Sega Dreamcast and NAOMI Hardware Overview - Dreamcast Dreamland

SUPPORT THE CHANNEL : / videogameesoterica
Hello and Welcome to the Dreamcast Dreamland! For the next eighteen weeks Tuesdays on the channel will be dedicated to the Sega Dreamcast, Sega NAOMI and Sega Hikaru.
Since all three platforms share the same base architecture I thought it would be fun to include games from multiple families of Sega hardware in this series.
Up first: a full hardware overview of the Sega Dreamcast and NAOMI, including the hardware they share and their differences. The Dreamcast was a super powerful piece of hardware for 1998 and the NAOMI was even more impressive.
We will have 17 more videos coming up in the series, filled to the brim with some of my favorite Dreamcast, NAOMI and Hikaru games!

The Dreamcast's 8MB of video RAM was absolutely massive at the time. In comparison, the PS2 only had 4MB of VRAM. However, the Dreamcast used very slow 128-bit SDRAM while the PS2 used a crazy 2560-bit bus with embedded DRAM. So while the Dreamcast typically stored better, higher-resolution textures, the PS2 made up for it by having a massive fill-rate advantage. I think Sega's method was probably a lot easier to develop for though considering you could just load the textures directly into VRAM while on the PS2 they were typically stored in system RAM. It's kind of interesting, because from a technical standpoint, the Dreamcast vs PS2 is rather the opposite situation of the Saturn vs PSX, with the Dreamcast being the much simpler design and much easier to develop for. The Dreamcast really shows that Sega learned a lot from the complex Saturn architecture. And Naomi was a hell of a great arcade board!

@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah. I will always consider the Dreamcast as going head-to-head with the PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox, but the reality is that it was probably a little too early and a little too underpowered. PowerVR graphics were a fine choice back then, but I really think the 3dfx solution could have been better, and maybe could have even saved two companies at the same time. I'm not sure the Hitachi SH-4 was the way to go, either, although I'm not sure what "Blackbelt" was supposed to use as a CPU. I think I heard an Intel x86 CPU was being floated as an option, but I'm not sure. My point being, I think Sega had a history of trying to iterate on hardware far too often, as seen with the Sega CD, 32X, Neptune, Pluto, and all the other different hardware combinations they had going in addition to the Saturn itself. The home console market was moving so much slower than the arcade market was back in those days, and Sega seemed like an arcade hardware leader, so perhaps they just didn't recognize that distinction? Additionally, I think Sega was one of the most innovative companies in the early 90's. If you've ever watched any of Jenovi's videos, he has a lot of great ones that talk about a lot of stuff I never knew Sega was delving into, including why the Saturn 3D controller was detachable from its cord (I didn't even realize that until I watched his video). They were ambitious to a fault, and the disagreements between SOJ and SOA didn't help. All of that said, I still think the Dreamcast architecture was great, and the console was ground-breaking in many ways when it was released. I worked in retail in 1999 and 2000 and it was a shame to watch people marvel at the Dreamcast, only to hear them say "I'm just going to wait for the Playstation 2." Hype was that huge. And I don't really blame people for brand loyalty, but the Dreamcast actually sold me on Sega. I was convinced they were doing everything right this time. I went from owning all Nintendo consoles to buying a Dreamcast at launch.

Sega basically was its own worst enemy. They made such strange decisions sometimes that seemed to just spite themselves. They threw a better, more power platform away with Blackbelt just because Sega of Japan didn’t like Sega of America.

In practice, PS2 and Dreamcast had a similar amount of memory to store textures. Only the memory architecture is different - PS2 uses it's RD-RAM as unified RAM and transfers the textures those 16 parallel pixel pipelines currently work on via the GIF-Bus to the eDRAM-Cache, while Dreamcast uses a traditional Main-RAM/VRAM architecture. Depending on the geometrical complexity of the scene, Dreamcast has about 3 to 4 MB VRAM to store textures. If you factor in VQ-texture compresson, that is about 15 to 20 MB. But compression is lossy, so you lose sharpness, colors and details in the process. If you reserve half of the PS2's 32 MB RD-RAM for textures, you will get a similar amount of textures at similar quality.

They needed a form factor that would allow multilanguage manuals, sometimes six or seven different languages. A normal jewel case wouldn't do it. A lot of PAL manuals are beefy but quite devoid of information because of that. Nothing beats the early Saturn PAL games in crappiness tho: two pieces of plastic glued together by a piece of cardboard, they really self-destroy just sitting on a shelf in the wrong way.

There were so many great games released for the Dreamast and its arcade brethren. I have so many great memories of playing with friends as well as some dorm-wide tournaments with Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter 3tb, Street Fighter Alpha 3, SF3: Third Strike and Double Impact, Power Stone 1 & 2, Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Mark of the Wolves, Marvel vs Capcom & MvC2, NBA 2K1, Guantlet Legends, Wacky Races, Dead or Alive 2, etc, etc. Not to mention all the great games on the Naomi/Naomi2/Atomiswave/Hikaru/System-SP that didn't come home to the DC like Ninja Assault, Planet Harriers (loved that one, especially), and tons of others. It's always too hard to narrow down my actual "favorite game system of all time"; however, Dreamcast is definitely in the top 5 with the N64, Genesis, GBA, PS2, and NES. I just had so much fun with the system. Yeah, the Dreamcast's controller was always polarizing among my friends. The cord coming out of the bottom was strange and that cord could have been a couple of feet longer. Sega only went with one analog stick, where two would have been preferable for some games. They regressed to 4 face buttons, while having stuck with 6 with the Saturn 3D controller. And, though I like how things play with it, the Dreamcast d-pad was certainly rough on the thumb due to the sharp edges and hard material. But, even with the issues, I really liked how the Dreamcast controller felt in the hands; the VMUs were a neat idea; having 2 VMU slots per controller was nice; and I liked how the analog stick, triggers, and buttons all felt. Even though I a full complement of 4 official controllers, I ended up buying 4 editional Mad Catz controllers that had a non-blister-inducing d-pad and 6 face buttons to lessen my friends, roommate, and dorm players' complaints (even though I felt the d-pad on those were subpar and so rarely ever used them myself). At least you could use the DC keyboard and mouse with stuff like UT and Quake3 when you didn't need 4-player splitscreen (and one friend and I play massive amounts of Typing of the Dead too). Sadly, I don't think there was anything Sega could have really done that was financially viable for them to compete with the juggernaut that Sony had become in the mainstream game market not to mention the massive hype-train that had built up for the PS2. Even though few early, first-gen PS2 games looked better than many of the more technically impressive DC games-with many early games on PS2 arguably looking worse thanks to the clarity provided by the DC VGA box and the PS2 's 4MB video RAM versus the DC's 8MB and vector quantization texture compression-with many early PS2 titles not having an on-screen polygon budget outside of the DC's capabilities, it was still obvious as developers got familiar with PS2 as well as when X-Box and GameCube arrived, that the Dreamcast would not have been able to keep up when polygon budgets went up an order of magintude (take Grand Prix Challenge on PS2, where just two-three F1 models at the highest LOD would be pushing the entire per-frame polygon budget of the DC at 60fps let alone the rest of the relatively-high-detailed geometry). If Sega had the financial resources to compete, they would have needed to iterate on the Dreamcast within a few short years with a mid-generation console and would always be playing that game of having to compete with earlier technology. It was a tough situation to be in, but at least we got an amazing system with great games out of it even if Sega couldn't hang in the home hardware game very long in the shadow of the PS2.

Soon I’ll have a video with my “idea” on how Sega could have survived in the 90s and competed against Sony. It’s some definite fan nostalgia stuff lol But yeah picking a favorite Dreamcast game is impossible. It’s just filled with some of my favorite games of all time. But I do think had Sega made one choice differently they could have beaten Sony to market with a powerful console that shipped with a DVD player...because the console they could have bought and shipped as Dreamcast is sitting right next to me :) Should be a fun vid when it comes out!

I think it would've been difficult for them compete with Sony and the PS2 after the huge worldwide success the PSX was, had Sega not been in such economical situation the Dreamcast coul've offered more great and unique games that could've competed in it's own way against more powerful consoles. I was just reading forum posts saying it would be possible to get the SP games running on Naomi like they did with AW, but not worth the trouble when so many use proprietary controls. Then a lot of people wondering if the opposite could be done considering it's so close to the naomi in specs

I love the *features* of the Dreamcast controller, like the VMU and the analog triggers, and the analog stick is pretty robust especially compared to the N64 stick, although it doesn't have the nice rubber padding of later controllers. However, I find the Saturn 3D controller to be WAY more comfortable to use. Comparatively, the Dreamcast controller has two major design flaws that really hurt it: 1. The angle of the controller grips, and 2. The seams running along the side of the controller. The Dreamcast controller grips are rather oddly angled inward towards the bottom, exactly opposite of the Playstation controller. (Admittedly, the Playstation controller was my favorite controller when it released, perfected with the Dual Shock) This feels fine at first, but what it does is force you to hold your hands at sort of an awkward angle, with your wrists bent outwards. The Playstation controller, meanwhile, keeps your wrists straight in a much more natural position. The seams that run down the side of the controller are absolutely cavernous. You don't really notice them at first, until you play for a long time, especially a game that leads to a tight grip on the controller, like a racing game. The sharp edges of the plastic start to really dig into your hands and it can be rather painful. Both of these flaws were never apparent to me until I started playing heavy gaming sessions. Try playing a several-hour long race of Test Drive Le Mans, and both flaws make themselves apparent. Couple that with constantly holding the triggers for gas and brakes, and after about 4 hours I felt like was risking permanent claw fingers. And then there's the other problem: it's got two fewer buttons than the Saturn controller. This wouldn't have been such a big deal had games not started to really take advantage of all 8 available buttons around that time, and with the lack of a second set of shoulder buttons, it quickly felt like a mistake to me. I love the Dreamcast a lot. It's definitely one of my top 3 favorite video game consoles ever and the overall quality of the library is pretty much second-to-none. But the controller flaws are still a drag for me to this day. I need to get myself one of the Brawler DC controllers as they look a LOT more comfortable to use. I just can't play it very long using the standard controller.

@@VideoGameEsoterica Part of my problem is that I tend to grip controllers quite tightly. I'm the kind of person that really pounds on a button when something tense happens on screen. So I think I over-grip. Any controller will cause me some discomfort if I play long enough. However, the Dreamcast controller is the one that bothers me the most, and seems to exhibit a few problems that most don't. Other than those things, I really don't mind the controller at all. Holding it casually in my hands, it feels fine and is a nice shape. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Brawler DC feels in comparison. Edit: Other than the PSX controller, I think my absolute favorite classic controller is the SNES. It actually feels better to hold than the PSX controller since it only has two shoulder buttons. I feel like that's also a benefit of the DC controller. I don't like having to use my two middle fingers to hit L2 and R2. I end up using my index fingers for them because it feels more natural.

The dreamcast is like the neo geo but for 3D gaming., it was a console designed to be an arcade system at home, and also that is its main failure., the console is focused on framerates, resolution and anti-aliasing like the arcade games., but the ps2 can push more polygons, have more complex textures and effects, the early ps2 games that came in CD Rom format., those blue cd roms., look like dreamcast games., the ps2 had some flaws against the dreamcast., it has less ram which was a major problem., the ps2 is harder to develop., and got worst video output., sony may have cut those stuff that was used in arcade games to focus just in the stuff necessary for standard CRTs., although the ps2 do have lots of arcade games with anti-aliasing, great framerate and all the good stuff the dreamcast had., not many knew how to program well for the ps2., that is why many think the dreamcast is more powerful but NOPE it is not., the dreamcast games are way more simple; other problems of the dreamcast is that it wasnt well designed., it feels like a rushed console, with its noisy drive, the controller looks nice but is not practical same situation with the vmu
