Sega's First Console games - The Launch Titles of the SG1000

Ойындар

On 15th July 1983 Sega released their first home console: The SG1000.
Launch alongside its technically identical SC3000 computer, the SG1000 was a small success for Sega.
Seven games launched with the console and in this video Dan "The Mega" Driver takes a look at each of them to evaluate how strong that line up was.

The upgrade Sega made from the SG1000 to Master system always reminds me of the leap from the commodore VIC 20 leap to C64. Great video mate👍🏻

Had the chance to buy a boxed SG1000 for 70 quid many years ago, decided against as thought those early games didnt appeal much, but should have definitely grabbed it.

Nice to see these early games given some attention. :) Are you playing these on a Master System by any chance? The Master System's VDP is backwards-compatible but the way it maps the SG-1000's fixed palette to the Master System's variable palette produces pretty garish results, which may account for the "BBC Micro" look you mention!

That's right, capture on an SMS1 via RGB SCART/OSSC. Didn't know that would have an impact on the colours. Thanks for the feedback, I'll be sure to consider next time I cover this generation of Sega systems - Dan

Yeah, Definitely don't recommend playing SG-1000 games on an SMS. The palette remap always looks far worse than the original SG-1000 palette.

I used to love the Master System as a kid... until I tried developing games for that monstrosity and then Good Gravy! Everything must be done in software, and you have just 9,000 instructions performed to do anything. And no DMA Blast Processing nor chunky pixels!

Some great stuff Dan. Out of these I've played other versions of Congo Bongo and N Subs essentially follow up - Submarine Attack on the MK3/MS. Star Jacker is the one I've played a bit of as well. I'm about to be talking about that one in my Saturn Sega Ages vid as it features on the Sega Ages Volume 9 - Memorial Selection volume 2 on the console!

I have a PAL SC3000H. It is great and even supports RGB SCART. It is such an overlooked system there are a lot of games worth playing on it, especially later games. These early ones are a bit rough. Congo Bongo 5/10. Champion Tennis 2/10. N Sub 7/10. Yamato 7/10. Star Jacker 8/10. Cool that you featured this console. Hope you will show more on it. Have a look at the PAL history of it too. The colours look really off in your video. It looks much better on my tv.

Thanks! I'm playing these on a Master System via RGB SCART connected via OSSC. That may be why the colours look off. I'd love to get my hands on an SC3000 one day and well definitely be featuring those systems in future videos - Dan

Great attempt at some pronunciation there pal 😂. Well done, you actually nailed it. Great video, buddy as always. Have to confess. I actually really enjoy Congo Bongo despite all of the haters that say it's a rubbish rip off of Donkey Kong. I mean, they're not wrong. I just really enjoy it.

I have these games on my modded MD mini, I suppose they were good for their time. Be nice if Sega made a novelty mini console of this device.

The famicom was looking next gen compared to the sg1k! The Master System did look next gen compared to the NES. The sega magic to me started with the SMS.
