfit, great lume, great accuracy, etc. And yet, every time that I've put it on my wrist in my AD, it does absolutely nothing for me. Flat response. No excitement. A lot of my Seikos give me much more excitement than the BB58 as well (e.g. SNA413, SNA411, SARB033/35). I think it could be the perfect symmetry of the BB58 and the simple/plain design that I just find very muted. It doesnt have that unique quirk or flair that every watch should have which gives it a certain identity or charm. I dont really know how to explain it. You would think that I would find the Tudor Chrono BB Panda boring since I find the BB58 boring but it's quite the opposite. The white cream ivory dial, the top red dipped chrono seconds hands that lines up perfectly with the tachymeter bezel, the panda color way with it's subdials, the big bulbous chrono pushers, etc all give it enough flair that gets me excited to put it on all the time. At the end of the day though, the BB58 is an almost perfect watch at an incredible value and I would argue that it wears better than the aforementioned pieces for most people. I am jealous of all the people that get excitement when they slap it on their wrist.

That’s what makes collecting fun! We all like different things! Some people need a flashier and a larger watch with tons of wrist presence, so I can understand that, as I used to be that way. Especially if you’re used to large watches like the Superocean and the Tudor BB chrono, then that would make it tough to adjust to a sport watch like the 58. The beauty of the 58 is that it is a classic, subtle design with on wrist comfort that rivals anything out there, especially any diver out there.
