Wow, this was absolutely fascinating. Being born in 1982 in Germany where arcades were very rare and the time of these vintage electromechanical arcade machines was already over, I only saw one of these machines in a kinda run-down amusement park in the Netherlands once (Sega Moto Champ) a couple of years ago and was instantly fascinated. It´s a bit of a shame that so many people know about Pong and Space Invaders, yet these old machines are so unknown. The night run was stunning :)

I wish they'de still make these styles of mechanical games. they were really fun and the inginuity that went into them was very impressive.

That was wheely good. Shame they don't make games like this anymore.

Very cool. These types of games are a lost art. Im glad to see you restoring them to their former glory.

About 40 years ago I played at a machine similar to this one. It was already an obsolete device. It was a kind of flight simulator. The drum tilted from side to side and there were targets on the drum: fuel depots, dams, bridges... The targets lighted when hit. There was a crude crosshair on a glass as aiming device I only saw that machine one time.

IMO, many of these old games are like works of art. How much of this game is original? More specifically, is most of the paint (especially the blue background) inside the game original? I don't know what it is about the paint from the 1960's-70's, but you just don't see those types of colors anymore. The blues, oranges, greens, yellows, etc, they just seemed to have a different hue/texture. I really love the colors. They're nostalgic. Thanks for preserving these great, vintage games! =D

Agree! - At least I'm trying to do my part to "restore" the past, so the next generation can play and have some idea of what they missed. -KK

I loved this game as a kid. The graphic of the racer was taken from a famous picture of Joel Robert, a World Champion MX racer from the late 60s/early 70s. Do a google image search on "joel robert cz 360 twin" to see the pic.

Seems like a very delicate machine. How could it last in an arcade environment without breaking down constantly?

The drum is fairly lightweight and it spins on a ball bearing axle. So it takes very little force to make it rotate. KK

I remember having a table top home version of this. At least it was somewhat similar. You had a bike that was "stationary" but you moved left or right over a scrolling map (it was flat though, not curved like this, and a smaller scale). Anyone know what that would have been called? I'm thinking it was bought for me in the late 1970's maybe early 1980's

Sounds like a Schaper "Baja Bike Scrambler" to me. Never had one myself, but do remember seeing them advertised on TV in the late '70s.

michigandon Thanks I googled "Schaper Baja Bike Scrambler" and that is very similar to what I had only I think mine was even smaller in scale but yeah it is basically the same idea.
