Midway INVADERS FROM OUTER SPACE electromechanical EM arcade game

This out-of-this-world, vintage arcade game is great fun. The objective is to land illuminated missiles upon as many mechanical targets as possible, within a fixed time (adjustable up to 220 seconds). The scenery is illuminated by a psychedelic black light, creating an eerie green-glow sky, bathed in an explosion of red when targets are successfully struck. The targets consist of 4 aliens and 1 flying saucer. Each of the 4 aliens sporadically rise and descend. When in the descended position, they are hidden and cannot be struck. Likewise, the flying saucer cannot be struck when it is hidden at the far right and far left perimeters. The flying saucer spins continuously and moves horizontally in both directions. The flying saucer changes directions when struck. The player controls a joystick which directs a space-age missile launcher, which pivots on a turret (a 3-dimensional rocket-propelled space bazooka) in the foreground. The number of missiles is unlimited per game. Each alien scores 20 points whereas the flying saucer scores 30 points. The player must land the missile directly upon the target for the score to register. After launching a missile, the player has the ability to guide the missile via the joystick, which is an unusual feature. A burst of light appears when a target is struck. Naturally, appropriate sound effects accompany the action. The sound effects punctuate the descending missile, the screaming aliens (when struck) and add a general foreboding ambiance. The flying saucer target has an explosion sound effect, which was not functioning in the video. One score reel records the player’s score whereas the other tracks the elapsed time. The science-fiction art package has a humorous flavor, especially on the backglass and the targets themselves. Similarly, the cabinet graphics are terrific. This particular game was modified to move the firing button from the thumb position at the end of the joystick to an independent spot on the console for reliability. The missile feature is similar to that utilized in Sega Missile, Midway S.A.M.I. and Midway Sea Raider. Ready to protect earth?

Amazing. I never saw this before. This must have been the inspiration for Space Invaders

Awesome! Love those electro-mechanical arcade games. The engineering inside one of classic games is amazing. Thanks for sharing it with us, Semper Fi!

OH MY! I remember it! This machine was in my city in Poland at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s

The black light installed in this example is correct for this game. Blacklights have different designations, BL and BLB. The latter have a dark blue filter. As I recall, there's a "white" black light tube designation as well. These videos are difficult to capture, as you can imagine. Videotaping through the backglass into a mirror-reflected image of targets, all illuminated by black lighting. I was able to obtain the best view with the ambient lighting off, reflecting how this game was designed to appear, based upon the schematics, from my knowledge of the game and from other enthusiasts/collectors. I do not remember whether the phone produced a light during videotaping. Nevertheless, the overall appearance of the targets and surrounding environment in this video do indeed mimic the spectrum viewed when the ambient light is on. You likely played a game with a BL designated black light, which produces a considerably darker (and less detailed) playing environment.
