My latest restoration, a 1973 electromechanical ardcade game. The player races against the clock and other motor cycles. The object is to finish in first place when the race is over.

I realized how innovative this game was. At first glance, I thought the surface was moving, but was just an optical illusion created by the special lighting. I bet this game ate a lot of quarters back in its day!

@ Lemon O, that isn't a conveyor. It is the bottom of the 4 competitors moving around through the table. When the game is off, there is no line on the street because the light that projects it is shut off. The line moving gives the illusion of movement down the road. You can see the moving lighting device above the road at 2:57 - the dashed road line is visible on the spinning clear plastic drum.

I loved this game as a kid in the early 80s. As a kid you couldn't imagine how this worked, now as an adult I got to see the curtain pulled back, how neat is this. I can still remember the ratcheting sound it would make when you bumped another racer. It almost seemed that the other racers would cut you off or run you into the wall while playing, nothing personal I guess it was just the way the gears turned, ha! Thanks for the post.

The bike movement is controlled by a set of two cams that spin and activate several switches that reverse the voltage being applied to the turntable motors that the bikes are mounted on. The cams have a pattern cut into their outside diameter. This pattern activate the switches at different times to give the appearance of random bike movement. No transistors involved. It's all electromechanical.

Hi Mr. destroyed, The sound is recorded, as it is on most 1970s vintage dames, on an 8-track tape tape. The motorcycle engine sounds are on one channel and the trumpet fanfare that you hear if you win the game is on another channel. The games switches some relay contacts when it needs to change from engine to fanfare sounds. Kevin.

No, the movements are controlled by several sets of rotating cams that open and close electrical contacts. The contacts send electricity to different motors which turn large discs under the roadway. The bikes are held to the rotating discs by magnets. A good few of this entire mechanism is shown on my website. Have a good day, Kevin.

@@chantingmammal Yes, Sega couldn't market an electromechanical Sonic The Hedgehog (*) because PETA complained about shoving a magnet into an actual hedgehog. So they had to develop an electronic version. (*) Yes, the "T" in "The" is a capital "T". I guess that was done for the trademarking registration. The "The" is not an English article here, but actually Sonic's middle name! So, according to trademark laws, it's not just some hedgehog whose name happens to be "Sonic", but the whole phrase "Sonic The Hedgehog" is a trademarked name. A better picture of the bike mechanism located, under the roadway, can be seen on my website. The bikes are held onto this mechanism by magnets. The mechanism has three motors on it that are controlled by a randomizing cam assembly which change the motors directions at random intervals. Also, one additional large motor causes the whole mechanism to move forwards or backwards in relation to how much gas you give your bike.
