I don't understand people's confusion with Beavis and Butthead for Genesis. I rented it as a kid and figured it out, I even figured out how to get the secret ending where you go on stage with Gwar (pretty obvious, just keep walking to the backstage area instead of going inside the venue). It's only hard until you get a decent weapon, that's why you do the mall stage first to get the toy machine gun, then you can plow through everyone.

@@themeangene Being able to play games in Japanese really opens up the Saturn's library, with the added bonus of making collecting actually a reasonable endeavor. I spent a year recently playing almost exclusively Saturn games and there are still a ton on my shelf I haven't touched yet. Constantly amazed by how often I run across second-hand games I'd never even heard of. As someone who grew up outside of Japan, being able to experience everything the Saturn actually had to offer as an adult is like combing through a long-lost piece of SEGA history where they were kind of at the top of their game in their home country (don't forget Saturn outsold the N64 there). Reminds me of the PC Engine as well: another console that had an insane library in Japan and is always part of the conversation when its respective console generation is discussed, but is completely forgotten elsewhere.

@@AilisKnil I always heard the Saturn looks worse than the ps1 when it comes to 3d. Yet my experience is that a lot of Saturn games look incredible. The shining games especially, I was kind of in disbelief how good they look compared to a lot of ps1 joints. Then I booted up resident evil and it is a tiny bit more detailed than the original release on the ps1…idk, it seems like much has been made about the Saturns 3d capabilities not being comparable, but I feel like that’s only isolated to certain cross platform titles. And yes! The imports are insane. Luckily on the ODE you can play translations. Looking forward to digging into Dragon Force…also, the on board save system?! I was very impressed. Still get a memory cartridge, but nevertheless, it is a very cool feature.

3:33 The port is just straight up called a "Game Port", or rarely a "Joystick Port". If your motherboard, or more commonly, sound card had one of these ports, it was a bright mustard yellow connector. It was included on sound cards because you could also use it to plug in MIDI devices.

RPGS had "the most going for them?" A lot of these Snes-Ps2 era JRPGs didn't have amazing gameplay once you get down to it. Linear turned based games that didn't have a whole lot of room for build customization. Best art and music? maybe but I have to respect the games that tried to innovate and perfect gameplay mechanics over that. And I say this as a person who was hugely influenced by JRPGS in elementary-middle school.

I'm surprised you didn't have a more positive reaction to Rocket Knight Adventures. My favorite Genesis platformer. Nice responsiveness to the gameplay and comparatively unique/innovative mechanics for the era, just difficult enough to be a bit frustrating without ever becoming infuriating, and well-crafted Disney-esque graphics with a novel approach to the aesthetic. Different strokes, I guess. Aside from that, Comix Zone had great potential but exactly like was mentioned, was just too damn hard. Another platformer I loved that don't remember hearing you mention was Kid Chameleon, which to me was always a lot of fun but also the sort of game that felt like it could have only existed on Sega for some reason. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a try.

YES! I've been waiting for this video lol. Garfield: Caught In The Ace was my Virtual Bart, although I DID get to play Virtual Bart thanks to my neighbor and... i didn't hate it lmao. Garfield isn't anything to write home about either, but it worked for me. Shinobi 3 and Sonic 3 still remain my biased childhood favs. Hard Drivin' will always be the worst game I owned. I still kind of loathe whoever gifted me that for my birthday. X-men 2 Clone Wars was waaay too hard for me, but god it was so good. I also got to play uh.... that x-men/spider-man game thanks to a friend too but I don't remember if I liked it or not. I'm still disappointed I somehow missed the MMPR movie game, because I would've loved that as a child. I just had the fighting game which I played religiously for a couple of years before I finally tossed it in the closet.
