Segmented Poplar & Wenge Bowl

It's been 3 months since my last turning video and I missed it a lot. This is a fairly simple bowl but it just felt good to be back at the lathe!

    It sure was great to be back doing some woodturning, John. It might be a while before I do another one but at least I got some time at the lathe again. Patenting that segment kicker could be tricky because anyone who takes a brief look at it could make one of their own. It’s kind of like the wedgy sled. Once Jerry Bennett released it, he totally lost control of it. I think, however, he did it because he’s just a generous person. The same might be said of John who invented the segment kicker. Thanks for watching, my friend.

    Hi Gord. Sorry to hear that you have 'been unwell', it seems. I too have been out of circulation with some of my own health problems. When I got over that 'friends' have pestered me to open an Art/Craft stall. That's all well & good but when everything is hand made & you have to think about how you are going to display etc, etc, it takes up an enormous amount of time & on top of that my hands don't work too well these days. This bowl is a welcome delight in my opinion, it is absolutely stunning. The design works SO well, everything about it is a sheer joy to behold & I love Feed n Wax as a finish. Keep improving with your health, Don from South Aust.

    @@GordonRock1 Amazing how quickly skills can weaken, but they do bounce back, quickly. I've been fortunate to have six consecutive days in the shop. All that turning has me feeling very confident. Some precise cuts I made were notable signs in learning something. • @GordonRock1

    @GordonRock1

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello Jean, If I glued the floating disc in all the way around there would be a risk of it expanding due to temperature or humidity changes and that could crack the bowl. By just gluing it in at the end of the grain as I did the disc can expand and 'float' thereby not cracking the bowl. I used solid bottoms glued in completely and had the bowls crack because of that in the past. This method keeps that from happening. I hope I have explained it well enough, Jean. Let me know if I didn't. Thanks for watching! .....Gord

  • @GordonRock1

    @GordonRock1

    Жыл бұрын

    Charlie, I use thicker rings and then use the parting tool to separate them usually giving me 2 rings to use. the top ring is actually two 1/4" rings. • @GordonRock1

    @GordonRock1

    Жыл бұрын

    I have made far to many videos to be able to remember which one I explained the reason for the floating disc, Mike, so let me explain it here. I hope this will make sense. Using a solid bottom on a segmented piece can result in the bowl or hollow form cracking because the solid piece on the bottom can expand quite a bit. By using a floating disc with glue only on the end grain the disc can expand and contract without affecting the bottom ring. That is the reason for leaving the small area around the disc to allow for that expansion and contraction due to temperature and humidity changes. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question. Happy turning, .....Gord
